FROM WINTER WONDERLANDS AND ILLUMINATIONS TO A NEW ALADDIN’S CAVE FOR DIAMOND DEVOTEES, THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE IN NEWCASTLE THIS FORTNIGHT

So, for the uninitiated, what is Dacantus? It’s a new place on Grey street where eating and drinking go together with an emphasis on sharing and informality.

Sounds very cosmopolitan – tell me more Its roots are embedded in the eating and drinking traditions of spain where fine dining doesn’t have to mean formal dining.

And what’s this I hear about gin? Nowhere else in town serves G&ts the way we do and we’ve got a gin tasting menu too.also, all drinks are served with a complimentary aperitif.

What about grub – any hidden gems on the menu? Cod and monkfish cheeks, slabs of roasted suckling pig, and for the daring, our mackerel in an orange marinade with chocolate sauce.

Any other exciting things in the pipeline? We will soon be offering a special seven course tapas, or “pintxos” menu.

FACE FUR FREEbIEHang in there Movemberers you’ve reached the halfway stage. But to get you through the back straight here’s a little incentive from the Man in the City. To mark the annual charitable sprouting of whiskers that is Movember, the Eldon Square barber is offering a £30 voucher to the best mouser at the end of the month. It’s also donating £3 from every £12 pot of moustache wax sold to support the fight against prostate cancer.

RINGING THE CHANGESDiamond fanciers get ready to drool at your first sight of ROX – the newest luxury jewellers in town. As well as a glittering array of the type of sparklers favoured by A-list celebs and sports stars, the shop in Monument Mall has designer jewellery and luxury time pieces from brands like Baume & Mercier, Bell & Ross, Ebel, Rado and Raymond Weil. It is also one of the few jewellers in the UK with its own in-store Gucci shop. Wallets beware! www.rox.co.uk

JAPANESE JOINTFancy something a bit different from your next fast food fix? Why not try the new Japanese burger bar Go which has just opened on Gallowgate in Newcastle city centre. It promises an entirely new concept in fast food, with a menu offering authentic and nutritious Japanese burgers, grilled not fried for the good of your waistline. Pick from grilled lamb, chicken teriyaki or Japanese pork belly burgers, all served in a steamed bun with fresh salad and homemade Japanese mayonnaise. Find Go on Facebook for more info.

THE OLDER THE bETTERVintage virgins forget your misconceptions about buying dead people’s smelly old junk. Vintage goods are, in fact, the height of fashion these days and thriftiness is all the rage. So it’s a good thing that Newcastle Vintage Fair makes a return this fortnight. You’ll find rails and rails of the finest vintage clothing and homewares under one roof at the Theatre Royal on 16 November. Alongside vintage stalls, there’ll also be tea rooms, workshops and more. You might even stumble upon some priceless curiosity that’ll make you a mint. www.britaindoesvintage.co.uk

WINDOW OF WONDERMENTDrifting down Northumberland Street over the sound of accordions and denimed guitarists is a certain jingle jangle and a merry little tune. It can only mean one thing: Fenwick’s Christmas window has been revealed once more and the festive countdown can now officially begin. Last year’s window depicted The Reindeer Express, heavily loaded with sweets, toys and teddies. Find out what surprises are in store this year by heading down to Fenwick today. www.fenwick.co.uk

PREPARE TO bE DAzzLEDThe big button that turns on Newcastle’s Christmas lights looks to be in safe hands this year, with goalkeeper Steve Harper given the honours. The former Newcastle United No.1 who now plays for Hull City will be taking care of the switch on at around 6.30pm on Thursday 21 November on Grey Street. There’s sure to be lots of music to get you in the mood too, with Capital Radio also in attendance.

JUST THE TICKET A top tip for Christmas gift givers: watch the disappointment in your loved ones’ faces turn to joy when they realise what they thought was a mere gift voucher is in fact tickets to a world class act in Newcastle. There are loads of big names heading here in 2014 to choose from. Recent announcements at the Metro Radio Arena include Dolly Parton, John Bishop and the Harlem Globetrotters – not all together obviously, although that would be some show.www.metroradioarena.co.uk

HIGH FIVEWe’re delighted to report that NE1 – bringer of late night shopping, beaches, outdoor cinemas, redevelopment and much, much more in the city centre – has been voted in for another five years. The business improvement district behind the Alive after Five initiative which has also helped make Central Station’s massive makeover happen, can now crack on with its big plans for the next five years. In all 78% of the 840 city centre businesses that voted said ‘yes’ to the blue-coated company.

No honestly it is, and this year’s feast of fairy dust, gender crossers and smutty innuendo for the mams and dads, is shaping up to be a real corker. So where are the best rib-tickling, pie-throwing shows in town this festive season? They’re behind you!Sorry no they’re not. They are of course at NE1’s fine theatre establishments, which have pulled out all the stops to entertain you this Christmas. The Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre wheels in Sleeping Beauty between 6 and 30 December to tell the timeless story of love, wickedness and magic – with some belly laughs and music thrown in for good measure. The cast includes Sue Sweeney – of

stand up and Radio Newcastle fame – as Queenie Sweeney alongside actors Maxie Peters, Glen Joseph and Philippa Wilson.Watch out also for North actor Charlie Richmond, currently

appearing in TV ad land as a Pot Noodle guzzling

Geordie who married a footballer. Will the prince break the spell? Will the evil fairy get her comeuppance? Will there be enough

double entendres to fill a puss’s boots?

