Welcome

Established in 1861, South Tyneside College is a world-renowned centre of excellence for marine education and training.

South Tyneside College offers courses across the whole spectrum of marine education, including navigation, operations, marine and electrical engineering, communications and catering. The College caters for all levels of study from officer trainee, ratings through to senior officer certification and up to honour degree level. It also provides an extensive range of short courses for the marine, offshore and leisure markets.

South Tyneside College’s reputation for quality is underpinned by outstanding facilities. Its specialist teaching resources are amongst the best in the world for marine and nautical training. Supported by experienced, professional staff South Tyneside College provides an unrivalled training experience.

Independent study resources

Marine Learning Centre (MLC)The MLC provides all the resources needed to support

students in their studies. For the sole use of marine and

nautical students, it provides a range of resource materials

and support facilities all under one roof. This includes:

• Computers with internet and e-mail access. • Workspace areas for self-study. • Reference materials and resources, which are constantly being up-dated. • Staff who are happy to provide individual help and support. • Interview rooms for review, assessment and action planning. Specialist resources

Marine Workshops and LaboratoriesOur extensive marine engineering resources are unrivalled. They include:

• Large well equipped marine plant workshop with a wide range of commercial equipment. These include operational medium speed engines, boiler plant and refrigeration units. • Four machine workshops, fitted to a high standard with hand and machine tools, including lathes, vertical and horizontal milling machines, surface grinders and shapers for the teaching of machine shop and workshop skills. • Two welding workshops, as well as our Tyneside Welding Training Centre. This specialist, industry-standard welding facility is run in partnership with The Welding Institute (TWI), the world leader in Materials Joining Technology. • Two electrical workshops which replicate the generation, distribution, utilisation and transmission of electrical power within a ship. They provide a wide range of equipment including high voltage switchboards and full size generator sets. Simulation plays an important part in the workshops, helping trainees to understand the more complicated parts of power generation. • Four electronics laboratories with modern workstations. • GMDSS stations with a range of simulation, terrestrial and satellite equipment for training in operations maintenance. • An electronic navigation systems laboratory, for maintenance training. It includes a navigation bridge, chartroom and steering flat to replicate the situation on board ship. The equipment is fully integrated which enables students to deal with real-life problems. • Sophisticated control and instrumentation laboratories, with a wide range of hydraulic, electrical and electro pneumatic control systems. Operational and fault finding control problems can be worked through in the engine simulator, providing realistic practical training. • Two navigation chartrooms, supplied with worldwide selections of charts and navigational publications, and extensive stocks of practice charts. High definition visualisers assist in the teaching presentations. • Ships’ cooks are trained using well designed and fully equipped kitchens which supply food to our in-house commercial restaurant and retail outlet. They provide a realistic working environment for the development of theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

Marine Simulation, Ports & Harbours (MSPH)

The first class resources in the MSC make us a world leader in marine simulation training. They are used to train all ranks from cadets to officers, Masters and Pilots. They develop routine work skills but experience emergencies which build up knowledge in the safety of a simulated environment.

The following facilities are available in our multi-million pound, comprehensive, purpose-built suite and in our Port Operations Unit:

• Six Kongsberg Marine (KMSS) Polaris-type bridges, within the Marine Simulation Centre. • Two full mission engine simulators which can be connected to a full mission bridge simulator for combined deck and engine room courses, including slow speed diesel and diesel electric. • Four KM bridges and a comprehensive VTMIS Simulator, in our Port Operations Unit. • A four bridge Transas Simulator, three ‘live’ ARPA systems and a Navigation Aids Laboratory.

Bridges

Our six simulated navigational bridges in the Marine Simulation Centre (MSC) are regularly upgraded to ensure they provide top quality training. They have the capability to be used together or individually and include:

• Two full mission bridge simulators both with 360° field of view. • A four bridge navigation simulation suite and a 120° visual field of view using 50” plasma screens. • All bridges use latest Kongsberg Polaris simulator software and Seaview R5 visual software providing photo-textured day/night visual scenes. • Two full-mission bridges, when used as tugs, are fitted with Azimuth thruster handles, hydraulic winch controls, Azimuth conning displays. and a Voith control console.

