We are pleased to team up with tractor clubs across the United States, Canada, and

even internationally. We support clubs through our distribution of catalogs, this magazine, and promotional items, including hats and t-shirts. Many clubs also submit requests for financial sponsorship for their various events and activities as well as show guides. Members of tractor clubs benefit from the support and experience of their membership. Tractor clubs are a vital part of our community and we support their membership efforts through our tractor club locator feature on our blog as well as our tractor event calendar. If you are not a member of a club or participating in a local tractor show, we encourage you to check out these resources and find a group to get involved with. 2017 marks our 40th year of selling new parts for old tractors®. As part of this mile-

stone anniversary we plan to show our appreciation to our amazing customers. We also wish to take a walk down memory lane and show you a sneak peak of things to come. In this article we take a look at the original ground breaking of our building in Lennon, Michigan along with our current expansion project.

It all officially began in 1977. Our Steiner Tractor Parts (STP) family has grown since then from a single family to over 50 full time employ-ees. We went from operating out of an office in the home of Dave and Sue Steiner, the founders of STP, to our current 45,000 square feet location on just under 40 acres in the village of Lennon, population of just around 500. Lennon is 45 miles northeast from the State’s capitol and is home to a handful of busi-nesses including our warehouse, office, and retail store - all housed under one roof. The construction of this building began in June of 2002.

In April of 2017 we will complete phase one of our latest renovation, adding 40,140 square feet to our warehouse. This space will solve our capacity concern with parts and allow us to update our warehouse with state of the art equipment and technology. We will access our parts quicker and in turn ship your orders faster.

To began the warehouse addition two changes were necessary. First we built a 60’ x 200’ pole barn for the relocation of our tractors we use to test new parts. And second, due to state regulation, we increased our fire retention pond to the size of a small lake. Haha! The unusual mild weather allowed us to start construction as scheduled. The steel was delivered a few weeks back - stay tuned!

For future updates on our renova-tion adventures and to take a look at more pictures from the STP time capsule visit AntiqueTractorBlog.com/category/building

We have been in the business since 1977. Let’s take a walk down memory lane

Just another day on the farmLuke submitted his photos to us last year in our 2017 catalog photo contest. His collection of Farmall tractors caught our attention so we reached out to him for a run down on his vintage classics, family, and farm.

Luke works in sales at his local farm and compact equipment dealership and operates a small 36 acre hobby farm. When asked if he farms as a profession or hobby, he stated, “Well, it feels like a profession - providing for seven horses (someone else’s hobby), but no it’s a hobby for me too.” He added, “That’s what you have to call it when you

don’t make any money!”A current customer of Steiner Tractor Parts, Inc., Luke owns five tractors - all International Harvest-ers. His collection includes a Farmall C, Farmall M, 706 diesel (DT360), 806 diesel, and 1206.

He bought his first tractor, the 1940 Farmall M, nearly 20 years ago. All of the

the year. “Not a lot of show in them yet,” he stated.

In his free time, Luke and his family, Nicole, Jasmyn, and Gage work on proj-ects around the farm. The best thing about living on the farm is “the independence, the sense of accomplishment and the challenge of knowing your “summer” decisions determine how much you like winter.” The majority of their time is devoted to their seven horses, mixed in with tractor pulls.

The family took time out of their busy schedules to take family photos which they submitted in our catalog photo contest. Luke shared, “It was at our farm, during the fall of the year, we were taking family photos in front of different backdrops, the blueberry patch, in and around the barn, and the out buildings. I had an idea to pull a couple of the tractors out - one for each of us - to the front of the barn with the flag in the middle and horse trailer in the background. We thought they turned out pretty well!”

tin and internal engine parts were located at one house and the rest of the front end, engine block, and more were at another farm. The entire rear end was in a rock quarry down the road, but with the help of a couple of friends he ended up getting all the pieces to reassemble it. Everyone of his tractors have a similar story, all fixer-uppers, and as of now, have no sentimental connection. This connection may change as he embarks on restoring the M and 1206. Luke states, “I have had the M and 1206 scheduled to be restored for almost as long as I have owned them, but somehow that money ended up being used to purchase new projects. I think the stable is full (or getting fuller - lol) so hopefully the attention will turn from quantity to quality.” Currently all the tractors work his farm which includes one acre of blueberries and ten acres of hay. Luke does let the tractors play a little by way of a couple local antique tractor pulls and a tractor ride or two during

Jasmyn looking through the tractor’s wheel.

“I have had the M and 1206 scheduled to be restored for almost as long as I have owned them, but somehow that money ended up being used to purchase new projects. The stable is full so hopefully the attention turns from quantity to quality” - Luke talks about his

restoration projects

Our door is always openWhether you just inherited or bought your first vintage classic, we are here to help. Review the 13 most asked questions compiled by our technical support team.

