A Note from Rev. Mason

Lightening Up With God's Help!
A minister pleasantly surprised his congregation by delivering a
10-minute sermon instead of the usual 30-minute message.
In concluding he explained, "I regret to inform you, brethren, that my
dog, who appears to be inordinately fond of paper, this morning ate
that portion of the sermon which I have not delivered. Let us pray."
After the services a stranger from another church approached the
pastor and said, "Preacher, please let me know if that dog of yours has
any pups. If it does, I want to buy one for my minister."
There was a time before I entered the ministry that I might have
been the one trying to purchase that unborn pup for my minister.
God's message, presented through the thoughts of a concerned pas-
tor, might at some point seemed a little dry; especially when it is very
pertinent. In the process of preparing my own sermons I have often
wrestled with the text; knowing that many who would hear the mes-
sage might find themselves on the conviction side of the text; to be
sure even pastors find themselves in that same position while they are
preparing their sermons.
My preaching professor, in seminary, often reminded his students that con-
viction is a part of redemption; one has to know that they are in the wrong be-
fore one can feel God's forgiveness and redemption. But he also reminded
his students that once you have allowed the conviction to come forth from the
text they should then not forget that God's message of redemption was to be
preached as well.
I wonder which part of that 30 minute sermon got ate by the Pastor’s dog?
Two thousand years ago a small child came forth into the world to speak a
message of redemption to a people who had been weighed down through the
convictions of God’s laws. This child was a messenger of Hope to a people
who, for various reasons, had only heard part of God’s message.

Family Promise....
“Lord, you have been a refuge for the poor, a refuge for the
needy in their distress, a shelter from the storm and a shade from
the heat.” – Isaiah 25:4
Family Promise of Phoenix provides emergency shelter, food, and support services for
families who find themselves on the edge of panic. The 60 day program allows families
to have a safe place to stay each evening, housed in hosting congregations across the
Valley. Each evening, families are transported to these local churches where volun-
teers have prepared a hot, healthy meal for them. Other volunteers join the clients,
share dinner and spend the next few hours playing, reading, assisting with the children’s
homework, or simply being present to the adults. Everyone has a story. Everyone
wants to be heard. These volunteers stay overnight, and in the morning, give a wake-
up call to make sure the families are ready for pick-up at 5:30 a.m., when they return to
Family Promise centers for showers, breakfast and before school, work or job inter-
views.
New Song UMC is grateful to be part of this program, serving as an affiliate partner with
Faith UMC. Our church is unable to host clients overnight due to distance and limited
space, and Faith UMC is unable to provide enough overnight hosts for an entire week.
Our partnership with them allows us to participate in a very real hands-on way and al-
lows Faith UMC to continue providing much needed housing.
In addition, twice a year, New Song UMC has a collection drive for donated items that
are needed by Family Promise. When a family graduates from the program and is
ready to resume their independence, they are often in need of basic household items
such as bedding, cooking items, small kitchen appliances, etc. These would not be
things you’d take with you if you were limited to the space in your trunk or were depend-
ing on others to store for you. The Client Store allows people to access many of these
items through vouchers, earned while they are in the program.
How can you help?
Volunteers to serve as an overnight host
As you shop, occasionally make an extra purchase of paper products for Family
Promise
Pray for the families in the program and those who are on the wait list to get ac-
cepted.

LIGHTENING UP..... (continued from page 3)
Christmas day has come and gone, the advent festivities have
moved many this season. You survived the crowds while shopping: In
the midst of all this human activity there still remains the fact that the
father sent the Son on our behalf. If you are not already doing so,
please take a moment to reflect upon God's redemptive powers that
are available to you through the Christ child. Light a candle in his
name and begin to feel the burdens of this season lighten. "Indeed,
God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in
order that the world might be saved through him" (John 3:17). We
have nothing to fear since we are a part of God’s family. May God's
peace and love be especially close to you on these beginnings of a
new decade. Grace and Peace Rev. Lyndon R. Mason
P.S. Please don’t buy me any dogs!

