1. Date and Place of Writing:

A. Viewed in light of Acts, it was written from Corinth on Paul’s _____________________________ missionary journey.

B. Paul had not yet visited Rome, so it was before his arrest and

subsequent trip to Rome (Romans 15:22-23).

C. It is written before he goes to __________________________ but with imminent plans to go with the offering he has collected (Romans 15:25, 26).

D. Paul is in the home of _________________________, who seems to

be the same one mentioned in 1 Corinthians 1:14, who lived in Corinth (Romans 16:23).

6

E. He mentions that he has preached the Gospel from Jerusalem all the

way to Illyricum, a statement he could not have made until toward the end of his third missionary journey.

F. All this points to the time of Paul’s stay at Corinth for three months on

his third missionary journey (Acts 20:2-3). This would date the letter in the early months of February in A.D. _____________.

2. Theme: for Sinners 3. Key Verses: Romans 1:16,17 4. The City of Rome A. Rome was the in

Paul's day. It was no accident or coincidence that Paul wrote his masterpiece epistle to the world's largest, most influential city. The population of Rome was ___________________ million.

B. Paul knew since "roads ," all roads led

from Rome, and that the city itself was one of the best vehicles for the propagation of the Gospel.

C. The polytheism of the heathen religions had fallen into contempt by all

classes of people. This left Rome for the Gospel. 5. Occasion of the letter

A. To enlist their _____________________________________________ in his missionary plans (Romans 15:24).

B. To ground them in the ___________________________________ of the Gospel in the midst of those who would pervert it (Romans 1:16; Romans 16:17-19).

C. To warn them of ________________________________ of the Gospel

which were creating problems in the church (Romans 16:17-19). D. To request their ______________________ support, (Romans 15:30-33).

7

Paul had greatly desired to visit Rome, but was providentially (Rom. 1:13). He asks the Roman believers to pray for his journey to them, that it might be "with joy by the will of God." (Rom. 15:32) The practical lesson here is God does not always answer our prayers as we plan, for Paul made it to Rome as a prisoner, shackled, from snakebite, and from shipwreck!

6. The ORIGIN of the Church at Rome

A. It is impossible to determine when the Church at Rome officially began, but

we can say this: it had existed for a number of years when Paul wrote his letter to them (Romans 15:23). There are evidences that the church was _______________________________________________.

1.) The church had sufficient strength to help Paul in fulfilling his plans for a ________________________________ into Spain (Romans 15:24). 2.) He is confident that they were also filled with goodness, knowledge, and were able to admonish one another (Romans 15:14). 3.) That said, it is also apparent that an apostle had never yet visited the church of Rome, since Paul sought to impart some spiritual gift to them with the result being their establishment (Romans 1:11).

B. Who founded the Church at Rome?

1.) The Roman Catholic view has been that the church was founded by Peter. They claim he went to Rome after his escape from prison under Herod Agrippa in Acts 12.

a.) Historical and Biblical evidence does not support this. Peter was still in __________________________ during the Jerusalem conference, Acts 15. b.) If Peter was in Rome while Paul wrote, Paul could not have failed to _____________________________ in Romans 16. c.) The only New Testament evidence of Peter being in Rome is based on the assumption that “________________________” really means Rome (1 Peter 5:13). This is doubtful. It is more probable that Peter preached in Iraq than in Rome!

8

d.) Paul indicates that no apostle had yet been to Rome by saying that they were not yet “_____________________________.” (Romans 1:11) f.) If Peter founded the church of Rome, Paul’s visit to them would have violated his principle not to build upon another man’s ___________________________________ (Romans 15:20).

2.) Another view proposes that Roman Jews converted at Pentecost returned to Rome and started the church. This is unlikely because there is no evidence that any of the pilgrims who became saved at Pentecost went back to their home areas and established churches. 3.) The most likely view is that the church was begun by several small groups or families of Christians from churches established by Paul. Many Christians from the eastern part of the empire would naturally migrate to Rome and bring the Gospel there when they did. Among them were __________________ and _____________________.

7. Membership of the Church at Rome

• The contents of the letter make clear that the membership of the church was composed of both ________________________ and _______________________ Christians. It was a culturally and ethnically diverse church.

A. Jewish elements: Romans 2:28,29; Romans 4:1; Romans 9:10.

B. Gentile elements: Romans 1:13; Romans 11:13.

C. Verses that encourage unity in spite of differences, Romans 14:2-5.

Each being was called an emanation or Aeon, on a descending scale of holiness until one was created who could create the world of evil matter. Jesus Christ was one of the Aeons to Gnostics, and not the Supreme God over all.

In each chapter, Paul relates Christ's coming to his discussion: (1:10; 2:19; 3:13; 4:13-17; 5:23). 1. Date and Place of Writing: 2 Thessalonians was also written from Corinth during his second missionary journey only a few months after his first letter, around A.D. 52.

2. Theme: Christ Has Not Yet Come. False teachers were leading the Thessalonians into a serious misunderstanding about the coming of Jesus Christ. Paul writes to tell them that ____________________________ . Some Thessalonians thought they were living in the tribulation time.

3. Key Verse: 2:1,2 Outline of 2 Thessalonians 1. Strengthening the , The Lord of Glory Chapter 1 2. Comforting the Confused, The Man of Sin Chapter 2

This chapter fits well into the framework of a pre-tribulational rapture:

2 Thess. 2:1: Our gathering together to Him: refers to the ______________________.

2 Thess. 2:2: The day of Christ: refers to the Tribulation, His glorious appearing in judgment, and the Millennium

A. Paul tells us that two things will take place before the Glorious Return

of Christ:

1) There will come a ____________________________ (apostasia) that is an apostasy among professing believers. It speaks of “a deliberate abandonment of a formerly professed position or view, a defection, a rejection of a former allegiance” (Hiebert, p.331). See 1 Tim.4:1-3 and 2 Tim.3:1.

2) The _______________________________ or the son of perdition

will be revealed. The Antichrist must be revealed before Christ returns in glory.

B. The Restraining Influence of the __________________________ will

be removed before the Anti-Christ is revealed, v.6,7.

The restrainer is a person who today is “in the midst” but will one day be taken out of the midst. Many believe this restraining power is the Holy Spirit. The phrase in verse 6, “that HE might be revealed in his time” refers back to the man of sin, that Wicked one who will be revealed (v.3,8). This strongly emphasizes that the rapture must take place before the Man of Sin will be revealed. C. What will Jesus do when He returns? (v.8-12) This is the coming of Jesus that Paul described also in 2 Thess.1:9.

1) He will judge the ______________________, v.8,9.

2) He will judge the ______________________, v.10-12