Engine simulation

Our full mission engine room simulators feature:

• A reproduction of the control and engine room of a large vessel powered by a MAN slow speed diesel engine. • A reproduction of the control and engine room of a diesel electric power plant found on a cruise vessel. • A control room with consoles which house main engine controls, plant alarm, generator control, pump and compressor controls and oil fired boiler control panels. • Engine room area located on two levels, with full sound and environmental conditions. • Watchkeeping cabin for UMS operations. • Emergency switchboard room.

Our workstation engine simulator has individual workstation units. It is capable of representing the following engine types:

• Various slow speed diesels (MAN and Warsila).

• Medium speed diesel.

• Steam turbine.

• Two diesel electric simulation suites.

• Gas turbine.

Vessel Traffic Services (VTS)

Our two Vessel Traffic Services Simulation suites are fully integrated into both the Marine Simulation Centre and the Port Operations Unit simulation systems.

• The three shore-based VTS Operator work stations in each system have data input from radar scanner locations within the exercise area. • The VTS Operator work stations use the same Norcontrol IT ‘VOC5060’ software which is used by actual VTS and Norcontrol VTMIS installations. • The system can fully interact with any combination of the simulation bridges plus any additional targets under the instructor’s control. • In the advanced Port Operations Unit VTS system, nine operators and up to two instructors can observe a birds-eye view of the VTS area of responsibility; There is also a dedicated VTS Supervisor workstation. • We use digital audio communications, capable of full recording and synchronisation within the exercise scenario for debrief purposes.

Fire Training Centre

Located close to the Marine Safety Training Centre, the fire ground is fully equipped to provide training to the marine and offshore industries. Facilities include:

• A full-size smoke chamber and mock ups of ship/offshore structures

• Fixed fire fighting installations

• A full range of operational extinguishers, hoses, nozzles etc

• A comprehensive range of breathing apparatus

• A range of fire props for setting realistic scenarios

• 8 metre clinker built ship’s motor lifeboat

• 50 man Harding TEMPSC

• 44 man SC 70F TEMPSC

• 4.5 metre Avon inflatable with 70hp outboard engine

A large, practical seamanship area is equipped with a wide range of shipboard equipment and models of ships’ structures and devices. Other accommodation includes modern classrooms and meeting rooms and full catering facilities.

Fire Safety Training

Marine Safety Training Centre (MSTC)

Situated on the riverside at South Shields, the Marine Safety Training Centre (MSTC) has extensive facilities which have been developed to provide the most realistic training environment possible.

Over 100 companies and over 3,000 students each year use the MSTC which is testament to the high standard of training it provides. It incorporates:

An 18 metre x 10 metre, 4 metre deep environmental pool which is used for survival training. It is equipped with a variable wave pattern generator, wind, rain, light and sound effects.

The following are located within the pool area:

• 8-seater helicopter escape module, capable of being used

to simulate dry, wet and capsize situations.

• Helicopter winching arrangements.

• Davit-launched life raft equipment.

• A range of marine and aviation life rafts.

• Survival suits, life jackets and associated survival equipment.

• Offshore platform transfer simulator.

Our jetty located at the MSTC provides mooring and houses the following craft in davits:

South Tyneside College offers the widest range of marine and nautical courses in the UK and at all levels.

Our current course provision is listed on the following pages. If you can’t see what you need,

please turn to page 21 for details of our tailored training. We are always happy to consider

requests for company specific courses or to modify existing provision in line with company

needs, where this is possible.

Officer Training CoursesCadet or trainee officers follow structured training schemes and are sponsored by shipping companies to gain a first Certificate of Competency. Schemes are available for deck, engine and electro technical certification, and all follow similar patterns of periods at College and periods at sea.

The number and duration of phases, and the time needed to gain certification, depends upon the discipline and training programme being followed.

At the end of a successful training course the new officer will hold anHNC, HND or Foundation Degree and a Certificate of Competency, withexcellent prospects for a career at sea.

Deck and Engine rating trainingDeck and engine rating training programmes operate each year or on demand. These provide an entry level into the maritime industry fromwhich candidates can progress if required onto the Rating to OfficerTraining programmes.

Each part of the course, Deck or Engine is a minumum of 3 weeks duration, not including mandatory STCW Short Courses which may be required.