“Making Quilts for those in Need”!
In December we sorted, bagged and tagged 50
quilts for the children of our families in need.
We had extra quilts, so 6 went to the VA, 1 to Assisted Living
and 15 to Family Promise. We also had 4 table toppers for
Family Promise. Three quilts will be kept at the church for an
emergency situation.
Meetings for the quilting group are held the third Saturday at
9am in room #4—we’re looking forward to a good attendance
on January 18. Planning ahead, we will offer Quilting 101, a
class for anyone who knows how to sew but would like to
learn quilting techniques on February 15.

CAN YOU HELP?...We are passionate about bringing the healing effect of dogs’ unconditional love into the lives of people in the community, especially those who are home-bound or in a medical facility. Becoming a therapy dog team involves a bit of work beforehand, but the effort is well worth it. If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming a Dog/Handler team for therapy work, please contact us at:
Interested in becoming a part of our ministry? You don’t have to own a pet or even be a member of New Song to join. You just need to have a desire to serve God by planning and participating in activ-ities which involve enriching the lives of others by sharing our pets. We also strive to do God’s will as He challenges us to care for all the animals of the Earth by hosting educational activities with guest speakers and organizing collection events to donate to area shel-ters. We meet at the church on the fourth Saturday of the month at 9:00 a.m.
CARE & NURTURE REPORT

CAMP NEW SONG………
Thanks to everyone — the donors, the buyers, the work-
ers — you were all just great. We are still counting as
money is coming in from the garage sale. Even though
we had to shorten our time this year, the sales were
good.
Animals 4 God .... There are times when our dog, Megan, will just sit and stare at us. For Megan this can be anytime or anyplace. So, I did a little research on why dogs stare at
us, and Animals 4 God would like to share those reasons with you.
“Longing Eyes: Your Dog Wants Something” (Fratt, 2019) -- Basically, your have something your dog wants. It “could be a toy, a tasty morsel, or a hand that should be petting her. Staring at you can also be a sign that your dog wants to be let outside” (Fratt, 2019). It would seem you trained your dog to do this when you absentmindedly petted her or fed her dinner when she was staring at
you. She feels you rewarded her for staring.
“Tilted Head: Your Dog is Confused -- Dogs that stare during training, espe-cially with that cute tilted head, are probably a bit confused. Your dog is trying to figure out what you want – much like you’re trying to figure out what she
wants!” (Fratt, 2019)
“Direct Stare, Hard Eyes: Your Dog is Tense” (Fratt, 2019) – This stare is usually a warning. “Right before many dog bites, the dog gives a ‘hard stare.’ This stink-eye look can last just a split second or go on for minutes” (Fratt, 2019). If any dog gives you this type of look, the best thing to do it back off. Generally, this type of “stare is accompanied with a stiff tail (wagging or not), still body, closed mouth, dilated pupils (wide pupils), a lowered head, ears pinned forward or backward, and a strong body shifts forward or backward. You might not see
all of these signs at once, but look out for any combinations” (Fratt, 2019).
“Soft Eyes: Your Dog Loves You – On the exact opposite end of the spec-trum, your dog might be looking into your eyes because she loves you. An arti-cle in Science from 2015 found that dogs and humans both release oxytocin when they look into each other’s eyes” (Fratt. 2019). This type of stare “will probably be accompanied with a soft or sweeping tail wag, a light pant, relaxed
ears, and normal-sized pupils” (Fratt, 2019).
“Herding and Hunting: Your Dog is on the Prowl – Herding dogs are also prone to staring, as a way to control sheep, goats, cows, toys, and people. The famous ‘eye’ of a Border Collie comes out as the dog stalks a flock of stock, a toy, or a playmate. “Hunting dogs also often stare when they’re on the prowl. This behavior can be playful or serious, but comes out often when you’re in the middle of a game or the forest. If you notice your dog suddenly slow down, low-er her head, and stare into the distance (or at a moving object), she’s probably in
hunting or herding mode!” (Fratt, 2019)
We are still holding the Animals 4 God’s Reading Program the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. You are welcome to bring your children or grandchil-
dren to read to our dogs. (Cont. on page 16)

