Private lessons are available for people ages four through adult of all levels and abilities. Rolling registration available throughout the year.

NSM works on two 17 lesson terms - Fall (September-January) and Spring (January-June). By registering for lessons, both you and your teacher are committing to your weekly lesson time for the full term. Lessons can be pro-rated if you join afterthefirstdayoftheterm;summertermismoreflexible,typicallyrangingfrom4-11 lessons.

.EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC & MOVEMENT

Family Music for Toddlers | ages 1-3Each week parent/caregiver and child will sing, chant, move, dance, listen, and play simple instruments together — all activities that strengthens the natural connection between music and movement. Weekly classes feature movement activities for coordination, body awareness and control,explorationofspace,andinstrumentssuchasrhythm sticks, jingles, rattles, drums, and resonator bars. *Children under 1 are welcome to attend with registered older sibling.

Intro to Dalcroze-Eurhythmics | ages 3-4Thisexcitingclasswillintroducethebasicsofmusicandmovementthatwillaidyour child in all aspects of musical study. Simple songs, movement activities, rhythm games will all be used, along with beginning Solfege patterns and basic instruments.

Sing & Move | Section 1: ages 4-5, Section 2: ages 5-6A playful and stimulating environment designed to foster a love and understanding of music through song and movement. Using the Dalcroze-Eurhythmics method, children will build a strong foundation in learning musical concepts, including melody, rhythm patterns, accurate pitch, reading music, tempo, and dynamics — a great introduction towards future instrumental and choir classes.

Music 360: Session 1 | ages 4-5Throughourplay,studentswillexploremelody,rhythmandmovement.Wewillworkonbothcreativeexpressionandmakingmusicasagroup.Wewillintroducecaring for instruments and practice listening skills.

Music 360: Session 2 | ages 6-7Thisclasswillintroducespecificmusicalskillsinajoyfulway.Studentswillalsobeintroduced to rhythmic notation, solfege and performance conventions. Songs and games will provide opportunities for improvisation. Students will practice listening skillsandreflectontheirlearning.

THE NEST AT NSM

The Nest at NSM is a place for local community of caregivers and young children to engage socially with other adults in a supportive, music themed environment. We invite you to come together in our community music school to create a stimulating and collaborative atmosphere with developmentally appropriate activities for our toddlers. Each gathering provides a structure for our toddlers to interact anddevelopsocialskillswithaconsistentcommunityofchildren.Ledbyanexperiencedteacherandmusician,activitiesincludeavarietyofage-appropriateandplay-basedmusicexperiencesdesignedtostimulatecreativity,fineandgrossmotorskills,socialandemotionaldevelopment,andprovideafoundationforfuturelearningexperiences.

Beginning Group Violin | ages 4-6Hereisanopportunitytoexploretheworldofviolininawelcomingandsupportivegroupsetting.Beginnerstudentswilllearnthebasicsoftechnique,musicreading,andsimpletunesinthiscreativegroup class environment through musical games, movement, and ensemble playing. A parent or caregiver attends class with their child.

Beginning Group Recorder | ages 5-8Recorderclassisanexcitingopportunityforyoungstudentstobeintroducedtoplayingawoodwind instrument. We will learn about reading music, playing music as a group, and have lots of fundoingit!Wewillendthetermwithaclassperformance.Nopreviousexperiencewithmusicoraninstrumentisrequired.Eachstudentwillreceivearecorderandlessonbookinthefirstclass.

Beginning Group Piano | ages 4-6This class introduces a solid foundation of keyboard and music skills, including note-reading, ear-training, ensemble playing, improvisation, and composition. Children learn in a small group setting withamaximumoffivestudentsintheclass.Apianoor61-notekeyboardrequiredforhomepractice.

GROUP INSTRUMENT FOR CHILDREN

For children ages 18 months to 3 years, to attend with their caregivers either 1, 2, or 3 days per week, September-June.

GROUP INSTRUMENT FOR ADULTSBeginners Group Piano | adultsA perfect place to start your study. Less pressure for busy adults, fun, and support from the other class members. Subjects of classes will be note learning, how to practice in limited free time, beginning music theory (the language of music), some improvisation (playing without notes) with other class members..

Returning to the Piano – A Group Piano Class | adults with some previous studyPiano class for those with some previous study-no matter how long ago, it will come back! Class will focus on reading music, some group playing, and simple harmony.

Group Violin and Viola | adultsWhether you are a complete beginner or looking for a refresher course, our Group Violin & Viola classisforyou.Thisclasswillcoverfunmusiceachweekinanenjoyable,relaxedenvironmentforadultswhilelearningtheproperposture,holdingtheinstrumentandbow,andbasictechniques.Ifyouhavehadaninterestbuthavenotfollowedthroughonityet,thisistheclasstotry.Inviteafriendandlearn together!

