About Your Met Lab 1020

LikeallMesaprimarystandards,theMetLab1020isapositivedisplacementprimarypistonproverforgasflow measurementsineitherpressureorsuctionapplications.UsingpatentedProvenDryCal®Technology,itcombines theaccuracyofaprimarycalibratorwithunequaledspeedandconvenience,providinggasflowmeasurementsatthepush of a button.

Bynature,yourMetLab1020performsaprimarymeasurementofvolumetricflow.However,sincepressurevariationswithinanymeasurementsystemcancauseambiguousresults,theMetLab1020isgenerallyusedinastandardizedmode,automaticallyconvertingitsvolumetricflowmeasurementstotheflowthatwouldexistunderstandard temperature and pressure conditions.

Anexcellenttoolforthecalibrationofinstrumentsthatreadinmassflow,yourMetLab1020measuresflowfrom 5LPM(LitersPerMinute)to500LPMwithinanaccuracyof±0.25%ofreadingstandardized,usingatemperature sensorandpressuretransducerwithinthegasflowstream.Additionally,youcaneasilycalibratevolumetric instruments(seeSetup–Readings).Flowmeasurementscanbetakenmanually(onereadingatatime),or automaticallyinthecontinuousmode,withupto100measurementsinanaveragingsequence.

TheMetLab1020weighs90lbs/41kilograms.Unpackingbytwopeopleisrecommended.TheMetLab1020canbeliftedfromtheshippingcontainerbyverifyingthenutsonthelargeinletandoutletfittingsaretightandliftingthe MetLab1020bygraspingthesefittings.WhileliftingtheMetLab1020fromtheshippingcontainer,thetopofthe Met Lab 1020 should be supported to prevent tipping.

Your Met Lab 1020 comes with the following:

Warnings•TheMetLab1020isnotintrinsically-safeandisnotforusewithexplosiveorflammablegases,orforuseinexplo-siveenvironments.IfyouchoosetocalibrateexplosiveorflammablegaseswithyourMetLab1020,pleasefollowyourorganization’slaboratorysafetyprocedures,whichtypicallyrequireoperationwithinaninertatmosphere.Toenableuseinaninertatmosphere,yourMetLab1020hastwo(2)¼”gasPurgefittings,locatedonitsrightside,anditselectronicsareisolatedfromthegasflowstream,containedwithinaninternal,partitionedcompartment.

•TheMetLab1020isnotdesignedtobepressurizedabove20psiA(1379mbarA)orforgasflowsabove500Lpm. Operating Your Met Lab 1020

ConnectionsYourMetLab1020shouldbeplacedonasteady,secureworksurface.Foroptimumstability,theMetLab1020hasself adjusting feet at its base.

LocateboththeInlet(pressure)andOutlet(suction)fittings(seeFigure1)andremovetheirprotectivecaps.

MaintainonlyminimumamountoftubingnecessarybetweenyourML-1020andtheflowsource.Aswithanyprimarystandard,themoreinternal(“dead”)volumebetweenyourML-1020andtheflowrestrictor(MFC,needlevalve,orsonicnozzle),themoreuncertainty(error)isaddedtothecalibrationprocess.

You’renowreadytomakethefollowingconnections(asneeded),usingFigures1and2asreference.

PowerPlugyourACpoweradapter(supplied)intoanACwalloutlet,andattachitsDCoutputcordtoyourML-1020’srearDCPower12VDC,3Aconnection.

Valve Actuation Air SourceYourML-1020’sinternalvalveactuatesbyairpressure,andmustbeconnectedtoafilteredoilfreeairsourceofatleast80psi(5516mbar)andnohigherthan100psi(6895mbar).Usingtubing(notsupplied)andthe1/4”(6.35mm)SwagelokValveActuationFittingontherearoftheunit,connectyourlaboratoryairtoyourML-1020.Turnontheairsource,andverifythatthepressureisbetween80and100psi(5516and6895mbar)(pressuregaugenotsupplied).

Inlet (Pressure) and Outlet (Suction) FittingsWhenusingapressureflowsource,connectthegasflowtothe1.5”(38.1mm)Swagelok®fitting labeled Inlet – Pressure. Whenusingasuctionflowsource,connectthegasflowtothe1.5”(38.1mm)Swagelok®fitting labeled Outlet – Suction.

YourML-1020’sinternalpressuretransducerisratedat20psig(1378mbarg)maximum,or5.3psi(365mbar)morethantypicalambientpressure.Whentakingstandardizedflowmeasurements,werecommendthatanytubing orexhaustsystemconnectedtoyourML-1020’soutletfittinghaveamaximumpressuredropof3psi(207mbar).

