Tianjin Airlines confirms SYDCHINESE carrier Tianjin Airlines

continues to expand its footprint in Australasia, now opening bookings for its new Tianjin-Zhengzhou-Sydney route.

The airline, which is a division of Virgin Australia part-owner HNA group, applied for permission to launch the Sydney service just over a month ago (TD 29 Sep) and kicked off Melbourne flights to Tianjuin via Chongqing last week.

GDS screens indicate the Tianjin-Sydney flights will commence operation twice weekly from 29 Jan 2018 using Airbus A330-200 aircraft.

Tianjin Airlines also flies from Tianjin to Auckland via Chonqing, last month offering return fares for just US$151 (TD 24 Oct).

In Aug, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission approved a five-year

alliance between Virgin Australia and HNA Group which covers reciprocal codeshares, Special Prorate Agreements and “joint route planning and economic risk sharing agreements”.

VA also recently announced a reciprocal frequent flyer agreement with four HNA carriers including Tianjin Airlines, Hong Kong Airlines, Hainan Airlines and Beijing Capital Airlines.

Tianjin Airlines overnight confirmed it had signed an SPA deal with VA connecting Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Brisbane and the Gold Coast to its flights over Sydney and Melbourne, as well as for onward travel in China to Beijing, Guangzhou, Urumqi, Xi’an and Haikou.

CIT adds Canada & Alaska THE Newsom family is on

the acquisition trail again, with confirmation that long time industry identity Ed Smith has sold Canada & Alaska Specialist Holidays to Newsom’s Europe-focused CIT Holidays.

It’s the end of an era for Smith, who has been involved in the Australian travel industry for more than 40 years and was a pioneer in promoting Canada as a primary destination for Aussie travellers, rather than as an add-on to travel to the USA.

Smith’s career included eight years with Trafalgar before establishing the Canada & Alaska Program at Adventure World - also founded by Peter Newsom prior to its sale to NRMA in 2009.

Smith also worked at Cunard, then set up the North America

division of talPacific Holidays before starting his own Canada & Alaska Specialist Holidays in 2006.

CIT commercial director Kate Newsom said she was thrilled at the acquisition from Smith.

“As niche specialists in holidays to Europe, in particular Italy & Switzerland, we already deal with a similar demographic to that of the Canada & Alaska team.

“We see this as both an expansion of our business and a diversification to what we already do, with Canada and Alaska two of the hottest destinations for Australians travelling overseas,” she said.

Canada & Alaska Specialist Holidays has moved into the CIT Holidays office in George St, Sydney, with its four expert staff “looking forward to assisting agents in all aspects of booking to those destinations”.

Other businesses in the Newsom stable include Perth-based operator Travel Directors.

Cruise role for BorgDAMIAN Borg has been

appointed as national accounts manager for Norwegian Cruise Line, joining the company after a stint with Club Med (TD 16 Mar).

Borg’s extensive industry experience also includes roles with APT, Virgin Australia, the Globus Family of Brands, Travelscene American Express, and The Travel Corporation.

Jetgo WOL debutJETGO Australia last week started

The airline is now operating Embraer ERJ135 aircraft to Brisbane (daily) and Melbourne Essendon (11 times weekly).

Int’l tourism recordINTERNATIONAL tourism

is on track for a record year in 2017, according to new analysis released this week by the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).

In its latest World Tourism Barometer, UNWTO says demand for tourism remained strong over the northern summer peak season, with int’l arrivals in Jul and Aug breaking the 300 million barrier for the first time.

Between Jan and Aug, world destinations welcomed 901 million international tourists arrivals, up 7% on the same period of last year.

PROVERBIALLY, to go to jail is to do some ‘hard time’, but perhaps that perception has been given a shake recently by The Ritz-Carlton Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, with the luxury hotel temporarily being used to house dozens of suspects including princes and businessmen.