Certificate of Competency CoursesCourses are offered to prepare candidates for all certificates of competency available from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the issuing authority in the UK.

Taught full-time courses are available for all certificates. For some certificates it is possible to follow guided study courses away from orwithin the College environment, assisted by tutorial support. South Tyneside College prides itself on being able to offer students a range of possibilities so that the study method suits individual circumstancesincluding on line and computer based study programmes.

Refresher training is also available for those needing to revalidate certificates of competency as well as any short course certification thatmay be needed to gain STCW certification. Rating to Officer training isavailable for both deck and engine schemes and provide progressionroutes to the higher certification courses.

Degree Level CoursesB.Eng and B.Eng (Hons) Marine EngineeringThese one year top-up degree programmes are offered in associationwith Northumbria University. They develop knowledge and understanding of topics raised on the HND or Foundation Degree in Marine Engineering or Chief Engineer certificate of competency.

Advanced Firefighting Duration: Four days Suitable for: A requirement for a first Certificate of Competency This course is very practical and makes extensive use of the School's Fire Training Centre. Certification is issued provided all requirements are met.

Advanced Tanker Training (Oil, Gas and Chemical) Duration: One week for each course Suitable for: Senior officers and others with immediate responsibility for loading, carrying and discharging such cargoes These courses meet the STCW requirements. A course certificate is issued by the College, which may be converted to a Certificate of Competency Endorsement when seatime requirements have been met.

Basic Safety Training Duration: Various Suitable for: All new entrants to the merchant navy The following courses are required for all new entrants: Personal Survival Techniques; Fire Prevention and Firefighting; Personal Safety and Social Responsibility; and Elementary First Aid. Most of these qualifications are prerequisites for more advanced training.

Global Maritime Distress and Safety System - General Operator Certificate (GMDSS GOC) Duration: Ten days (including examination) Suitable for: Those who operate GMDSS communication equipment on statutory fitted vessels in any sea area A holder of this certificate may be designated the GMDSS operator for a vessel. It is required, along with other STCW certificates, before a professional watchkeeping certificate may be granted. Successful candidates will be awarded the GMDSS GOC on behalf of the MCA.

Global Maritime Distress and Safety System - Long Range Certificate (GMDSS LRC) Duration: Five days (including examination) Suitable for: Those who operate GMDSS communication equipment on non-statutory fitted vessels in any sea area Candidates who take this course may also study for the Inmarsat Module, which covers Inmarsat A, B and C. Successful candidates will be issued the GMDSS LRC on behalf of the MCA.

Global Maritime Distress and Safety System - Restricted Operator Certificate (GMDSS ROC) Duration: Two to three days, depending upon experience Suitable for: Personnel operating GMDSS communication equipment on statutory fitted vessels within 30 miles of the coast in a designated A1 sea area. Also those required to revalidate their STCW certification and are not the designated operator in any sea area other than A1. Successful candidates will be awarded the GMDSS ROC on behalf of the MCA.

Global Maritime Distress and Safety System - Short Range Certificate (GMDSS SRC) Duration: One day Suitable for: Leisure craft users and operators of marine VHF This course provides an introduction to marine VHF radio and to the GMDSS system and associated equipment. Successful candidates will be issued an MCA approved certificate.

Medical Care Refresher / Updated Proficiency in Medical Care Certificate (MCA Approved) Duration: Three days Suitable for: On EU Member State flagged vessels, in accordance with Council Directive 92/29/EEC, the Captain and any worker(s) to whom he / she delegates the use of the medical supplies must receive special training updated periodically, at least every five years, taking into account the specific risks and needs connected with the different categories of vessel.

The MCA has interpreted this for UK flagged Merchant Navy vessels as requiring the Master and any person designated to take charge of medical care to hold a MCA approved or recognised Proficiency in Medical Care Certificate or MCA approved Updated Proficiency in Medical Care Certificate, issued within the preceding five years.

Abrasive Wheel Regulations Duration: Half day Suitable for: Those responsible for changing an abrasive wheel or disc All aspects of legislation regarding the maintenance and operation of abrasive wheels and discs are covered. The course can be extended up to two days to gain an assessor qualification for on board training.