Q. What year is my tractor? We have most of the serial numbers and their location on the tractor listed in the front of each section in our catalog.

Q. What color was my tractor originally?Find an area on the tractor not affected by the sun, fuel or oil and scrape it down to the original paint to use as a color chip. Or contact us as we have most paint codes available so you can purchase your paint locally.

Q. I need a part for my tractor, but I don’t know what it is called. How do I identify it?Send us a picture of the part or better yet simply provide us with the part or casting number on it. We should be able to identify the part.

Q. I need a part, but I do not see it listed in your catalog or on your website. Is the part available?Call or e-mail us, we may be able to special order the part.

Q. I need a carburetor repair kit. How do I find the number on my carburetor? We have images on our website for carburetor number locations (type in carburetor number location). Also we have some popular carburetor images for the number location on page 352A of our catalog.

Q. How do I fix the (insert part name here) on my tractor? We have many free how-to videos on our website. Click on our SteinerTV logo at the top of the page. We may have a helpful video that addresses your problem. We also sell most manuals, otherwise call or e-mail the Steiner technical support team members.

Q. What oil should I use in my engine? If you have a gas, LP engine and you know that it has been rebuilt recently or you change the oil regu-larly, you can use a good multi grade low ash detergent oil like 10W30 or

10W40. Detergent oil will help keep the inside of your engine clean. If the engine has not been rebuilt recently, you do not change the oil on a regular schedule, or you are not sure of the oil that has been used in it, it is safe to use a straight 30W non-detergent low ash oil. If you have a diesel engine you may use a good grade of 15W40 diesel oil.

Q. What size of rear rims do I need to order?Normally you can use rims up to 2” wider or narrower than the tire, i.e. a 10” inside width rim will fit a 9.5 to a 13.6 tire.

Q. I need an overhaul kit or piston rings for my tractor. What infor-mation do I need to order a kit or rings? We will be asking you for the tractor make, model, and engine type (gas or diesel). We also need the bore size (if it’s a non sleeved block), rod, and main bearing sizes. If you require

Page 9: New product spotlights. New parts you ... - Steiner Tractor

9

just piston rings we will need the bore size and ring thickness. We may also ask the sleeve thickness (flathead Fords) or the raised num-ber block casting numbers (IH C113, C123).

Q. How do I order a clutch or clutch kit for my tractor? It is best to pull the old one and verify the diameter and spline count. There are only a few tractors that used one clutch size and type.

Q. My gas, LP tractor tries to die after running for a while. How can I tell if it is an electrical or a fuel issue? When your tractor starts to die, pull the choke out and see if it attempts to stay running. If it runs it is starving for fuel, (check the tank, sediment bowl, and fuel line for a blockage). If the engine dies after pulling the choke out it is most likely electrical. Perhaps the coil or condenser is breaking down, etc.

Q. I need a tune up kit for my tractor. What information do I need to order the correct one? There is a tag or imprinted number on the distributor or magneto housing you must locate. We list the tune up parts by the distributor or magneto number, unless a certain model ONLY used one type. If you cannot find the tag or imprinted number you can send us a picture and we will try to help identify what parts you need.

Q. I need a radiator cap for my tractor, but I see that there are pressurized and non pressurized. How can I tell which one that I need?A pressurized cap will have a spring on the underside of the cap. A non pressurized will not have a spring under the cap.

We suggest that you have an operator’s manual, a service manual and a parts book for your tractor as most of the questions can be answered with these manuals. If you see a part on our website and would like more information or how to install it, look below the part for “Instructions”. Call or e-mail us at [email protected] if you have any questions, we are here to help!

The northern lights were putting on a show for all the farmers on the North Dakota prairie during planting in May 2016. This was taken in our field just a few miles south of the Canadian border near Hannah, North Dakota. The image was created by taking several long exposure photos throughout the night and stacking them in Photoshop which created the star trails.

We grow small grains on the North Dakota prairie and also do custom harvesting. We will be leaving soon for Kansas. My dad, who is no longer with us was a die-hard John Deere fan and always said he bled green. He restored many old tractors over the years (not all green). He would find them as junk in the trees and make them look new.

“I have begun restoring my father’s 1951 Ford 8N. He bought this in 1975 for $600 and used it around his small farm after his retirement. He passed away in 1997 and the tractor sat unused in our barn in Lafayette County, Mississippi until two years ago. I had a friend haul it to Shannon, Mississippi where John Ivy completely rebuilt the engine for me. Now I am cleaning and stripping old dirt, peeling paint and repainting. It runs better than ever and I can now use our old bush hog to mow our pasture.”

