Dear Friends:

I am delighted to join the New York Chinese Opera Society in welcoming everyone to its

11th

Cultural Exchange Festival at Pace University’s Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts.

Established in 2006, NYCOS strengthens our city’s status as a global hub of the arts

through its public performances and educational programs that promote Chinese opera and

culture to youth and adults across the five boroughs. This year’s edition of its annual festival will

once again feature performances by artists from China and New York, lectures about Chinese

cultural traditions, and an essay competition for students, plus a special presentation of the

classic production The Story of Su San. As you gather to enjoy a vibrant showcase of music,

song, drama and dance, I applaud the Society’s members and supporters for their efforts to

enhance the diversity of our cultural offerings and share the rich artistic heritage of China with

New Yorkers of all backgrounds.

On behalf of the City of New York, congratulations to the performers being featured this

weekend. Please accept my best wishes for a wonderful festival, and enjoy the show!

Synopsis

Story of Su San

Famous courtesan Su San (Yu Tang Chun) meets Wang

Jinlong, son of the Minister of Rites, and they vow to be

together forever. Wang Jinlong squanders all his money, and

is evicted out of the brothel by the evil Madam. So, he

wanders around and ends up in a temple. A jewelry seller,

Jinge, brings a message for him to Su San, so she goes to

meet him, and gives him money for returning to his

hometown Nanjing. After Wang leaves, Su makes up her

mind of never picking up a guest anymore. The madam then

tricks her into being sold to a Shanxi business tycoon Shen

Yanlin as concubine. Shen’s wife Pi, however, is having an

affair with Zhao Jiansheng. She poisons Shen to death, and

accuses Su as the murderer. The Judge is bribed beforehand,

so he falsely sentences Su to death. The escort Chong

Gongdao guards Su from Hongtong to the capital Taiyuan for

a retrial. On route she pours her injustice to him, and he

sooths her. Upon arrival at the Taiyuan court, the judge

happens to be Wang Jinlong. Wang can’t sustain himself

when seeing her so he is unable to make judgements, and the

juries Pan Bizheng and Liu Bingyi see it through. Wang

secretly enters the prison to meet with Su, and bumps into

Liu Bingyi. Persuaded by Pan Bizheng, Liu finally vindicates

Su San, who at last reunites with Wang Jinlong and they
