ON DIT--That Jack Frost, instead of honor- ing us with brief visit, acoording to his annual oustom, has permanently located himself in our midst. He acted yesterday anud the nightprevious as if the town belosged to him. In the morning, " Old Father MarsisLip"' wr ornamented with a ruflot of the rarest ice-laoe5, extending a foot or two from the shore, wherever the current was not strong. The oisterns, tube, puddles and gutterswere full of loe.water, andwe hadice-sunbshine all day. The weather waspretty toloaok at, but notprettyto feel, un- less those whoveutured into the streetswere fortified out side by wool, or Insideby cordialsappropriate to' the season. IFTI DISTRICT COURT.---The whole time of this court was occupied during the day in hearing the trials of the casesof the city of New Orleans against Thor. Jorda and against 0. Cappella, who were sued for the smount due for their licenses as coffee-house keepers - loth the careswere tried by jury, and a verdict rendered in each in favor of the city, for the anmount of the license levied, o $315, with interestat eight per cent andfLo per cent.commissions fsor Assistant CityAttorney's fees, after the most strenuous defense which could be made in their behalf by their counsel. The caseswere conductedby L Iiestand, the able, correct and faithful Assistant City Attorney, in behalf of the city, and Messrse. Coliins & Clack for the derindants. There are a number of similar eases yet on trial, and the defendants will doubtless flnd litigation rather an rexpensive luxury, when tnaken in conneotion with the fact that the Supreme Court has lately deoided that theyare also liable to fineand imprio- onmeat In a criminalprosecution, for kreeping coffee- houses without fert having obhtained a licensefrom the city corporsation. F'RST DISTRICT CouRT.--.Anofhr Contesta- ion eEnded in the scsal Iay -- Yesterdey, the trial of the caseof Crane vs. Mitchell, contesting the office of First Justice of the Peace, wasconcluded. The jury rendered averdict of ten for Mitchell, the Americancandidate, and two for Crane, his opponent. The oort then ad- journed. The result surprised nobody; for the folly and impotenpcy of these contestations is nowso clearly demon- strated that any one may anticipate the result before a caseis takenup. However, we supposethe foolishness will be kept up. Nobody suffters by it but the poordevils in the patishprison,a fair peoportion of whom. at least, but for theseprotracted election contests, wouldhave had their trialsby this time and he nowat liberty. A HOUSE FOR OLDHICKORY.-A wooden struO- ture, half house and half stable, nowchallenges the ob- servation of all who passJackson Oquare. tais erected over the pedestal of the Jacksaon monument, and is de. signed to shield Old Hickory and his charger-or sat leasrt the bronze effigiesof the same-from the vulgargaze of the public during the practical partof their installation. The gatesof the square are looked as a bar to all inqui- sition. It is the rumor around that vicinitythat when the statue shallbe ready for the ceremonial lonstallatlon, Godard will lift the house up with his big balloon, and set it down somewhereon Canal street-either on the Custom-House or over the Artesian wslil DuE• WITHI SHOT Gaee.--J. CITY ITEMS.

ON DIT--That Jack Frost, instead of honor-ing us with brief visit, acoording to his annual oustom, has permanently located himself in our midst. He actedyesterday anud the night previous as if the town belosgedto him. In the morning,

"Old Father MarsisLip"' wr

ornamented with a ruflot of the rarest ice-laoe5, extendinga foot or two from the shore, wherever the current wasnot strong. The oisterns, tube, puddles and gutters werefull of loe.water, and we had ice-sunbshine all day. Theweather was pretty to loaok at, but not pretty to feel, un-less those who veutured into the streets were fortified outside by wool, or Inside by cordials appropriate to' theseason.

IFTI DISTRICT COURT.---The whole time ofthis court was occupied during the day in hearing thetrials of the cases of the city of New Orleans against Thor.Jorda and against 0. Cappella, who were sued for thesmount due for their licenses as coffee-house keepers -

loth the cares were tried by jury, and a verdict renderedin each in favor of the city, for the anmount of the licenselevied, o $315, with interest at eight per cent and fLo percent. commissions fsor Assistant City Attorney's fees, afterthe most strenuous defense which could be made in theirbehalf by their counsel. The cases were conducted by LIiestand, the able, correct and faithful Assistant CityAttorney, in behalf of the city, and Messrse. Coliins &Clack for the derindants. There are a number of similareases yet on trial, and the defendants will doubtless flndlitigation rather an rexpensive luxury, when tnaken inconneotion with the fact that the Supreme Court haslately deoided that they are also liable to fine and imprio-onmeat In a criminal prosecution, for kreeping coffee-houses without fert having obhtained a license from thecity corporsation.

F'RST DISTRICT CouRT.--.Anofhr Contesta-ion eEnded in the scsal Iay -- Yesterdey, the trial of thecase of Crane vs. Mitchell, contesting the office of FirstJustice of the Peace, was concluded. The jury renderedaverdict of ten for Mitchell, the American candidate, and two for Crane, his opponent. The oort then ad-journed. The result surprised nobody; for the folly andimpotenpcy of these contestations is now so clearly demon-strated that any one may anticipate the result before acase is taken up. However, we suppose the foolishnesswill be kept up. Nobody suffters by it but the poor devilsin the patish prison, a fair peoportion of whom. at least, but for these protracted election contests, would have hadtheir trials by this time and he now at liberty.

A HOUSE FOR OLD HICKORY.-A wooden struO-ture, half house and half stable, now challenges the ob-servation of all who pass Jackson Oquare. tais erectedover the pedestal of the Jacksaon monument, and is de.signed to shield Old Hickory and his charger-or sat leasrtthe bronze effigies of the same-from the vulgar gaze ofthe public during the practical part of their installation. The gates of the square are looked as a bar to all inqui-sition. It is the rumor around that vicinity that whenthe statue shall be ready for the ceremonial lonstallatlon,Godard will lift the house up with his big balloon, andset it down somewhere on Canal street-either on theCustom-House or over the Artesian wslil