Our 2020 stewardship campaign was a resounding success! Of the pledges that were
made on Consecration Sunday, 35 families increased their giving for 2020. The pledg-
es received, amounted to more than a 45 percent increase above last year’s giving.
Hurray! This will mean that our ministries focus for 2020 will be off to a good start.
We still have some pledges coming in before the budget can be set for 2020. So,
please keep your church and its leaders in prayer during this process.
Consecration Sunday’s festivities concluded with our outstanding potluck dinner put
on by the members of our church. A big thanks to everyone who served with the
cooking and decorations. A special thanks to Laura Holloman and the stewardship
committee for making this year’s campaign a roaring success.
Because we were able to take one step up in our giving, we will be able to take many
forward in the service of our Lord!

86 pledges of over $255, 215 and they are still arriving. This enables our overall
operations and the continuation of our ministries both at the church and in the
greater community.
We have also paid all our apportionments five years in a row now!
As Proverbs 22:9 states: “Those who are generous are blessed, for they
share their bread with the poor.” You have certainly shown generosity of your
hearts this year and in your responsive pledges for 2020. For this, your Finance
Team is exceedingly grateful.
Wishing a Happy and Healthy New Year to all of you!
Laura Holloman, Chairwoman Reverend Lyndon Mason
Report from Trustees
We are looking at scheduling another work day in January and it will be January 11th
beginning at 8am. We will start in the sanctuary —that way we will be done in there
before the UMW meeting at 10:30am. There are a number of items needing our attention
in and around the church property. A sign up sheet for helpers will be available in Janu-
ary.
Rick Winnan, Co-Chair of Trustees
REMINDER!!
Getting your calendar dates approved: All building use request forms MUST be
given to Jeannie before being submitted to the Church Council. Jeannie will veri-
fy the dates are available and then pass the request on to Church Council for
final approval. If there is a conflict, Jeannie will notify you.
We are a VERY BUSY church, Praise the Lord, and space is limited. We can avoid
infringing on space reserved by other groups if we just work together. The
building use forms are in the office in the file next to the mailboxes. Thank you
for your cooperation. Pat Howard, Chair, Church Council
KNITWITS GROUP

feel free to contact Kimi Ivey or Michelle Ferguson.

or an experienced one, is highly encouraged to come and see what we are all about.
We have a new meeting place: Fellowship Square, Catalina Room, 1pm, 3rd Wednes-
day.

FOOD BANK JOB DESCRIPTION
We are looking for New Songers, of all ages, to help sort food once a month
at the St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, in Surprise. We work from 1:30 to 3pm
the third Thursday of every month. Our group has dwindled and unless we
get more help, we will have to give up this very needed service to the com-
munity. The work is not difficult and you do what you are physically able to
do. Please consider helping. It is a great opportunity to meet other church
members and know that you have helped others in our community.
Please call Jerry Brawner, 623-546-5846 for more information!
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL — new time — 10:30am
We are trying a new time to meet for Adult Sunday School beginning January
5th. We hope you will come and join us. We will meet at 10:30am in the pre-
school area, room 4. Pat Howard is our leader.
Our new books are here and the title for this winter session is “Promise.”
Most people agree that life, even the committed life of faith, does not follow a
straight line. We may think we know where we want to go. We may even be-
lieve we know how to get there; but rarely do we get from where we are to
where we want to be without side trips, wrong turns, and general distractions.
Our lessons this quarter, written by Michelle Morris, begin with that sure
hope, that firm expectation that, in spite of what might be happening in the
present, God has a good future for us. Jan Turrentine, Adult Bible Studies @ Cokesbury
