New Woody Plant Herbicides
J. Ferrell and B. Sellers, University of Florida
Aminopyralid vs Picloram
Picloram
Aminopyralid(Milestone VM)
• Both pyradine chemistry with one Cl difference• Both have significant soil activity• Aminopyralid is much more active• Both molecules should have brush activity
Aminopyralid on Brush
• Seems to have little impact on brush when applied alone
• But, has been shown to be synergistic with applied with other herbicides.
Aminopyralid
Aminopyralid + 2,4-D
Objective
• Determine if the addition of aminopyralid with standard brush control mixes improves efficacy.
Sweet gum control - broadcast
Glyphosate – 1 gal/A, triclopyr ester – 1 gal/A, imazapyr – 1 pt/A, Milestone VM – 7 oz/A
Persimmon in Pasture
Persimmon control - broadcast
triclopyr ester – 1 qt/A, fluroxypyr – 40 oz (Vista), Milestone VM –7 oz/A

Conclusions
• Aminopyralid doesn’t appear to improve control of the brush species we tested.– Aminopyralid appears to be excellent on
legume trees (mimosa, lead tree (leucena), etc).
• Aminopyralid effectively suppresses stump sprouting for at least 1 year.
Aminocyclopyrachlor (MAT 28) for brush controlA. Ezell and J. YeiserMississippi State and
Steven F. Austin
What is MAT 28?
• New herbicide from DuPont• Auxin mimic like triclopyr and
2,4-D.• Very low volatility• Excellent on broadleaf weeds• Registration – mid to late
2010 – we hope• Will be sold mixed with many
different herbicides
Products with MAT 28
• Plainview – (MAT + Oust + Telar) – bare ground• Whole US
• Streamline (MAT + metsulfuron) – brush and roadsides
• Whole US• Viewpoint (MAT + metsulfuron+ Imazapyr) –
brush control• SE (hardwoods) and SW (salt cedar)
• Perspective – (MAT + Telar) - roadsides• East of MS river
What does it control?
• Persimmon - Excellent• Maple - Excellent• Oaks – variable control, must add
imazapyr or glyphosate• Weak on sweetgum – must add imazapyr
or glyphosate
Waxy Species
• Marginal control of wax myrtle and yaupon. Need to add triclopyr to improve control.
• Excellent on beautyberry.
What about pine?
• Pines– Excellent on small native pines– Soil residual may injure newly set pines. – May be an excellent site-prep herbicide, but
replant interval is currently unknown.
Conclusion
• MAT 28 is excellent on a number of broadleaf weeds.
• MAT 28 will likely improve control of some troublesome species.
• For broad-spectrum brush control, it is hard to beat imazapyr, glyphosate, triclopyr combinations.
