a day in the life of...Sarah MercierAuditJoined KPMG 1 September 2009

I joined KPMG straight after completing my A Levels. KPMG offered the chance to gain a professional qualification alongside valuable work experience. Working in audit, each day is different, and you have the opportunity to gain an insight into a variety of industries. The change from school to work life was challenging, however KPMG has a great support network for trainees. Everybody is willing to help, and along with continuous training and coaching, I feel that I have come a long way in a short space of time.

Outside of the office there are frequent social events and a number of sports teams. These are a great opportunity to get to know people in the office. I also compete regularly in middle distance running. KPMG is very supportive of this alongside work and study, offering flexibility with holidays and working hours so that I can travel to the UK to compete.

a day in the life of...Steph SyvretAdvisory

Joined KPMG in September 2008

I trained in the audit department and completed two qualifications, AAT followed by ACA, before moving to the Advisory department in July 2013.

Since joining KPMG’s advisory department I have had the opportunity to work on a wide range of different projects, including management consulting, due diligence and liquidations. The variety of work that I have had the opportunity to be involved in requires me to learn new skills and adapt quickly making no two days the same. The advisory team providesa great support network making this possible.

There is also a lot more to working at KPMG than your 9 to 5 job.

We are lucky to have very active social and corporate citizenship committees of which I am a member of both. This enables you to build good friendships with your colleagues and gives you the opportunity to get involved in lots of activities, such as wine tasting and sporting activities as well as numerous charity events.

In KPMG’s Tax department, our role is to assist clients in complying with enacted tax legislation, and also to provide advice in response to changes in tax legislation which is both relevant and beneficial to our client’s needs.

We have three dedicated tax partners leading tax professionals in both Jersey and Guernsey, advising clients in the Financial Services, Telecommunications, Property, Retail, Healthcare and Leisure industries, as well as having a substantial Private Client practice.

As a trainee tax consultant with KPMG, you can expect significant responsibility from the outset. A typical day can be varied, and may involve you working on a number of different clients with a variety of different needs. You will be given the opportunity to ‘in charge’ clients covering a wide range of KPMG service offerings.

A typical day may include:

• assisting clients to meet tax reporting obligations;

• analysing points of tax law and providing reasoned advice;

• drafting reports following legislative amendments;

• attending meetings with clients, and communicating over the phone or via email;

• corresponding with relevant tax authorities on behalf of clients.

At KPMG we require our professionals to have a wide range of business skills. For this reason, if you join our Tax practice we shall support you to achieve the professional qualification you choose to study for.

On top of that, you will be given the opportunity to develop tax specific skills by undertaking the Association of Taxation Technicians and the Chartered Institute of Taxation examinations.

Throughout your time at KPMG in the Channel Islands, you will liaise with colleagues from other departments and help to provide the cross functional service our clients require. You may also have the opportunity to gain valuable experience working overseas in another part of KPMG's global network of member firms, as part of Global Opportunities, KPMG’s global mobility program.

Being located in a leading offshore financial centre, the work is varied and interesting. For example, I have prepared personal tax returns and provided advice to multi-national companies.

Working closely with different mangers, each of whom is supportive and instructive; the training environment is second to none which is why I have now become ACA exam qualified and have extremely enjoyed the process!

Morgan JohnsonWork experienceJoined KPMG in 2014King Edwards School Witley: International BaccalaureateWhen applying to KPMG for work experience, I applied purely for the experience and never thought I would be working here the following year. The week was spent with an incredible team with such a community feeling that made me realise that KPMG was definitely the place I wanted to start my career. I felt that the School Leavers Programme would allow me to get a head start in the working world, with fantastic opportunities that would be much harder to get anywhere else. KPMG also has a very supportive environment which makes the challenge of balancing accountancy exams and working a lot easier. My advice to anyone contemplating this career would beto do some work experience. For me, I knew then that this was the place to be and the career I wanted. Getting work experience in this firm gives you a valuable insight in to both the company and the types of jobs you would be doing when you start. It will also help you to decide whether this career path is one which you would like to pursue; however if you do not try it, you will never know! I spent my work experience time here surrounded by people who all made this career decision at some stage (much like you would be doing) so you are able to get invaluable advice, guidance and support.

Reading for schools

Each week during term time, a group of employees from KPMG's Jersey and Guernsey offices attend a lunchtime session at Springfield Primary School and Amherst Primary School to assist the children in developing their reading skills. There are a number of children who take part in this, from all years in the school. This is a great opportunity to work with our local community and helping others can have a positive effect on an individual’s wellbeing.

This has now become a weeklong event, where staff members have the opportunity to go to various charities and organisations throughout the Island to give some practical help or perform some manual labour! In Jersey, this included painting at Jersey Cheshire Homes, landscaping at Maison des Landes, building at Little Oaks Nursery and many others. In Guernsey, employees also enjoyed helping out at various charities such as Société Guernesiaise conservation projects, GSPCA, The North Show, and Les Bourgs Hospice. It is a great day out of the office, and makes a real impact to those in need of some extra hands.

Sports and social

It is our goal that everyone at KPMG should achieve a personal and professional balance in their life. We have always had a reputation as an enjoyable place to work, and we try to live up to it. Sporting and social events happen throughout the year, providing the opportunity to interact and socialise with colleagues across the firm.

Our social activities include team away days, Summer and Christmas balls, table quizzes, concerts, theatre and sporting events.

We have a strong sporting culture at KPMG. We participate in intra corporate touch rugby, football, swimming, athletic competitions and golf events. We also compete in cross island tournaments between Jersey and Guernsey. All these events are really great fun and are a good way to meet colleagues from both of our offices in the Channel Islands.
