NAXOS BLU-RAY AUDIO ORCHESTRAL NBD0010 | 730099001069DVOK Symphonies Nos 7 & 8 Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Marin Alsop, conductor

In these recordings from Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore, Dvoks most darkly dramatic and passionate symphony, the Seventh, is coupled with his Eighth, notable for its dramatic contrasts, Bohemian lyricism, and a seemingly spontaneous flow of thematic ideas. Alsops Baltimore orchestra parades a refined tonal profile that pays its own special dividendsAlsop should please both the eager newcomerand the seasoned collector. Therell be no disappointment on either score. (Gramophone) This splendidly recorded performance stands very high among available recordingswith Alsop both infectious and persuasively symphonic. (BBC Music Magazine). Also available on CD (8.572112).

NAXOS BLU-RAY AUDIO ORCHESTRAL NBD0014 | 730099001465 DVOK Symphonies Nos 6 & 9Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Marin Alsop, conductor

Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra here present his Symphony No. 6, which pays tribute both to Dvoks mentor Brahms and to the rich folk music of his Bohemian homeland. The most popular of all Dvoks works, Symphony No. 9 From the New World, makes an immediate appeal by virtue of a seemingly inexhaustible flow of melody and sparkling orchestration. New orchestra, New World, and a terrific reading of a firm favourite (Gramophone on Dvoks Symphony No. 9) 4 STARS (The Sunday Times on Dvoks Symphony No. 9). Dvoks Symphony No. 6 is also available on CD (8.570995) and Dvoks Symphony No. 9 is also available on CD (8.570714)

Marin Alsop has been Music Director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 2007, a relationship now extended to 2015. Currently Conductor Emeritus of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Laureate of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, since 1992 she has also been Music Director of Californias prize-winning Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music. In addition to engagements with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Zrich Tonhalle, Orchestre de Paris, Munich Philharmonic and La Scala Milan, she performs each season with both the London Symphony Orchestra and the London Philharmonic and in 200910 was Artistic Director of The Bernstein Project, at Londons Southbank Centre.

As one of Bernsteins last students, Alsop has tirelessly evangelized for this workwith her fine Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, which to my mind shows the greater understanding of its myriad styles and undergoes the more convincing and coherent dramatic arc [than other recordings]. And she is also blessed with a riveting performer in the central role of the Celebrant the aptly named Jubilant Sykes. He throws himself into the performance heart, soul and throatso we finally have a worthy successor to Bernsteins own recording. James Irvine, Editor, Gramophone

NAXOS ORCHESTRAL 8.572227 | 747313222773SIBELIUS Symphonies Nos 4 & 5New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Pietari Inkinen, conductor

On this second volume of Sibelius Symphonies (Nos. 1 and 3 are available on Naxos 8.572305), the acclaimed young Finnish conductor Pietari Inkinen interprets two of his compatriots most contrasting symphonies. The Symphony No. 4 is a work of ominous brooding and bleak desolation, reflecting the Sibeliuss psychological state at the time of its composition. Sibelius commented of his much-revised and expansively heroic Symphony No. 5 It is as if God the Father had thrown down mosaic pieces from heavens floor and asked me to put them back as they were.

Also available:SIBELIUS Night Ride and Sunrise, Belshazzars Feast Suite, Kuolema (8.570763)SIBELIUS Scenes historiques I & II, King Christian II Suite (8.570068)

Pietari Inkinen, now working internationally at the highest level, was appointed Music Director of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in 2008. He has won unanimous praise from audiences and critics both for his performances on tour in New Zealand and for his recordings with the orchestra on Naxos. He was also invited in 2009 to become Principal Guest Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra. As guest conductor, he has already worked with major orchestras throughout Europe, including the Leipzig Gewandhaus, La Scala Philharmonic, BBC Symphony Orchestra and Dresden Staatskapelle and opera-houses including the Bayerische Staatsoper, and enjoys successful collaborations with leading soloists.

This recording is a musical road trip from the creative world of Michael Daugherty, one of Americas unique and most performed composers, and the visionary conductor Marin Alsop, who has championed his music for over 20 years. Our drive begins with Route 66, a high-octane nostalgic drive from Illinois to California through Main Street America, as seen through Daughertys rear view mirror. Along the way, we stop at Ghost Ranch, where Georgia OKeeffe created her brilliant paintings inspired by the open skies and bone-parched earth of New Mexico. Arriving in Los Angeles, Daugherty takes us for a tuneful spin down Sunset Boulevard where anything can happen, and it usually does. Our journey concludes as we travel into the 4th dimension with Time Machine, a wild exploration of sound for three conductors and orchestra.

NAXOS CONCERTO 8.570462 | 747313046270LYAPUNOV Violin Concerto, Symphony No 1 Maxim Fedotov, violin Russian Philharmonic Orchestra Dmitry Yablonsky, conductor

Sergei Mikhailovich Lyapunov belonged to the second generation of Russian nationalist composers who were professionally trained and strongly influenced by Balakirev and his associates. His Violin Concerto has a gorgeous solo part, big tunes, high energy, emotional Russian-romantic sweep, and a simply terrific cadenza Maxim Fedotov sounds like he is having the time of his life (MusicWeb International). The first of Lyapunovs two symphonies is a grand essay in the late Russian
