In 1961, the Norfolk and Hampton school boards got together to figure out how to use television for educational purposes. They created Home Room One to offer distance learning. A teacher would be set up in front of a camera and teach multiple classrooms at the same time. Home Room One eventually became WHRO, now owned by 19 school divisions.

As a vital community resource in the field of education, we’ve trained local educators, parents, caregivers, and students for nearly 40 years. Each year our staff helps facilitate three regional educational competitions for students: The Virginian-Pilot Spelling Bee, The Great Computer Challenge, and the PBS Kids Writers Contest. We offer online educational tools through eMediaVA, Virtual Virginia, and the 24 online high school courses being used by school divisions around the Commonwealth.

I’ve been reminded of these projects and others as we approach a new year. With your continued support in 2019, we look forward to accomplishing many more milestones.

Of course we also have a long history of providing television and radio programs that educate, inspire, entertain, and express a diversity of perspectives. This month is no exception. A new season of Finding Your Roots begins on January 8 and explores our nation’s fascinating ethnic mixture as people explore their own diverse histories.

A new six-part series, The Dictator’s Playbook (Wednesday nights starting January 9), explores how past dictators have molded our world. Victoria and Albert: The Wedding, a two-part series, recreates one of the most romantic weddings ever seen (Sunday, January 13), and Independent Lens traces the rise and fall of Elvis as a metaphor for the country he left behind in The King (Monday, January 28).

It looks to be a great month, and a great new year! As excited as I am about our upcoming programs and events, I know none of it would be possible without your generosity. Thank you for your generous support through the years. I hope that 2019 will be an amazing year for you and your family. Happy New Year!

On the Cover

The new year is off to a great start with the premiere of the third season of Victoria. The Masterpiece hit will be returning for its thrilling new season this January, just in time for its political and domestic drama to thaw out the winter chills.

“Do you know what destiny means?” a young Victoria, the feisty monarch played by Jenna Coleman, asks one of her children as she cradles him in her arms. That is a question that will echo throughout the third season of Victoria. As the season begins, the Revolution of 1848 starts to engulf the country and much of Europe, and our Victoria must find a way to find common ground as monarchical structures are threatened.

The runaway period hit was first renewed to return for a third season back in December 2017 following its Christmas Special episode. The series has garnered overwhelming positive reviews for its previous seasons that dramatized the reign of Queen Victoria which began in 1837 and ended with her death at the age of 81 in 1901. Known as the Victorian Era, her reign lasted for 63 years, longer than any of her previous predecessors and resulted in great cultural, industrial, political, military, and scientific advances in the United Kingdom.

The series is expected to run for three more seasons in order to cover as much of Queen Victoria’s reign as possible. Created, written, and executive produced by Daisy Goodwin, Victoria is another Masterpiece smash success with the New York Times calling it “tremendously engaging…immediately gratifying.” Boston Globe proclaims it as “captivating” while Paste Magazine pronounces it as a “royal masterpiece.”

Returning for the third season as Victoria is Jenna Coleman, who exited her sci-fi cult favorite Doctor Who to star in the series. Tom Hughes of Dancing on the Edge fame will once again reclaim his role as Victoria’s devoted, but obsessive, husband, Prince Albert, and he is joined by many more of the previous cast. The third season will also introduce a new antagonist for Victoria to cross political wits and swords with in the name of Lord Palmerston, played by Laurence Fox from the series Inspector Lewis. With the third season of Victoria just around the corner, don’t miss it when it premieres on January 13. New Year Schedule Updates for WHRO-FMAs we kick off 2019, you’ll be hearing more of a new voice on WHRO-FM. Starting in January, Rebecca Evans and Anthony McSpadden will both be on the air during Mid-day Classics; Anthony will continue to be your host from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with Rebecca joining you from 1 to 4 p.m. Afternoon Classics will now start at 4 p.m. You’ll also be hearing more from Anthony on the weekends, as Chaz Stuart will be moving into a fill-in host role. Many thanks to Chaz for all he has brought to WHRO – we hope he enjoys having his weekends back, and spending more time on his own compositions and other projects. We also welcome back Tristan Morris-Mann

Weekend listeners are able to catch up on the week’s news with NPR’s Weekend Edition airing Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Now, they can listen to the latest political events with Left, Right, & Center airing at 10 a.m. Left, Right & Center is the weekly hour-long program that provides a civilized yet provocative discussion about politics, policy, and pop culture. The move to Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. begins January 5. The program, which is taped Friday afternoons, has aired on WHRV Mondays at 1 p.m. for many years. Unfortunately, the program is often dated by airtime. With the new airdate, the discussion is timely and current.

TED Radio Hour, hosted by Guy Raz, joins the schedule Monday afternoons at 1 p.m. The weekly one-hour program is a captivating collaboration between TED and NPR. TED Talks is a launching

as another fill-in announcer and the host of Saturday Intermezzo following our live Metropolitan Opera Broadcasts.

