Journey to the center of OSU

Moving away from home can be scary. But the move is just the first step toward a huge adventure that will make some of the best memories of your life. Knowing a few hot spots and tips will help to make the transition easier. The Strip is right across

the road from campus on Washington Street. Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, Jimmy John’s, and J.R. Murphy’s are three highlights of this always-busy street.

Great meals off campus in-clude Hideaway Pizza, 230 S. Knoblock St., a Stillwater classic with great pizza and better service; Eskimo Joe’s, the city’s top tourist des-tination at Elm and Duck (you know to try the cheese fries, right?); or Thai Cafe, an exotic treat that’s tucked away at 502 S. Husband St. If you’re looking for a

nicer evening out, Brook-lyn’s, the Ranchers Club or Freddie Paul’s are the per-fect places to dine. Brook-lyn’s, 701 S. Main St., offers contemporary comfort food, the perfect date meal.

Carmike 10 shows the lat-est movies, while Frontier Lanes has open bowling. Nature lovers will also enjoy the Botanic Garden, a peaceful oasis located just west of campus. There are a multitude of

churches in many denomi-nations -- check online for your church of choice. Stillwater offers other

religions as well. A mosque is located near campus at 616 N. Washington St. for Muslim Stillwater residents and students.

For a dressier family atmo-sphere, Freddie Paul’s, 1707 E. Sixth Ave., offers steaks, ribs and seafood. The Ranchers Club, located in the bottom of the Atheron Hotel in the Student Union, is the hottest on-campus spot for a hand-cut steak. Not only can you enjoy the finest cuts of streak, you can pair it with a bottle of wine. Students will be happy to know that you can charge this date to your bursar’s account.Stillwater offers a host of

Campus is packed with activities and clubs including the Student Government Association, Greek Life and more than 450 student organizations. SGA is the governing

body for students at OSU, and offers many chances for students to get involved with committees and enti-ties under the SGA umbrella. SGA serves at the student voice on campus.Another great way to

get involved is through one of the many Greek organizations on campus. Fraternities and sororities offer immediate friends and a family away from

home. Greek life hosts an array of activities including Coke dates, formals and philan-thropic opportunities. Greek houses host recruitment before the school starts, so watch your okstate email for more information. Greek life also plays

a huge part in OSU’s nationally renowned homecoming. For weeks before the big game, campus buzzes with one word: pomp-ing. Hundreds of hours are spent pushing tiny squares of tissue paper into chicken wire to create massive house decs and floats for the day of the game. The night before the

game, Greek Row lights up with mov-

ing images made by these tiny squares for Walkaround, an an-nual event that draws thousands of alums back to town. This is an absolute must-see in the fall, as every house does its best to outdo the other with the biggest, newest and most innovative design. Although home-

coming is one of the biggest days of the football season, each football game comes with a slew of tradi-tions. Two hours before the game, the Cowboy Marching Band, head football coach Mike Gundy and his team take The Walk down Hester Street as cheering fans

spur them toward Boone Pickens Sta-dium. Once at the game, the

Paddle People’s boom is hard to miss. This team of highly devoted fans beat wooden paddles against the sta-dium to cheer on the Cowboys. When the Cowboys score, Bullet, a jet-black horse riden by the Spirit Rider,

wields an OSU flag across the turf. After the game, the

OSU family comes together arm in arm to join in the school’s alma mater. If you can’t make it to

HOT FUZZ: OSUPD strives for safetyWhile college is scary for

students, it’s not a walk in the park for parents, either. While there is crime on campus, it is almost entirely non-violent. According to police, the

biggest threat on campus is larceny. And parents will rest easy knowing that OSU is consistently ranked among the safest schools in the Big 12. Police recommend that

you lock your belongings and don’t leave anything sitting out where someone could walk away with your valuables. The Oklahoma State

CWID (campus-wise ID) is your key for the exterior doors.Students can also register

their phones to receive texts and calls for updates on emergency situations, from weather to campus crises.