Forming part of an anti-corruption sweep, suspects have been corralled into first class suites at the Ritz-Carlton and other high-end hotels while the investigation takes place.

Officials haven’t commented on the prospect of some detainees being sentenced to a long stretch of jacuzzi time.

EK A380 plansAIRBUS is working with

Emirates on a follow-up deal in time for the Dubai Air Show next week, Bloomberg is reporting.

If a new deal is brokered, it would provide much needed relief to the A380 program as orders for double-decker aircraft are running low as carriers favour smaller, more fuel-efficient planes.

Bloomberg reported in Jun that Airbus was working to secure a follow-on order for 20 planes, which would lift Emirates’ total orderbook to more than half of the A380s total.

The Dubai Air Show runs until 16 Nov.

Tuesday 7th November 2017

MELBOURNE Cup day has arrived once again and the Spring Racing Carnival is off and running like never before. Australians and indeed people from all over the world have fallen in love with Spring Racing and the

Emirates Melbourne Cup remains the pinnacle of the week. It has become a fantastic event, no question, for the travel and tourism industry with plenty of people

moving around the country domestically and of course from overseas. The race that stops the nation is set to be a very interesting contest

this year with the usual bucket loads of speculation and anticipation. As TD goes out to the loyal readers, my tips this year may be on the somewhat dodgy side, but nevertheless here is my best shot. I am taking a boxed trifecta this year with Almandin, Marmelo and Red Cardinal. Others that seem to me to have a chance (like I have any idea) are Single Gaze and Wicklow Brave.

As is the case each year the travel industry embraces the spirit of Melbourne Cup with all sorts of hospitality events and opportunities for people from the industry to take part. The week in Melbourne is truly an international festival and each year somehow it just gets better and better. So whatever you are doing today, including those who have a public holiday, I hope that you manage to back a winner, think about something other than the daily grind and enjoy the events of Melbourne Cup and the Spring Racing Carnival.

On a final side note, I have just returned from the World Travel Agents Association Alliance (WTAAA) board meeting held in Valencia Spain, along with the 4th summit of the Presidents of Travel Agents Associations. Having never been to Valencia, I can now say it is a wonderful Spanish city with amazing galleries and art installations of a world-class nature. Highly recommend to anyone thinking Spain.

As to the subject of the WTAAA, our focus was on the pending IATA Passenger Conference which is due to take place on 21 Nov in Geneva, at which it seems changes to the program and implementation of NewGenISS is set to take place. Stay tuned for the detail over the coming weeks.

The program kicked off on 25 October in Cairns where delegates were welcomed at the Cairns Aquarium, taking in an up close view of thousands of marine creatures, ahead of a day of workshops on board the train to Proserpine. “This is a highly anticipated annual event that has a long and successful history of profiling local tourism businesses to the international buyers who help sell their product to the world,” ATEC managing director Peter Shelley

said. “It is a really valuable opportunity for North Queensland tourism businesses to showcase their unique products to buyers who arrange unique travel itineraries for international visitors.”

THE event, sponsored by Tourism & Events Queensland, Qantas, Queensland Rail Travel and Tourism Whitsundays, has been a key feature of the FNQ tourism calendar for 18 years. Qld Tourism and Major Events Minister Kate Jones says the state’s tourism industry was thriving as international and domestic visitor numbers continued to increase and travellers spent more money than ever before. “The ATEC Inbound Up North event offers a fantastic opportunity to further connect inbound tour operators with our tourism industry and share the incredible experiences within key visitor markets around the world,” she said. A jump in oil prices saw the dollar climb 0.6% against the US dollar and the euro.

Increases of 0.2% were recorded against the Swiss franc and the Japanese Yen.

It was not all smooth sailing, as the dollar edged lower against the British pound and the NZ dollar by 0.2%.

While the Melbourne Cup will stop the nation, the markets will look to the Reserve Bank on what it will do with interest rates, a cautious tone could see the AUD/USD be heavily sold.