Some things don’t change, however: we will continue to bring you the classical music you love around the clock, thanks to your wonderful support. Happy New Year!

Classical Open Mic Comes to Colonial WilliamsburgEnjoy great classical music in a casual environment in historic Williamsburg. Our next Classical Open Mic will be at Aromas Coffeehouse on Wednesday, January 16 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Afternoon Classics host Wayla Chambo launched our Classical Open Mic series in 2017 to celebrate the vibrancy of our local classical music scene and provide relaxed, unique performance opportunities for musicians of all ages; we’ve welcomed string quartets, pianists, flutists, opera singers, and more.

We look forward to getting to know you better and seeing our local musicians shine through our Open Mics in the new year. We are especially excited to bring this fun event to Williamsburg, a city etched with history, for the very first time.

See you in Williamsburg!

We hope you enjoy the programs on WHRV, and just a reminder—all of our programs are available to listen to anytime, anywhere at whrv.org or through the WHRO app.

If you have been a long-time WHRO audience member, then there’s a good chance that you have probably caught a glimpse of Vianne Webb gracing our television screens with her show Our Place, Our Time back in the late ’80s and early ’90s. It was one of our highly produced series which featured local and international highlights in society, arts, culture, and academic feats. Do you wish you could go back in time to watch that show again? Well, you’re in luck. Our Place, Our Time will be one of the WHRO classics you will soon be able to see again thanks to our recent efforts to digitize archival footage.

Known as The Tape Archiving Project, the initiative is made up of several WHRO departments and former WHRO employees and producers who plan to save and preserve finished programs and raw footage that have been shot since WHRO began operation in 1961.

Although not an easy task, with very skilled and laborious work needed, it is a project near and dear to our hearts. The initial plans were coordinated by Chris Dickon with assistance from Daniel Harrell, and WHRO employees Mary Adams, Chris Gunnufsen, Brian Callahan, Jeff Fine, Heather Mazzoni, and Richard Luong. The project’s mission is to preserve WHRO’s history and information for our audiences in the future.

Now, what does it take to digitize years of footage shot on previous forms of technology? A lot of prioritizing of different procedures, developing ways to clean and record footage, transcribing while digitizing the footage, and of course, a lot of literal and figurative sweat and tears. In addition to Our Place, Our Time, the effort intends to preserve many of the earlier WHRO programs such The Future Project, The Bay: Preserving the Future, Crosstalk and many more.

Through this ongoing initiative, WHRO hopes to encourage and emphasize the importance of the preservation of history and information. Many of our classic shows and footages are of great importance and something we hold dear at WHRO. The Tape Archiving Project is just another step into better serving our community and a way of remembering the things we have achieved and shared with them. Throughout January, some of our archival footage will be available across our many different social media channels. Enjoy and learn!

American Graduatewhro.org/americangraduate

1920s Filmstrips were the height of classroom technology and used for more than half a century

1960s WHRO was Virginia’s first non-commercial, educational television station

1970s PBS was established and Pong first appeared

1980s First personal computers with educational games were gaining popularity

1990s Web-based training emerges

2018 Computers, tablets, and virtual simulators are the educational norms in many classrooms, homes, and businesses

Over the years, educational technology has advanced from filmstrips to fully interactive online classes. At the same time, conventional classroom instruction has evolved incorporating new technologies as tools to enhance learning. This pairing of hands-on education and technology, from pre-K to university, is often described as “Blended Learning.” Though there are many variations that fall under the heading, the U.S. Department of Education defines it as a combination of “online delivery of educational content with the best features of classroom interaction and live instruction to personalize learning” to allow learners to move at a pace that is best suited to their learning style and strengths, and focus on mastery of subjects rather than seat time.

What does that mean? It means great things for students. A blended learning environment offers the best of all worlds as face-to-face instruction and independent and group study are mixed with online lessons to provide students with more opportunity to work on projects with classmates (which simulates real workplace scenarios), access to new and engaging learning strategies, and the ability to gain competency through a variety of learning tools.

Does it work? A Florida study showed that students in blended online courses outperformed students in traditional settings.

A few benefits to blended learning are: it provides access to courses anytime or to courses that otherwise may not be available. For example, if a small school division does not have a teacher for a specific subject, an online instructor-led course, such as WHRO’s Earth Science course, can put a qualified teacher in any classroom. And don’t forget snow days; this can help keep the school schedule on track with the availability of online lessons. Certainly the one caveat is the student must have the internet, and this is something that many school divisions and municipalities are exploring.

Currently, WHRO is completing a 360 virtual decision-making course where the student is “inserted” into a situation where they get information, are able to make choices, and explore the consequences. As the nation looks to increase the graduation rate, meeting the instructional needs of the students is the first priority to help them succeed.
