    Bring books for Literacy Month!

Welcome back to our first in-person meeting since March. It will be so much fun to see everyone again. Be sure to get your reservation in early because our attendance will be limited in order to be appropriately distanced. All health care precautions will be taken including mandatory masks while not eating. September is Literacy Month. At our meeting we will be bringing attention to literacy

issues including collecting Pre-K and elementary age book donations. The National Federation of Republican Women’s participation in MELP will be recognized. SCRWC members and associates, my message to you today includes a call to action by all Republicans and concerned citizens. In the upcoming fall election, the Democrats are very energized, which I saw during the August primaries. They were out in large numbers, not only voting but campaigning as well. I know that all of us will be voting, but there are so many Republicans who have become complacent and don’t see the urgency to vote in this election. We must encourage these voters to go to the polls, which are very safely set up for Covid-19 prevention in Shelby County. If this is still not an option, please help a friend get an absentee ballot as soon as possible in order to return it to the Election Commission in time to be counted. Also, as campaigning begins, we must help. It is very easy and fun to hold up a sign, address envelopes, etc. So, please respond when called upon. Our meeting speakers especially need our help in at-risk districts that must be kept Republican or turned. Our SCRWC PAC will be distributing a total of $9,000 to assist Tennessee candidate campaigns financially. This is what we raise money for every year, but personal involvement is still a very effective way to campaign. I am very serious in saying that our entire conservative way of life in this country will be changed if Democrats are elected, including that of our children and grandchildren. It is IMPERATIVE that we get out the REPUBLICAN VOTE!!!

“Merry Christmas!” Words to warm our hearts toward family, friendships, and the SCRWC Christmas Tea planned for Tuesday, December 8. With this in mind, please start thinking about new or gently used items you can donate for our Christmas Tea fund raising raffle. For the raffle, the name of the winner of each item will be drawn instead of a number. This should speed up the process on this fun and festive occasion. If you have any questions concerning donations or raffle item pick up, please contact me at 830-4960 or via email at [email protected].

    Thank you!Suda Calabro

    SEPTEMBER IS LITERACY MONTH

“Leaders are Readers” is the theme of the National Federation of Republican Women’s Mamie Eisenhower Library Project. Each September SCRWC donates books, which contain NFRW bookplates along with our club name, to the Germantown Library. In addition, we also donate books to a local school. This year our designated school is White Station Elementary School. Learning to read in the early grades leads to reading to learn thereafter. Ladies, please bring Pre-K through 5th grade appropriate books to our September general meeting so that our number of books will create meaningful reading stepping-stones for a great number of young students.

    Election News...

September is Literacy Month, and we are sponsoring a book collection for donation to Pre K through 5th grade students at White Station Elementary School. The school is especially in need of books for Pre K through 3rd grade students, but are eager to receive any books donated. Please bring your books to our September 8 meeting, and we will deliver them to the school. Any additional books donated to White Station Elementary after our September meeting can be dropped off on Wednesdays at the Republican Headquarters at 750 N. Germantown Parkway through the month of September. There will be a drop off box for the books.

    Every book is appreciated!Suda Calabro

Be Prepared for November 3 By Dee Nollner Shelby County will have 26 Early Voting sites open for 14 days, October 14-29. Properly registered residents can vote at any Early Voting site. On Election Day you can only vote in your assigned precinct. Verify your precinct and districts at GoVoteTN.com. You will be voting for President, U.S. Senator, U.S. Congressman, your state representative, and various suburban aldermen and school board candidates. Know your districts. Vote Early if possible, since unforeseen events might prevent you voting on Election Day. Wear your mask. A pen and a single-use stylus are provided. Anyone needing help can sign a form (that day), and bring your own helper. Remember, in order to vote in person, you must have a photo ID issued by the State of Tennessee or by the Federal Government. If you do not have a photo ID, inquire now about a free voting-only-ID at GoVoteTN.com. If you register by mail, you must vote in person the first time you vote. You must be registered at least 30 days before an election. Once you are properly registered you do not have to reregister unless you move and register elsewhere. Update your information if you move within the county. Your vote is important, use it. If you will be out of town or unable to vote in person during Early Voting or on Election Day, you may request an absentee ballot (‘mail-in ballot’ in other areas). An application for absentee is available at shelbyvote.com. Once you receive your absentee ballot, complete, sign, and return it to the Shelby County Election Commission as directed. October 27 is the last day to request an absentee ballot for the November 3rd Election. The first day to request was August 5. Due to necessary processing, ballots will be mailed by the end of September. Military ballots are mailed no later than 45 days before an election. Yours will be mailed as soon as possible after that deadline. State law stipulates that Absentee Ballots must be returned by US mail, UPS, or Fedex. They cannot be dropped off by the voter and must arrive before 7:00 pm on Election Day. shelbyvote.com will have a sample ballot as well as a wealth of information.

A big thanks to all who came out to pick up their SCRWC 2020-21 directories at Judy Kilmer’s house on Tuesday, August 18th! We appreciate that extra effort of helping us get the directories into the hands of SCRWC Members and Associates!!Pictured: Judy Kilmer & Karon Smith

Hear YE, Hear YE, thank you all for working so hard and bringing in members! We still have an urgent call to get eight more new members to meet a small goal for membership, but we also need a total of 13 new members to reach our yearly goal. I know you ladies are eager beavers and want to help by recruiting at least one person to join SCRWC to help us support our Republican candidates. The deadline is October 20th to reach our goal of 150 members for 2020! We will have a drawing at our September 8 meeting for new members and for anyone who recruits a new SCRWC member. Membership is $40 and Associate members $30. You can join online at SCRWC.org!!