University Police Depart-ment has 33 sworn officers to keep campus safe. These officers are available 24/7, 365 days a year. For students who are

walking around campus late at night, OSU offers the Safe Walk program, where a public service officer will walk students wherever they need to go from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m. Students can request an officer by calling 405-744-6523.Parents may also appreci-

ate that dorms are avail-able only to those who live there, protected by a swipe system. Students need to have

An investment in your education isn’t cheap. Here is a breakdown of what you will spend on tuition, fees, and room and board at OSU. Block tuition covers stu-dents who take 12-18 hours worth of classes. The rate is $3,720.75 per semester for in-state students and $10,013.25 for out-of-state students. This cost does not include room and board or fees. The cheapest living op-tions for students living on campus are the communi-ty-style living units includ-ing Parker, Wentz, Stout and Iba. These dorms come with a living space and a community bathroom for only $413 a month. From there, the prices go up as the buildings of-fer more privacy and are newer. The newest dorms on campus, University Commons, will run $655 per month for a shared room. The most expensive, and private, option is the large bedroom in Bennett. This one-bed, one-bath apartment will run you $759 a month. For more information on dorms check out reslife.okstate.edu. Students who want to explore the option of living off campus their first year can check out the clas-

sifieds in the O’Colly for rentals or check Craigslist for a roomie. Once you figure out where to stay, the next hurdle is the meal plan. All incoming freshmen must have a meal plan their first year on campus. Freshmen must buy at least a bronze-level plan for $1,225. This meal plan can be used at any of the 30 dining options on campus. For anyone who feels they need more, other plans include silver for $1,475, gold for $1,750 and platinum for $2,050. Just remember when selecting your plan you can always add money, but once your money is on your meal plan it cannot be taken out. Any money that does not roll over will go to the univer-sity. Finally, there are fees to consider. See the table for more details. These mandatory fees total $93.30 per credit hour. For a 15-hour schedule, that comes out to $1,399.50 per semester. Freshmen and transfer students also incur the New Student Orientation and Enrollment fee ($75) and the Health Risk Assessment fee ($20). Each college also tacks on its own fees. New experiences, new surroundings and new people; college life is stress-ful. Luckily, Oklahoma State University provides resources to help. University Counseling

Services are located on the third floor of the Student Union. Students can seek help from anything from stressing about grades to substance abuse. The first four sessions are free for students. After four ses-sions, the price is $10 per session. Preparation is another

great way to avoid stress. In the middle of campus is the student’s best resource for studying: the Edmon Low Library. Open 24 hours most days during the regular semester, the library offers students a quiet place to study, such as the fourth floor, or rooms for group study, located next to Café Libro, the dining option in

the library. Also located in the li-

brary is the Math Learning Success Center, MLSC. This center, located on the fifth floor of the library, offers tutoring to students in any math course. If you are looking

for somewhere more quiet, there are a few places around campus to check out. The Human Sciences Building hosts a cozy little café that makes the perfect place to study. The Student Union also has a few more quiet spots. The bottom floor is full of comfortable chairs and is usually less busy than the rest of the building. Computers are also available on the fourth floor. For those who need

help writing, the Writing Center is located on the fourth floor of the Student Union and is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 10:30 a.m. to

5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The center is staffed with experienced writers who help make any paper better. Even the most prepared

people get stressed. Pete’s Posse and the Reboot Cen-ter are two great resources. Pete’s Posse is composed of playful, loving dogs that love to be petted, identified by their orange harness. The Reboot Center,

located on the third floor of the Student Union, pro-vides a relaxing atmosphere for students to work on handling stress. Students play games while the com-puter monitors stress levels. To advance in the game, a student must relax.

Oklahoma State University has a long history rich with traditions, many of which are forged from athletics. Before you attend your first game, it’s helpful to under-stand our school’s history. We weren’t always Cow-boys and Cowgirls. When OSU opened its doors in 1890 as Oklahoma Agricul-tural and Mechanical Col-lege (OAMC or Oklahoma A&M), we were officially the Tigers. But students at

the time didn’t like the name and quickly began to call the student body the “Aggies.” In 1923, the Aggies found Pistol Pete, their new mascot, after a long search to replace the tiger. Their inspiration was Frank Eaton, was a U.S. marshal from Perkins. Legend has it that six men killed Eaton’s father in cold blood, and he eventually hunted them all down to avenge the murder. Eaton was a frontiersman through and through, even once shooting his gun and

leaving a bullet hole in the Student Union -- at least, according to the stories. In 1924, the media shook things up. Charles Sauls-berry, editor of the Okla-homa City Times, began to call to the sports teams the Oklahoma A&M Cowboys. The name stuck. On May 15, 1957, Gov-ernor Raymond Gary of-ficially changed the name of the university to Oklahoma State University of Agricul-ture and Applied Science. Even with all the changes

to OSU, some traditions have been around since almost the beginning. “The Waving Song” first picked up steam back in 1908. Now, after every score, OSU fans sing along and wave one arm back and forth above their heads to replicate the motion of the waving wheat of the Great Plains. After games, everyone in the stands is encouraged to remain stand together, arm in arm, and sway to the hymn, singing along with the alma mater.