Sing What You Love! Musical Theater Ensemble | ages 7-14Love musical theater? Love singing in a chorus? Let’s combine the two! Come have a blast singing yourfavoritemusicaltheatersongsinanew,excitingway.EverythingfromAnnie,toFrozen,toWickedisapossibility.Learnandimproveuponbasicvocaltechniques,harmonizing,andacting/performanceskillsalongtheway!Classculminatesinafinalperformanceforfamilyandfriends!

Sing What You Love! Popular Music Ensemble | ages 9-14Come be a part of this fun, collaborative musical community where you get to sing the songs you loveandgetexposedtoothergreatmusic!Learnandimproveuponbasicvocaltechniques,eartraining,andharmonizingskillsalongtheway!Classculminatesinafinalperformanceforfamilyandfriends!

GROUP VOICE

Suzuki Private Lessons & Group Classes | all agesSuzuki’s approach to teaching music builds on the principlesoflanguageacquisition.Thoseprincipalsinclude– early beginning, listening, love and encouragement, parental support, constant repetition, learning with other children, and learning to read. Chamber Music Introduction Workshop | all agesMusiciansofalllevelsandagesjoinusforanafternoonofmusicmaking!Explorethevast chamber music repertoire while meeting people with similar interests and maybe playingwithaninstrumentyouneverwouldhaveexpected!

Open Jam Session for Guitar, Bass, Keyboard, and Voice | all agesAfunandrelaxedopportunityformusiciansofallagesandlevelstoplayinagroupwhile learning new songs and playing old favorites. Each week students get to choose the music - everything from rock, pop, country, bluegrass to jazz!

Voice Performance WorkshopThis interactive, hands on vocal workshop will help you unleash your creativity in asafeandencouragingenvironment,andisfocusedontechniquestoaidsingerspreparing for auditions. Students will learn about effective breathing, tailored warm-up methodsandsomuchmore!Usingtheatretechniquesstudentswilllearnperformingand audition strategies. All singers will have the opportunity to perform in class for feedback as well as for any audition preparation.

.CHOIR ENSEMBLESTraining Choir | ages 5-7Thisensemblewillbeanun-auditionedgroupconsistingofchildrenaged5-7yearsof age. Children will be introduced to the fundamentals of choral singing by using their voices to make music. They will focus on building the necessary skills of pitch-matching, listening, and rhythm.

Repertory Ambassadors | ages 8-13*Thisensembleisopenbyauditiononlyandisintendedasthenextstepintheprocessofvocalskillandmusicianship.Emphasiswillbeonpropervocaltechnique,sightreadingskillsandmusicianship.Singerswillexploreandperformsecular,sacred, and popular music as well as music from different cultures and genres. This ensemblewillexhibitthehighestlevelofmusicmakingandchoralsinging.

*Young men in good standing with the Repertory Ambassadors will sing with this ensemble until their voices change or until the directors agree they should enter the Young Ambassadors ensemble.

Young Ambassadors | ages 14-18Thisensembleisopenbyauditiononly.Itisintendedastheculminationoftrainingandpreparationfromwithintheorganization.Thisensemblewillexhibitthehighestlevel of music making and choral singing.

Community Chamber Music for Strings, Woodwinds, and Piano | all ages

The Cambridge Area Choral Ambassadors Organization (CACAO), a program of the New School of Music, consists of multiple choruses for both youth (ages 5-18) and adult singers.

The vision of CACAO:

• Toprovideandupholdanopportunityforsingerstoexploreandexpand theirmusicalskillsthroughartisticexcellenceinchoralmusic

• Toprovideitsmemberswithabroadexperienceofchoralsinging through music from different time periods, cultures, and genres

• To enrich the lives of singers from all cultural and economic backgrounds• Tofosterleadership,self-confidence,teamwork,discipline,and

commitment in all singers• To promote peace, tolerance, and understanding through the medium of

choral singing within the local community and beyond

Chamber Music for Strings, Woodwinds, and Piano | all agesPlayinginasmallensembleisawonderfulopportunitytodeveloptechniqueonyourinstrumentwhileexploringnewrepertoireandworkingwithothers.Eachensemblewillbeformedbasedonexperienceandinstrumentationandwillconsistofnomorethan4students.Eachensemblewillwork toward at least one performance at the end of the term. A placement audition or attendance atanNSMChamberMusicWorkshopisrequiredtohelpwithensembleformation.

All NSM Ensemble members will get the opportunity to work with distinguished guest artists and arts organizations through the Musical Connections program.