Crank it up:A Main Street favorite

Mike Dudukovich’s photo of his 1959 Ford 871 Select-O-Speed is featured in our 2017 catalog. He writes, “My younger brother (Pat) purchased the tractor from an individual who had used it to grade and maintain baseball fields. Pat used it for a short time on his farm then started to travel due to an out of state job opportunity. The tractor sat for three years. I called him one day and asked, “What are going to do with the tractor”, he said

“it’s yours if you want it.” Never passing up a free offer, I went and got it. It sat for an additional three years in a warehouse until I dug it out and started the restoration. With the assistance and encouragement of a lot of friends and sixteen months of busted knuckles, we finally got the tractor completed. It is now a parade tractor that will finish out its golden years driving down Main Street USA every chance we get.” Our complete album can be viewed at www.SteinerTractor.com/tractor-photo-winners

Crank it up: Pretty pink tractor

The following photo was submitted to our annual catalog photo contest by Chuck and Leslie Sabo from Virginia. Chuck writes, “This 1943 Farmall B was bought at a sale by my late father, Charles Sabo Jr., and the two of us planned to restore it. A few months later, he found out he had cancer and passed away shortly after. Under the circumstanc-es, it was hard to find the motivation to restore it without him. Ever since I was old enough, I wanted to be right up under him working on tractors, we had even talked about the plans we had for the B. One day, I asked my then fiance to drive my 1936 Case. She jokingly replied,

“l’m not driving a tractor unless it’s pink!” That was the motivation I needed and decided to pull the B out of the shop and restore the tractor for her. I surprised her with it on our first year anniversary and it’s been turning heads ever since. I know painting the tractor pink would have never crossed my father’s mind and he may have said, “Son, what are you thinking?” To know the joy that it brings us when we ride in parades, participate in charity events, and go to shows, he wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.” Our complete album can be viewed at www.SteinerTractor.com/tractor-photo-winners

Keeping it cool with John Deere

Sometimes we get an order for a part and it does not end up exactly where we think it will. Look at the John Deere decals Chris Sprangler of Michigan bought for his refrig-erator, but as you can

see this “John Deere” will look great in his shop or home.

What is a “Black Stripe” series IH tractor?

In 1976 IH needed to move the existing 66 series tractor inventory before the introduc-tion of the new 86 series tractors in 1977. The marketing term “Black Stripe” series

was used to help sell the 66 series before the introduction of the new 86 series.

Went to a car show and brought home a tractor

Ashley Reitenauer from Pennsyl-vania submitted her restoration story to our blog. Ashley writes,

“I have been looking for a tractor for years, but all the ones I found were way out of my price range or so far gone nothing could be done with them. So in August the family and I went to the yearly big car show. As we walked around in the car corral looking at everything for sale, I spotted tractors tucked away in the corner. So we took a look at them, spoke to the guy to make a deal, and walked away with a 1945 John Deere H. Yes you heard it correctly, we went to a car show and came home with a tractor! She had some cosmetic issues but ran great. We brought her home and replaced the hood and grills and she is looking good. I have a little more work, painting that needs to be done but other then that she fits just fine into our family.” For more restoration stories visit www.AntiqueTractorBlog.com

The following story was submit-ted to our blog by James Harmon from Iowa. He writes, “This 1949 Massey Harris 44 was built from the ground up from a tractor that went through the Mississippi River flood of 1993 over in Mier, Illinois. I bought it out of a newspaper ad and it sat in pieces in a shed. Some of the tractor was still packed full of river sand.

At the time I was thinking about going into stock car racing as a hobby, but my Dad had another dream for me instead. He worked for a Massey dealership for nearly 25 years and the love of tractor pulling was always a dream of his. So we brought the tractor home and started building the pulling tractor. I pulled it for a few years until I moved away from home

then sold it to my Dad. He pulled it up until his passing in May of 2013 and us kids sold it at his estate sale.

My younger sisters grew up going to pulls with this tractor and Dad so we bought the tractor back and I pull it to this day in our Dad’s memory. Each and every pull I go to I still hear a lot of stories from pullers about how my Dad could make the Massey “walk the dog down the track.” He always pulled 4500 lb. – 6500 lb. weight classes with it.

We have started an annual tractor pull in my Dad’s name and for his love of tractors. We also award a scholarship to at least one FFA student each year.” For more restoration stories visit www.AntiqueTractorBlog.com

2017 cover winnerBrian Vough from Maryland My father and I purchased the tractor almost 10 years ago and we finished the restoration in early 2014. The tractor is a 1952 Ferguson TO-30 with a Ferguson AO-28 two bottom plow. This is the same make and model my Grandfather, Merle Vough, bought as his first tractor when he switched from farming with horses. The picture was taken on the family farm in Kingwood, PA where my Grandfather farmed well into his 90s. He passed away earlier this year at the age of 97 and the tractor is now running in loving memory of him.” See the complete results of our photo contest at www.SteinerTractor.com/tractor-photo-winners