Whentakingvolumetricflowmeasurements,thereshouldbenosignificantpressuredifference(suchasthepressuredropofrestrictivetubingorfilters)betweenyourML-1020andthepointintheflowstreamthatisofinterest(i.e.,atitsinletoroutletfitting).Ifthereisasignificantpressuredifference,therewillalsobeacorrespondingvolumetricflowdifference(fromtheIdealGasLaw).Inthatcase,yourML-1020’sindicatedvolumetricflowshouldbeadjustedbyafactoroftheabsolutepressureatyourML-1020,dividedbytheabsolutepressureatthepointofinterest.

Overpressure ExhaustWhenyourML-1020completesaflowmeasurement,itsinternalvalveopens,releasingthegasfromtheflowcellandenablingthepistontodroptothebottom(reset).Ifforanyreasonthevalvedoesn’topen,thepistonwillmovetothetopoftheflowcellandasafetyswitchwillautomaticallyresettheML-1020.Ifforanyreasonthevalvedoesn’topen,thepistonwillremainatthetopoftheflowcellandpressurewillbuild.Topreventover-pressurizationoftheflowcell,yourML-1020’shasanoverpressuresensorthatwillresettheunit.AdditionallytheML-1020hasamechani-calpressurereliefvalvethatexhauststhegasifoverpressurizationoccursthrougha½”Swagelok®fitting(Over-pressureexhaust).Ifthisfittingiscurrentlyopentoambientandyoudon’twantthegastoventtoatmosphere,youshouldconnectadirectlinefromthisfittingtoyourexhaustsystem;or,ifyourML-1020isalreadydirectlyconnectedtoyourexhaustsystem,youcan“tee”alinefromtheOverpressureExhaustfittingtoyourexhaustline.

Purge FittingsYourML-1020isnotintrinsically-safeforusewithexplosiveorflammablegases(seeAboutYourML-1020–Warn-ings).IfyouchoosetocalibrateexplosiveorflammablegaseswithyourML-1020,pleasefollowyour organization’slaboratorysafetyprocedures,whichtypicallyrequireoperationwithinaninertatmosphere.Toenableuseinaninertatmosphere,yourML-1020hastwo(2)¼”(6.25mm)gasPurgefittings,locatedonitsrightside,anditselectronicsareisolatedfromthegasflowstream,containedwithinaninternal,partitionedcompartment.

PleasenotethatelectriccurrentisstillpresentwithinyourML-1020’sgasflowstream,atthepressuresensorandtemperature transducer.

Getting StartedToturnonyourML-1020,presstheOn/Offbuttoninthelowerrightcornerofthecontrolpanelforonesecond. Toturnitoff,pressandholdtheOn/Offbuttonforthreeseconds.

Whenturnedon,yourML-1020’sLCDdisplaysanopeningscreenindicatingtheproductname,modelnumberandflowrange,anditscoolingfanwillturnon.

Navigating through your ML-1020’s menu screens is easy and intuitive – simply use the four directional arrows on the controlpanelfortogglingbetweenmenuoptions(right,left,up,down).Yourlocationwithineachmenuormenuitemishighlighted(shaded).Amenuiteminanglebrackets(<>)indicatesthatmultipleoptionsexistforthatitem;theseoptionsaredisplayedwhenthatitemisselected.Toselecthighlightedorbracketeditems,pressENTERatthecenterof the navigational display on the control panel.

Whenyou’reready,visittheSETUPmenuandtakesometimetoexploreyourML-1020’smanyuser-definablesettings(see Setup).

Customizing Your CalibrationYourML-1020’scalibrationsmaybecustomizedandautomatedforyourconvenience.Tocustomizeeachoption,movebetweenmenuselectionsusingtheupanddownarrows.Whenaselectionishighlighted,usetherightandleftar-rowstotogglebetweenyourchoicesforthatselection.PressCONFIRMtosaveanychangesandreturntoSETUP, or press EXIT to return to SETUP without saving any changes.

SetupFromtheinitialscreen,choosingSETUPgivesyouaccesstomanycustomizableoptions.Ifatanytimeyou’dliketoreturnyourML-1020toitsfactorydefaultsettings,navigatetoPreferences,setDefaultSettingsto“Yes”andthenConfirmthechanges.Ineachsetupsub-menu,selectingCONFIRMappliesthesettingsandreturnstothemainsetupmenu. Selecting EXIT returns to the main menu retaining the settings as they were originally.

