A New Vision for Agriculture
Deepening public-private collaboration to accelerate growth in sustainable agriculture
The Issue
Over the past three years, food security and economiccrises have highlighted both the urgent need and thepotential for developing sustainable agriculturalsystems. Nearly one billion people -- one out of six
globally -- lack access to adequate food and nutrition.By 2050, the global population will surpass 9 billionpeople, and demand for agricultural products isexpected to double. At the same time, the world’sagricultural systems will be increasingly challenged bywater scarcity, climate change and volatility, raising therisk of production shortfalls. Substantial gains inagricultural productivity can be realized throughinvestment, innovation, policy and other improvements. However realizing these gains will require anexceptional level of collaboration among stakeholdersin the agricultural value chain including governments, companies, multi-lateral and civil-society organizations,
farmers, consumers and entrepreneurs. Stakeholderalignment around shared priorities and large-scaleinitiatives is therefore key to success.
A New Vision for Agriculture
The New Vision for Agriculture initiative, led by theConsumer Industries Community of the WorldEconomic Forum, works to develop a shared agendafor action and foster multi-stakeholder collaboration toachieve sustainable agricultural growth through market-based solutions.
The initiative has defined a vision that highlightsagriculture’s potential as a positive driver of foodsecurity, environmental sustainability and economicopportunity worldwide. The group believes thatachieving this vision will require the leadership andcapacity of all stakeholders – government, business, civil society, academia, farmers and consumers.
Project activity is anchored around expert analysis andleadership level dialogues at both global and regionallevels. These dialogues have catalyzed two majorcountry-level partnerships to date, in Tanzania andVietnam, with more under development.

The project is led by 20 global partner companies of the
World Economic Forum who provide strategicleadership and championship of the initiative.
