About the instructor: George Lacefield - Mueller Training Manager. George served over 23 years inthe US Navy as a Water Tender, Boiler Technician, and Gas Turbine Technician as well as a Basic Training Instructorand a Trainer of Basic Training Instructors. While in the US Navy, he gained knowledge conducting repairs and preven-tive maintenance and conducted operation and maintenance classes on valves, fittings, pumps, distilling plants, reverseosmosis units, boilers, gas turbine engines and all associated equipment as well as earning his certification as a MasterTraining Specialist. In addition to being a Master Training Specialist, he was responsible for all class “C” Naval engineer-ing schools and courses, which included training over 3000 students and certification of over 200 instructors and certifi-cation of 33 Master Training Specialists. Following His Naval service, George worked as a Field Service Engineer, pro-viding consulting and trouble shooting on various water systems at numerous power plants throughout the country.George began his career with Mueller in May of 2010 as a product instructor and Assistant Training Manager and was

promoted to Training Manager in March 2012. George holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Engineering.

MRWA “Hands-On” Wastewater Treatment Plant OperationLaboratory Analysis Training Session

This is a “hands-on” course on operating a wastewater treatment plant. Class size will be limited to 21Operations Specialists. (Tentative based on full attendance)

7:30am Registration and Introductions

Review Training Plans for the DayThis session will cover operating the Central Iron RangeSanitary Sewer District Wastewater Treatment Facility.Following a tour of the plant, the attendees will break intogroups of three.

Review Treatment Plant Design and OperationEach group will rotate between three separate stations. Each station will require its group to gather informationand perform process control calculations on each part of the process train from the influent of three cities: removalof primary, secondary with anoxic zone, digestion, solidshandling, and disinfection.

12:00pm Lunch - (On Your Own)

1:00pm Description of Three StationsStation 1 includes: As-built readings, flows, inorganics, primary process calculations, and understanding systemmaintenance. Station 2 includes: biological process,secondary, biosolids handling, disinfection, maintenance,and chemical feed rates. Station 3 includes: laboratory testing procedures, microscopic analysis, TSS, phosphorus,ammonia, pH, and settleability on the entire process.

Reviewing the Parameters The group will discuss their calculations and comparisons at the end of the day.

Major Wipes Breakthrough - Groups Agree to Collaborateon Improved Flushability GuidelinesAccording to a WEF press release the first meeting of a Product Stewardship Initiative occurred onMarch 26th in Washington, DC. The topics on their agenda included improving product labeling andincreasing public awareness about what is and what is not flushable. This meeting between waste-water representatives and marketing leaders in the nonwoven fabrics industry will hopefully inducestricter regulations and fewer wipes problems within the wastewater treatment process. The groupsplan to meet several more times this year and roll out initiatives in 2015 and 2016.

“Some nonwoven wipes products are not designed to be flushed but get inappropriately flushed

anyway, so INDA is working together with NACWA, APWA, WEF and CWWA to develop improved

flushability guidelines…,” said INDA President Dave Rousse.