Undoubtedly yes, yes and yes and it’s sure to be a riot along

the way.Like a genie needs his lamp, every good panto needs top comic talent to sprinkle their sharp wit like stardust on the proceedings.

The Theatre Royal has that in the form of father and son double act Clive Webb and Danny Adams who in their day jobs make up the Cirque du Hilarious. In this their eighth year at the Theatre Royal, they star as Farmer Trot and Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk (running from 26 November to 18 January). They are supported by the North East’s best dressed dame, Chris Hayward, a veteran making his 30th panto appearance, this time as Dame Rita Trot. The “adorable babes” from local dance school, Marron Theatre of Arts, are also making a return to the theatre. Michael Harrison, of Qdos Pantomimes and executive producer of Jack and the Beanstalk, said: “We are thrilled as ever that Clive and Danny, who continue to smash pantomime box office records whenever they perform, will be leading the cast of the Theatre Royal pantomime.“Their high-energy comedy combined with Chris’s kaleidoscopic wardrobe, a superb cast and brand-new 3D special effects mean that no one will dare miss this

production of Jack and the Beanstalk. It will be without a doubt one of the most impressive pantomimes ever staged in Newcastle.”The Theatre Royal is also putting on what it calls a ‘relaxed performance’ of the show, which is specifically designed to welcome people with an autistic spectrum condition, learning disability or sensory and communication disorder. The show on 14 January, will have a less formal, more supportive atmosphere in order to reduce anxiety levels. Northern Stage, meanwhile, will be taking audiences on an adventure deep into the dark woods and through deep snow, in its show devised by award-winning artistic director Lorne Campbell.

She says: “This year I want Christmas at Northern Stage to feel like a mighty adventure that we all go on together - exciting, a bit scary and unpredictable. With music, danger, a lot of fun and a bit of magic we hope audiences will come and join us for a Christmas of joyful mayhem.” Dark Woods, Deep Snow: A Grimm Tale for Christmas, (2 to 28 December) features a cast headed up by Paul Charlton – best known as one third of TV comedy trio The Ginge, the Geordie and the Geek. Joining Paul is Gary Kitching, a regular with North East improv favourites, The Suggestibles. Also on the bill at Northern Stage this winter is a special show for the under 6s. Tallest Tales from the Furthest Forest

Something differentLive Theatre doesn’t do pantomimes, NE1 was told when putting this issue together. But before you start booing, hissing and throwing cola cubes, it does have something up its sleeve to entertain in December, albeit without the slapstick comedy.

Showcasing the concerns of young people today, six new short plays at the theatre called in Between The Lines cover living room war games, sibling rivalry, extreme sports for pensioners and celebrity revenge.

Written by 13 & 14-year-olds from Benfield High School as part of Live Theatre’s Write Stuff writing residency programme, the plays are performed by professional actors and members of Live’s Youth Theatre.

From thriller to comedy, love story to action adventure, this is a night of theatre that is guaranteed to have you rolling in the aisles one minute and on the edge of your seat the next. They run on 13 to 15 December.

LET THE MULLED WINE FLOW

Yes, we know he’s no longer with us, but let’s not allow a minor detail like that get in the way of a good shindig to celebrate the legendary British composer’s music. The national treasure and titan of the opera is the inspiration for a number of centenary events taking place in NE1 this fortnight. The Sage Gateshead has a special screening of Nocturne – a new film exploring Britten’s uneasy relationship with the wider world. The film is preceded by an introduction by director Tony Palmer on 13 November. Then on 19 November, the venue is hosting a Britten-themed evening in its ‘Exploring Music’ series of music talks. The Theatre Royal also invites

you to A Midsummer Night’s Dream - the first of three stunning productions presented by Opera North until 16 November. Oberon, the fairy king and Tytania, his queen, are locked in a conflict which spills over into the human world.

Shakespeare’s witty words and Britten’s mesmerising music come together in this colourful and vibrant production where costumes and music are equally sparkling. www.theatreroyal.co.ukwww.thesagegateshead.org

MY LIFE AS A DAME

CHRIS HAYWARDbOARD-TREADER ExTRAORDINAIRE

When you’re little it seems a bit weird the first time you see a bloke in a dress. But I can still remember my first panto, when I fell in love with the theatre. What’s really special about panto is that it’s the first taste children get of the stage and I think that’s really important. This year at the Theatre Royal is my 30th Christmas as a dame and what a time I’ve had. I’ve seen it all over the years – like the time the fairy godmother caught fire and in my rescue attempt ended up with my shoes melted to the stage floor. It’s hard work too – rehearsing from 9am til 6pm every day for weeks on end – and it takes loads of planning. In fact, we’re already having meetings about next year’s Theatre Royal show (Snow White by the way, I can exclusively reveal). In my day job I run a tailors in Newcastle and people are amazed when I tell them that my dame’s costumes for one show are worth around £10,000. But what amazes me is just how many adults go to shows compared to kids these days. Some crowds are really rowdy and we can’t shut them up, and others are more laid back, but there’s nothing quite like the atmosphere of a good panto. I was a dancer by trade, so I’m no method actor – but I did learn from the best dames around, having worked with Danny La Rue and John Inman [younger readers – imagine a pre-watershed Julian Clery and a less toothy Alan Carr]. So watch out for plenty of innuendos if you’re heading to the Theatre Royal this Christmas. Right, I’m off to hang out my baubles.

