Southdown High School
Southdown High School was located in Houma, Louisiana. It opened in 1946 as
Houma Colored High School. In 1949 it became Southtown High School A new
school was built for colored, but wasn't ready as scheduled, so the first
graduating class of five (5) held its graduation at Southtown High School in
1953. Prior to the opening of the new Southdown High School, colored students
would travel to Thibodaux or Morgan City to finish high school. In1952 grades
6-12 were added and the first class graduated in 1953.
The new school, Southdown High School was finally ready and opened for
the 1953 school session. The land was purchased from the Southdown Sugar
Corporation, thus the name Southdown. The Southdown Eagles colors were
burgundy and grey. It closed in 1969 and became Southdown Elementary
School.
