But we’ve got plenty of hot stuff on these pages to warm your cockles and keep you smiling.Now that there’s no escaping the sights and sounds of Christmas, it’s only right that we turn our gaze to the festive season in this issue. And as you’ll see, there are loads of family favourites returning to Newcastle to help you brave the advances of old Jack Frost and get out and have fun. Meanwhile, if you want to avoid last year’s frantic dash to the garage for your loved ones’ pressies, winter markets may be just the job to keep you out of that dog house. the way.Like a genie needs his lamp, every good panto needs top comic talent to sprinkle their sharp wit like stardust on the proceedings.

The Theatre Royal has that in the form of father and son double act Clive Webb and Danny Adams who in their day jobs make up the Cirque du Hilarious.In this their eighth year at the Theatre Royal, they star as Farmer Trot and Jack in Jack and the Beanstalk (running from 26 November to 18 January). They are supported by the North East’s best dressed dame, Chris Hayward, a veteran making his 30th panto appearance, this time as Dame Rita Trot. The “adorable babes” from local dance school, Marron Theatre of Arts, are also making a return to the theatre. Michael Harrison, of Qdos Pantomimes and executive producer of Jack and the Beanstalk, said: “We are thrilled as ever that Clive and Danny, who continue to smash pantomime box office records whenever they perform, will be leading the cast of the Theatre Royal pantomime.“Their high-energy comedy combined with Chris’s kaleidoscopic wardrobe, a superb cast and brand-new 3D special effects mean that no one will dare miss this

production of Jack and the Beanstalk. It will be without a doubt one of the most impressive pantomimes ever staged in Newcastle.”The Theatre Royal is also putting on what it calls a ‘relaxed performance’ of the show, which is specifically designed to welcome people with an autistic spectrum condition, learning disability or sensory and communication disorder.The show on 14 January, will have a less formal, more supportive atmosphere in order to reduce anxiety levels. Northern Stage, meanwhile, will be taking audiences on an adventure deep into the dark woods and through deep snow, in its show devised by award-winning artistic director Lorne Campbell.

She says: “This year I want Christmas at Northern Stage to feel like a mighty adventure that we all go on together - exciting, a bit scary and unpredictable. With music, danger, a lot of fun and a bit of magic we hope audiences will come and join us for a Christmas of joyful mayhem.” Dark Woods, Deep Snow: A Grimm Tale for Christmas, (2 to 28 December) features a cast headed up by Paul Charlton – best known as one third of TV comedy trio The Ginge, the Geordie and the Geek. Joining Paul is Gary Kitching, a regular with North East improv favourites, The Suggestibles. Also on the bill at Northern Stage this winter is a special show for the under 6s. Something differentLive Theatre doesn’t do pantomimes, NE1 was told when putting this issue together. But before you start booing, hissing and throwing cola cubes, it does have something up its sleeve to entertain in December, albeit without the slapstick comedy.

Showcasing the concerns of young people today, six new short plays at the theatre called in Between The Lines cover living room war games, sibling rivalry, extreme sports for pensioners and celebrity revenge.

Written by 13 & 14-year-olds from Benfield High School as part of Live Theatre’s Write Stuff writing residency programme, the plays are performed by professional actors and members of Live’s Youth Theatre.

From thriller to comedy, love story to action adventure, this is a night of theatre that is guaranteed to have you rolling in the aisles one minute and on the edge of your seat the next. They run on 13 to 15 December.

MY LIFE AS A DAME

When you’re little it seems a bit weird the first time you see a bloke in a dress. But I can still remember my first panto, when I fell in love with the theatre. What’s really special about panto is that it’s the first taste children get of the stage and I think that’s really important. This year at the Theatre Royal is my 30th Christmas as a dame and what a time I’ve had. I’ve seen it all over the years – like the time the fairy godmother caught fire and in my rescue attempt ended up with my shoes melted to the stage floor. It’s hard work too – rehearsing from 9am til 6pm every day for weeks on end – and it takes loads of planning. In fact, we’re already having meetings about next year’s Theatre Royal show (Snow White by the way, I can exclusively reveal). In my day job I run a tailors in Newcastle and people are amazed when I tell them that my dame’s costumes for one show are worth around £10,000. But what amazes me is just how many adults go to shows compared to kids these days. Some crowds are really rowdy and we can’t shut them up, and others are more laid back, but there’s nothing quite like the atmosphere of a good panto. I was a dancer by trade, so I’m no method actor – but I did learn from the best dames around, having worked with Danny La Rue and John Inman [younger readers – imagine a pre-watershed Julian Clery and a less toothy Alan Carr]. So watch out for plenty of innuendos if you’re heading to the Theatre Royal this Christmas. Right, I’m off to hang out my baubles.

Long before footballers became prancing prima donnas another bunch of peacocking stars with high demands could be found at St James’ Park. Back when the ground was far more ramshackle than the gleaming citadel it is today, it was a gig venue with serious pulling power. Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Queen, Bruce Springsteen and even ‘The Quo’ all rocked up at Gallowgate in the

1980s and played to a packed out stadium. Since then things have quietened down gig-wise, save for a 1990 Stones gig and more recently an evening under the stars with Rod Stewart. But the days of gas lighter-lifting rock-outs could be coming back to Barrack Road, with the club recently putting in a planning application for two-day concerts in May next year and May 2015. We can only guess which world stars might be heading to NE1, but anticipation is building in the muso crowd. Among them is Rob Byron, who runs longstanding NE1 record shop Steel Wheels and who was at every one of St James’ Park’s 1980s gigs. He wistfully recalls: “The Stones in ‘82 and Bruce in ‘85 were both outstanding gigs. I didn't enjoy Queen as I'm not a fan and only went because it was on and it was one of those ‘everyone else is going’ type of gigs. But for watching bands like The Stones, St James’ was a great venue. At the new gigs, youngsters today can obviously expect better facilities and improved sound quality. But back in the day St James’ was as good a venue as any.”So who might this veteran of the vinyl trade most like to see back on the hallowed turf? “You've got to be governed by reality so it's kind of pointless saying The Smiths or Elvis so of the bands and acts who are likely to tour and play such venues over the next couple of years I'd say U2, The Stones, Kanye West, Jay Z or Madonna.”Any of the above would no doubt go down a storm in NE1.

Nicholas received the Charles Heywood Scholarship to study at the Royal Northern College of Music, where he obtained a Masters with distinction in Performance and was awarded the Clifton Helliwell Memorial Prize for Piano.