Long before footballers became prancing prima donnas another bunch of peacocking stars with high demands could be found at St James’ Park. Back when the ground was far more ramshackle than the gleaming citadel it is today, it was a gig venue with serious pulling power. Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Bruce Springsteen and even ‘The Quo’ all rocked up at Gallowgate in the

1980s and played to a packed out stadium. Since then things have quietened down gig-wise, save for a 1990 Stones gig and more recently an evening under the stars with Rod Stewart. But the days of gas lighter-lifting rock-outs could be coming back to Barrack Road, with the club recently putting in a planning application for two-day concerts in May next year and May 2015. We can only guess which world stars might be heading to NE1, but anticipation is building in the muso crowd. Among them is Rob Byron, who runs longstanding NE1 record shop Steel Wheels and who was at every one of St James’ Park’s 1980s gigs. He wistfully recalls: “The Stones in ‘82 and Bruce in ‘85 were both outstanding gigs. I didn't enjoy Queen as I'm not a fan and only went because it was on and it was one of those ‘everyone else is going’ type of gigs. But for watching bands like The Stones, St James’ was a great venue. At the new gigs, youngsters today can obviously expect better facilities and improved sound quality. But back in the day St James’ was as good a venue as any.”So who might this veteran of the vinyl trade most like to see back on the hallowed turf? “You've got to be governed by reality so it's kind of pointless saying The Smiths or Elvis so of the bands and acts who are likely to tour and play such venues over the next couple of years I'd say U2, The Stones, Kanye West, Jay Z or Madonna.”Any of the above would no doubt go down a storm in NE1.

I’m considered to be a big camp southern

softie but if you mess with me, I can get very unpleasant (at the very least I’d write

you a strongly worded letter). My

show covers an array of topics including my bravery

under pressure which may not be quite the same as John McClane in ‘Die Hard’ or even Dorothy facing down the Wicked Witch in ‘The Wizard of Oz’, but standing up to bullies on the last train home from the centre of town is one of the proudest moments of my life. My show also asks; why do kids ruin your life? Why do we hate politicians? Is the UK falling apart forever? Should we save women and children first on a sinking ship even if camp men are on board? However the most important thing about my show is that it’s funny all the way through and, if you don’t laugh, I’ve warned you about my temper. www.thestand.co.uk

The words 'wildlife' and 'Newcastle' in the same sentence may provoke images of stags, hens and kebab munching contractors stalking the Bigg Market. But cast aside your outdated stereotypes of a party city, for we’re talking about the esteemed and globally renowned Wildlife Photographer of the Year showdown which is coming to NE1 this month. The world’s most prestigious showcase of wildlife photography is at the Centre for Life from November 30 and is not to be missed. Expect poignant images of endangered species, spectacular shots of the wildest places on Earth and privileged insights into the beauty, drama and diversity of nature. Now in its 48th year, the exhibition shines a spotlight on rarely seen wonders

of the natural world, and will feature 100 visually stunning and often thought-provoking images, selected from tens of thousands of international entries. Life’s Ian Simmons says: “From displays of peculiar animal behaviour to stunning landscapes, the images have been selected for their creativity, artistry and technical complexity.” Every year emerging talents compete with established names for a chance to be hailed Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Each of the thousands of annual entries is evaluated individually by an international jury of photography experts, before being awarded a place in the top 100 images of the year.

MY TOP 5Paul CharltoN Is ‘the GeordIe’ from hIt bbC tv sketCh shoW ‘the GINGe, the GeordIe aNd the Geek’. here he shares hIs fIve favourIte thINGs about NeWCastle.

1. It’s predictable I'm afraid, but it has to be St James’ Park. An amazing stadium and even if Newcastle aren’t playing well I love the atmosphere.2. My passions in life, along with football, are stories, so going to one of the theatres in a city that creates so much fantastic work is high on the list. I visit Northern Stage and

Live theatre a lot.3. The Tyneside Cinema's bar/café. It's dinky, cute and lively and they sell lovely sweet stuff as well as beer! What more can a lad want?4. The Stand comedy club. It’s a great supporter of comedians and has some great acts on the bill every week. It’s always good for a laugh.5. The veggie breakfasts in the

Morrison’s café in Benwell. It gives a different snapshot of life with a cheap and lovely breakfast and it's round the corner from where I live at the moment.Paul is starring in two Northern Stage shows next month, Dark Woods Deep Snow and The Ginge, the Geordie and the Geek live on 18 and 19 December.
