Sunshine Coast University Hospital (SCUH) will revolutionise healthcare on the Sunshine Coast and offer a range of free public hospital services. When SCUH is fully commissioned, an estimated 10,000 fewer patients each year will no longer have to travel to Brisbane for complex admitted patient care.

SCUH is an important part of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service’s (SCHHS) vision to deliver health and wellbeing through exceptional care, by providing increased capacity and quality of services in the areas our community needs most. It is being delivered as part of the Sunshine Coast Health Campus, which also incorporates the Sunshine Coast Health Institute, the Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital and opportunities for health-related commercial developments.

The new hospital will form part of Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service’s network of hospitals, which includes Nambour General Hospital, Caloundra Health Service, Gympie Hospital, and Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital, as well as a comprehensive range of community and primary healthcare services.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service also purchases healthcare services from the collocated private hospital (until mid-2018) to treat public patients while the new public hospital is built and commissioned. The health service will continue to purchase services from Noosa Private Hospital.

SCUH is Queensland’s first public hospital Public Private Partnership (PPP). PPPs have been used by governments all over the world to deliver large social infrastructure projects such as hospitals and schools.

Exemplar Health, a consortium comprising Lendlease, Siemens and Capella Capital, with partner Spotless Group Holdings Ltd, was selected following a competitive bidding process to join with the Queensland Government for the delivery of the facility.

Exemplar Health will design, construct, partially finance, commission and maintain the hospital buildings (including car parks) and grounds for a period of 25 years from 2017, when the hospital opens. The contract requires the facilities to be maintained to an agreed standard throughout the contract term. This will enable clinicians and hospital management to focus on patient care, while Exemplar Health maintains the built environment.

The PPP contract does not include the provision of any clinical services. Services included in the PPP scope include security, pest control and car parking services.

Public Private Partnership delivery

The public hospital was built by Exemplar Health’s design and construction partner, Lendlease.

The first sod was turned on the site on 26 September 2012 and construction completed late-2016. A period of operational commissioning is underway before the new facility opens in March 2017.