Nightmare on Elm Street

College life is not as it seems. Confusion lurks within the shadows. Take these tips to avoid being the next victim of the Night-mare on Elm Street. First and most important-

ly, give yourself time. The day you move in, the head-ache begins in the dorm parking lots. Within the first few days of being on campus, all students must purchase a parking sticker and print off a temporary one until that sticker can arrive in the dorm mail. Watch where you park.

The OSU parking police patrols the lots to look for anyone parked incorrectly. Students must park in their designated Residence Hall (RH) parking from 5 a.m.-5 p.m. Outside of those hours staff parking opens up to students, but all 30-minute loading zones, handicap and reserved parking is enforced 24/7. The residence hall parking

lots are oversold according to OSU Parking. Meaning you are not guaranteed a parking spot, and you are not likely to get a spot close to the dorms. This is why you need ample time to drive circles around the parking lots in order to find a spot. The best time to move your car is from around 3:30-6 p.m., when many students have to give up their parking spots. Stay informed. The

O’Colly prints every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and is packed full of

eat in the Student Union at lunch. Many lines can take some time to get through during the peak lunchtime hours. Chic Fil A is one of the worst culprits with a line running more than 20 people long almost every-day at lunch. Many places in the Union

are only open for a few hours each day, so when they are open the Student Union is full of chaos as people decide whether or not to wait in line for their favorite food. For more information on

bump in the night in the dorms. But, don’t worry. It’s probably just a resident on another floor on a differ-ent schedule. People are always moving around in the dorms and it’s never re-ally quiet. But, just turn on some music or the TV and you can drown it all out. Other than a TV or way to

play music be sure to bring shower shoes and a shower bag. Everything you need to shower has to be moved every time you shower so a bag comes in really handy. You will also need eating

utensils. They wont just magically appear after you microwave your mac and

cheese. Storage is another must.

Yes, the dorms do have a lot of storage options. However, most of these op-tions are too high for most people to reach on a daily basi. Flat storage containers will fit nicely under your bed and add easily acces-sible room. Everything is a little less

scarier with family and friends. So whether your combating the Union at lunch or flying through the parking lot to find a spot, when you get back to your dorm, have things that remind you of home. Bring pictures, quotes, or what ever else you find comfort-ing. And, of course, call your mother!

Dear Freshmen: Here’s my advice


Do what scares you. This is my motto and what has led to one of the most amazing, and busy, experi-ences of my life. While this guide is

designed to help you find your way around OSU and Stillwater, you still need to navigate your life. I just recently finished my

freshman year and I have some advice for you. Most importantly: You are

you. That amazing, beauti-ful person is all you will ever need to be. Don’t bend to peer pressure or pressure from those who care about you. College costs too

much money and takes too much time for you to waste it doing something you’re not passionate about. If you haven’t found your

passion, that’s OK. Chang-ing your major is not the end of the world. Sometimes you have to

figure out what you don’t like before you can find what you love. Other times, you just find you like some-thing else more than the current path you’re on.The world is about to open

up. You’ll discover there are degree paths you didn’t even know existed. Don’t be afraid to explore. Your adviser is amazing and will do his or her best to make

every credit you take count for something.Because eventually, you

will find something you are passionate about, and when you do, don’t hold anything back. As a sociology/ strategic

communications major with hopes to work in the non-profit industry, I know first-hand the struggle between wanting to get a degree that will make me money and getting a degree that I love. I’m choosing my career

path based on what will make me happy, not what others want or what will fill my wallet. Just remember, you wake

up every morning to go to a job. Why would you want to go to one that feels like work? And while everyone seems

to look at the end game, it’s going to take a long time to get there. Enjoy every moment. Even finals can be fun

with the right people. Be open to new experiences. Check out a few student clubs. You’ll find friends with similar experiences. Be kind to everyone you

meet. This isn’t just advice for college. You never know what someone is going through or when you might see them again. Finally, everyone is busy.

If you’re working two jobs, some one else is working three. If you’re in a super long lab struggling, some one else is, too, with a kid at home to care for. These are real-life examples of

people I have had the plea-sure to meet. Strangely, the people who

do more usually complain less. Good luck in college. Do

what scares you!
