Description of a new species and phylogenetic analysis of the subtribe Cynopoecilina, includ-ing continuous characters without discretization (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae)Juliano Ferrer, Juliana M. Wingert and Luiz R. Malabarba

A new species of the subtribe Cynopoecilina is described from the rio Gravataí basin, laguna dos Patos system,southern Brazil. The relationships of the new species among taxa of the subtribe Cynopoecilina is discussed based on two analyses: one using 71 discrete characters and other with the addition of six continuous characters analyzed without discretization. The addition of the continuous characters resulted in the first fully resolved phylogenies for Cynopoecilus and Leptolebias species, not obtained in the analysis including only discrete characters. Chairman’s Message

Board of TrusTees Business updaTe

arT LeuTerman – aKa secreTary

Hello everyone,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the three retiring members of the Board of Trustees: Charles Harrison, Brian Watters and Matt Kauffman. All three have been valuable members of the BOT and I will miss them greatly as board members. Charles was Chairman when I joined the Board in late 2011 and has served as a model for me as Chairman. Charles has expressed an interest in continuing to serve the AKA on the Internet Committee and I will be calling on his talents and experience in this role. Brian has also been a valuable advisor. He typically listens to the other BOT members and then weighs in with unassailable logic. As such he has been a great help when issues tended to head towards the emotional. I look forward to continuing to work with him on articles for JAKA and other publications. Finally, Matt brought a lot of energy to the BOT. He has a unique force of personality that has helped drive the BOT forward. Matt and Charlie Nunziata have made the AKA Digital Presentation Program a reality. Matt will also continue to serve the AKA in this capacity as well as being in charge of the AKA Facebook Page, and also serving on the Internet Committee. I am also looking forward to working with Bill Logue, Ken Nor-mandin and Rick Ivik in the New Year. I am sure that their unique talents and energy will help the AKA continue to thrive

Speaking of the internet, the AKA is now on Twitter. For those of you who use it, our account is set up to automatically tweet anything posted on the AKA Home Page, and will also be forwarding tweets to Facebook. Hopefully, this will help attract the younger peo-ple who are interested in killifish and who are attached to their mobile devices. You can follow the AKA by adding @aka_org to the people you are following. The advantage to following us is that you will get the latest notices from the AKA as soon as they are posted.

Finally, I would like to wish all of our members a Happy Holiday and New Year. I hope you get some time to spend with your family and friends, as well as spend some extra time with your fish.

Best wishes,Rich Pierce

Items discussed by the Board of Trustees in November includeed:

The completion of the official tabulations for the races for the 015 Board of Trustees of the AKA. Thanks to all who agreed to work for the AKA if elected and congratulations to the three new members – Ken Normandin, Rick Ivik and Bill Logue. Additionally a large “thank you” to the outgoing members for their years of service to the organization – Brian Watters, Matt Kaufman and Charles Harrison;

The discussion and subsequent approval of P-2014-20 – Web Site funding and initiation of external consultant to work on web site;

Preliminary discussions of future Convention locations and associated costs, most espe-cially room rates;

Release for further review of the amended AKA Bylaws; and, last but not least,

A discussion of the honors/awards criteria and the evaluation of a nomination for such an honor/award.

AKA COMMITTEE REPORTS

Current Key Standings

The show season has been very busy. Michigan had a show toward the end of September quickly followed by a Minnesota show. In October there was another show in Texas which included some killie classes. WAKO will have just wrapped up as you receive this BNL, and then the show season will take a break for the winter.

Our top ranking show participants are:1. Art Leuterman 4462. Jim Kostich 2633. Rick Ivik 1664. Keith Cook 1665. David Mikkelsen 130.66. Paul Christ 90.87. Mike Kromrey 80.48. Jim Gasior 809. Philip Kukulski 7410. Jen Kruckenberg 62.8

The next regularly scheduled show should be the Killie Karnival which takes place at the end of February. As always, complete KEY results are available on the AKA website. Support your local show.

AKA Digital Presentation Program

November 2014 Update:

Members continue to download and present the talks. I presented “Killifish for the Advanced Aquarist” at the November 2014 meeting of the North Jersey Aquarium society, where it was well received – you can read all about it at “Finaddicts of the NJAS” page on Facebook.

December is upon us, so I do not expect a lot of presen-tations this month, but January’s right around the cor-ner and general aquarium clubs, especially those in the snow belt, usually need a speaker for their January or February meetings. So, volunteer and spread the word! Remember you get KHY points and can raffle/donate a free 1 year AKA membership to the hosting club.

Sample slides:

How it works:

To obtain the presentation, simply e-mail your name and e-mail address to [email protected]. The coordi-nators will send you a link you can use to download the presentation, in Powerpoint format. A typical presenta-tion is around 30-40 megabytes, so you’ll need a little free space on your computer for the download.

Once you have the contact information for the new member, send that to [email protected]. Please be sure that the contact information contains the recipi-ent’s name, address and e-mail address. If you present at a club, you are eligible for KHY points. Please e-mail Kent Russell, [email protected], for details of the KHY program.

Wild Killifish Collection Commit-tee Seeks Latest Updates

David Mikkelson is requesting anyone who does a collection of killifish anywhere in the world contact him with their latest in-formation. The Killifish Collection Committee plans to update the listings. Dave can be contacted through Facebook (Killish Wild Collections) or his NEW email address [email protected]

Marketing/Communications Coordinator: We are still looking for someone to fill the marketing/communica-tion coordinator position that was formerly held by Dave Suffia. This task involves communicating with other con-servation groups, arranging for articles for both this news-letter and for JAKA, and to disseminate the promotional materials. If interested in this challenge, please contact me.

Aplocheilus lineatus: We are dealing with a few impor-tant issues that were not resolved in 2013. The first of these is our search to find the “original form” of Aplochei-lus lineatus and adopt it as the core species representing the genus Aplocheilus. The term “original form” may be inaccurate as we are having trouble determining just what that is. We have rather arbitrarily defined the “original” as the essentially green fish so common in the 1970’s, the one that were then commonly available in local tropical fish stores. The currently available “Golden Wonder” and “Red” forms are the selectively-bred product of commer-cial Asian breeders. Given the large and inexpensive avail-ability of these commercial forms, collection and distribu-tion of wild stock appears unlikely. As a result, the KCC has abandoned the effort to re-establish a wild form of Aplocheilus lineatus in the hobby.

Epiplatys lamottei Re-launch: Rick Ivik, our new E. la-mottei coordinator has organized a new team for this ven-erable species. If interested in joining this team, please contact Rick at: [email protected].

We are also attempting to identify whether any of the various populations of E. lamottei remain within the hobby. In addition to the aquarium strain, we included three populations in the original breeder program. They were: Nzérékoré and Simandou from Guinea, and Sala-yea, Liberia, the most common in the hobby. If you are maintaining any of these populations, please send me an e-mail at [email protected].

Fundulopanchax oeseri and Fp. walkeri GH2/74 Kutun-se: These species have declined precipitously over the last several years and we have gotten increasingly concerned that they are in trouble in the hobby. We are asking those members holding these species to contact the committee and indicate their status.

Active Breeder Teams: Maintaining any of the following species? Consider joining one of our active breeder teams and help your fellow members in guaranteeing that they will be available to the future generation of killi-hobbyists.
