NEW R&D and SCNET: Creating sustainable value through
collaborative R&D and competitive funding
• A corporate applied R&D Centre incorporated in Dec. 2014
• Mainly funded by H2020 and other competitive funding for R&D
• 9 onging projects:
• 150 top tier partners (Industry, Academia, Technology)• Global budget of 135 M€ and global grant of 105 M€• EDP Budget of 20 M€ and EDP grant of 14 M€• EDP staff allocated 34 FTE

• Pursuing several opportunities in R&D, namely in the areas of ocean / tidal energy, offshore wind and smart grids
• Shanghai Centre has been positioned as the focal point for technological cooperation between EDP and CTG: 1) New Energy Monitoring System; 2) Support in Distribution and Retail business and technology; 3) Smart Grids demonstration

EU-SYSFLEX – Developing a flexibility roadmap for the EU through 6 demonstrators accross Europe (including PT)
Objectives
• Characterize the needs of a power system with a high share of variableRES (>50%), including which services to be provided and mix ofresources;
• Coordination of centralized and distributed flexibility resources(Storage / Other flexibility resources / System integration)
• TSO & DSO tools for operational control and enhancedtransmission/distribution interfaces
• Market design options for an efficient integration of flexibilityresources in well-functioning wholesale markets
• Develop a “flexibility roadmap” including a study of replicability ofsolutions
• 6 demonstrators: Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, Estonia and Finland

• Management of resources at DSO level towards voltage control, congestion management and forecast and control of active and reactive power

LC-SC3-ES-5-2018-2020: TSO – DSO – Consumer: Large-scale demonstrations of innovative grid services through demand response, storage and small-scale (RES) generation
Demonstrate large-scale integration of TSO’s and DSO’s in widely-participated, pan-European electricity markets and platforms by:
• Using a pool of flexibility provided by small- and large-scale assets
• Testing the needs of grid services for network operators
• Engaging consumers via P2P energy trading and blockchain transactions
• Setting up platforms with applications of IoT, AI, Cloud, Big Data
Needed: 2 Energy Suppliers + 2 ESCOs or Aggregators + 3 TSO + 5 DSO

Exploit IoT reference models to combine services for home/building comfortand energy management based on relevant digital technologies like IoT, AI,cloud and big data services. Large demo pilots should address:

• Integration of renewable energy from distributed intermittent sources
• Support of energy efficiency
• Combined energy services to foster smart energy communities (inparticular P2P energy markets)