Marine Control & Instrumentation Duration: One week Suitable for: Marine engineers and electro-technical officers This course is largely practical and deals with all aspects of electrical and pneumatic control systems. Students will become familiar with basic control theory and will gain an understanding of more complex control systems and their components, including digital controllers, PLCs & SMART.

Diesel Electric Propulsion Duration: Five days Suitable for: Marine engineers and electro-technical officers The course covers the operation and control features of modern electric propulsion systems. It encompasses an introduction to HV power systems, control of propulsion, synchro converter and cyclo converter methods, protection, harmonic problems and solutions. Students will spend a period on the marine diesel electric simulator covering a wide range of practical tasks. A College certificate is issued on completion.

Electrical Equipment for Hazardous Areas Duration: Three days Suitable for: Marine engineers and electro-technical officers on tankers The course provides an understanding of the principles and practice of using electrical equipment within potentially hazardous areas. Equipment in Ex ‘d’, N and ‘e’ is covered, together with the operation and testing of Exi safety barriers. Successful candidates will be awarded a College certificate.

Electronic Navigation Equipment Maintenance Duration: Eleven weeks Suitable for: Students with a Principles Examination or the Radar Maintenance Certificate This course is designed to enable those with a knowledge of electronics to apply it to a range of electronic navigational aids. The course covers the principles of operation and block functional mode of each piece of equipment. When applicable, its interfacing with other items of equipment will be investigated. Approximately 50% of this course will be dedicated to practical work, using the College’s fully equipped laboratory dedicated to

electronic navigational systems. Successful candidates will be awarded the MCA recognised certificate in ENEM.

Electronic Principles Duration: Six weeks (part time) Suitable for: Marine engineers and electro-technical officers This course is for personnel who have some electrical knowledge, but wish to acquire skills in electronics to interpret circuit diagrams and make meaningful measurements in electronic circuitry. Students who are successful in the Principles examination are also eligible for entry to the GMDSS Radio Maintenance and Electronic Navigation Equipment Maintenance courses.

GMDSS Radio Maintenance Duration: Ten weeks Suitable for: Officers in possession of a Radar Maintenance or Principles Certificate This course covers the requirements needed to be the designated on-board maintainer. It has a large practical content, covering all equipment required to meet the SOLAS regulations, including Inmarsat ‘A’. The College has extensive practical facilities to support the course. Successful candidates will be awarded the MCA approved GMDSS Radio Maintenance Certificate.

Shipboard High Voltage Awareness Duration: Five days Suitable for: Marine Engineering officers and Electrical officers, Engineer Surveyors and Marine Superintendants. The course meets the requirements of the MNTB Shipboard High Voltage Training and covers regulations, hazards and safety practices. Extensive use is made of practical exercises on modern high voltage equipment. The emphasis is on the safe working practices and procedures which should be followed before, during and after any high voltage work is undertaken. Successful candidates will be trained and able to work as ‘Authorised Persons’ within a team carrying out high voltage isolation and switching operations. Successful candidates will be awarded an MCA approved Shipboard High Voltage certificate. A three day High Voltage Familiarisation course is also available, successful candidates will be issued with a College certificate.

Marine Electrical Maintenance Duration: Three weeks Suitable for: Serving marine engineering officers The course is designed to increase electrical knowledge and confidence. It is very practically based, with the emphasis on safe working practice. The College has extensive practical facilities and students will complete practical tasks on a range of switchboards, generators, motors, instrumentation systems and simulators. A College certificate is issued on completion of the course, which is widely recognised within the maritime industry. Bespoke versions of this course are available on request.

Power Hydraulics Duration: Four days Suitable for: Serving marine engineering officers This practical course deals with all aspects of power hydraulic systems. Students carry out a range of fault finding tasks to maximise the transfer of skills to the workplace.

Refrigeration and Refrigerated Containers Duration: Four or five days Suitable for: Serving marine engineering officers and electrical officers Short courses are offered to cover the marine aspects of refrigeration and reefer containers. They can be arranged and devised to suit the needs of particular companies.

Shipboard Safety and Management Duration: One day Suitable for: Serving marine engineering officers A range of courses is available to raise awareness of such topics as ISO 9000, Risk Assessment, STCW and the ISM Code. The ISM Code is covered in more detail in a series of one day courses dealing with Rule of Class and Regulatory Bodies, ISM Code Requirements, Writing Policy and Procedures and Internal Auditing.

Technical Management and Specification Writing Duration: Five days Suitable for: Senior officers and other interested personnel This course covers the process of preparing drydocking and repair specifications. It is delivered by shipyard managers, classification surveyors and technical managers to ensure a high level of training.

ARPA (Automatic Radar Plotting Aids) (MCA Approved) Duration: Four days Suitable for: Holders of some pre-STCW 95 radar certification who want to achieve a Chief Mate or Master Certificate of Competency This course deals with the operation and function of ARPAs. An MCA recognised certificate is issued on satisfactory completion.

Combined Fault Finding and Operational Emergency Training Duration: Five days Suitable for: Serving marine engineers This course utilises the engine simulator and is designed to provide engineers with the analytical tools to aid fault finding of plant defects on board ship. Commercial Yachting Courses There is a requirement for larger commercially operated yachts to have a qualified crew. MCA Deck and Engineer qualifications are available and South Tyneside College offers modules and various modes of study to enable candidates to gain certification.

The MCA certification has recently been revised to meet STCW standards with routes via Officer of the Watch to Higher Grade Deck and Engine certification.

Food Hygiene Certificates Duration: One to five days Suitable for: All food handlers Under proposals currently being considered by the MCA, all those involved with the storage, preparation and presentation of food will be required to hold food hygiene certification. The three courses offered by the College all lead to examination and certification. The appropriate course for individuals will depend on their contact and involvement with the handling of food.

NVQ Cooking Certification The College offers courses and assessments leading to NVQ certificates for cookery. It is likely that the ships’ cook certification will be replaced by NVQ certification when the current MCA review has been completed.

Ships’ Cook Certificate of Competency Duration: 12 weeks (two six-week courses) Suitable for: Ships’ Cooks The first six-week course prepares candidates for the part 1 examination, and a second 6-week block course prepares them for part 2. There are seatime and age requirements for each part that must be met before certification will be issued by the MCA.

Research & Development

The Marine Simulation Centre is home to an R&D team who can provide ship models and 3D visual geographic databases that areused by the Kongsberg simulators.

• A geographic database will allow exercises to be developed within a ‘real’ environment • Visuals, as seen from Bridge windows will correspond to real life views • The Bridge Echo Sounder will provide actual depths

• The Bridge Radar will provide an accurate picture for the area modelled • The Instructor can also control the exercise by viewing a birds-eye-view of the scenario as it takes place • There is a large library of ship models ready to use, but any specific ship type can be recreated in-house to customer requirements.

Renewable Energy

Alternative energy is set to be the biggest growth area in domestic energy the UK has ever experienced. To help meet the training demands this industry has created we’vedeveloped a series of training courses in partnership with companies in the industry to ensure they equip the workforcewith the skills and knowledge required to work safely bothon-shore and off-shore.

These courses utilise our extensive and unique facilities in offshore safety training and include Europe’s first offshoreplatform transfer simulator to recreate realistic working conditions.

The safety programmes are supplemented by high voltage,simulation and laboratory equipment which enables our staff expertise in offshore safety and large power generation tocreate up skilling programmes to meet generic and specificemployer needs.

Onsite AccommodationOur purpose-built 200-bed Hall of Residence - Dr. Winterbottom Hall, is located on the College site just 50 metres from the main teaching facilities. It is easily accessible by public transport (bus and Tyneside Metro) and has ample car parking spaces.

Single study bedrooms, which are serviced five days each week, are available.

All have desks, bookshelves and powerpoints, and have access to shared facilities (shower, toilet and common rooms with electric kettles) on the same floor. There are two TV lounges and a games room.

All meals are taken in the College's own dining room, and there is always a choice of menu.

Accommodation is very reasonably priced and available on either a bed and breakfast or a bed, breakfast and evening meal basis.

Unfortunately, the Hall of Residence is not able to offer accommodation on a self-catering or married quarters basis.

Hall of Residence staff are on site 24 hours per day and the car parks are under video surveillance.