READINGS. SelectVolumetricfloworStandardizedflow(volumetricflowcorrectedtospecifiedtemperatureand pressureconditions,forcalibratinginstrumentsthatreadinmassflow,suchasMFCs).Chooseyourpreferred numberofmeasurementsintheaverage,from1to100.Ifyou’dlikeadelaybetweenflowmeasurements(i.e.,in ordertotime-profileMFCstoverifytheirlong-termperformance),setthe“TimeBetween”from1to60minutes. Asapplicable,changetheSensorFactorfromitsdefaultvalueof1.000tothevalueprovidedbytheMFCorMFMmanufacturer (see Using Sensor Factors).

UNITS.Dependingonwhetheryou’veselectedVolumetricorStandardizedflowintheReadingsmenu,youmayviewflowmeasurementsinlitersorcubicfeet(allunitsareperminute).ChoosetoviewpressureinmmHg,kPaorpsi, andchoosetoviewtemperatureinCelsiusorFahrenheit.Ifyou’remeasuringstandardizedflow,enterthe temperaturetowhichthegasflowvolumewillbestandardizeddependingontheapplication.Pressure standardizationisnotadjustable,andisalways101.325kPa,760mmhg,or14.696PSIofabsolutepressure.

TIME. Set the current time in the format you prefer.

DATE. Setthemonth/date/yearintheformatyouprefer.

PREFERENCES. ReadDefaultoffersachoiceofSingle,ContinuousorBurstmeasurements;choosethetypeofflowmeasurementyouwillnormallyuse.Onceselected,yourML-1020alwaysdefaultstothissettingwhenMeasureisse-lected.DefaultSettingsallowsyoutoresetyourML-1020tothefactorydefaults.Magnificationcontrolstheamountofdataonthedisplay;chooseZoomtoviewonlyflowmeasurementsinlargerfont,orchooseDetailtosimultaneouslyviewflowmeasurements,temperatureconditions,pressureconditions,andsensorfactorinsmallerfont.

ABOUT. TellsyoumoreaboutyourML-1020,ausefulscreentorefertowhenspeakingwithatechnicalsupportrepre-sentative or your Mesa sales representative.

Taking MeasurementsOnceyou’vefinishedcustomizingyourML-1020’sSETUPandhaveconfirmedyourchanges,selectMEASUREtobeginasetofmeasurements.MEASUREgivesyouaccesstothemainmenu,whereyoucanchoosebetweenthefollowingflowmeasurementoptions:

•Single.Eachtimethe“Enter”buttonispressed,onemeasurementistaken.

•Cont.Whenthe“Enter”buttonispressed,measurementscontinueautomaticallyuntilstoppedbytheuser.

• Burst. A single series of measurements is taken until the number of readings in the average is met.

Totakeaflowmeasurement,selectthetypeofflowmeasurementyouwant,andthenpressENTER.YourML-1020willbegintalkingflowmeasurements.Whentakingflowmeasurements,thepreviousmeasurement,therunningaverageofallmeasurementsandthenumberofmeasurementsintheaverageareprovidedsimultaneously.Theflow-cellviewingwindowlightseachtimethepistonrises,andyouwillheartheinternalvalveclickingopenandclosedatthebeginningandendofeachflowmeasurement.

YoucanstopflowmeasurementsatanytimebychoosingeitherPAUSEorRESET.PAUSEterminatestheflowmea-surementbutleavestheflowresultsonthescreenandreturnstothemeasurementmenu.ThesetofmeasurementsmayberesumedwheretheywerestoppedbyselectingSINGLE,CONT.,orBURST.Youmayswitchbetweencontinu-ous and burst modes at will but once single readings are selected RESET must be selected once or twice to return to themeasurementmenutochoosecontinuousorburstmodes.RESETclearsthescreen,resetstheaveragecounterto0,andreturnstothemeasurementmenu.

Fromthemeasurementmenu,selectingEXITreturnsthemainmenu.ChoosingSETUPinthemainmenuallowsyouto further customize your ML-1020’s operation.

Using Sensor FactorsYourML-1020isfactory-calibratedwithnitrogenorpurifiedlaboratoryair,althoughyoucanrunothergases,providedtheyarenoncorrosive,noncondensingandnoncombustible(likemostprimarystandards,yourML-1020isnotintrinsi-cally-safe).

When calibrating an MFC or MFM using a surrogate or proxy gas (meaning the MFC or MFM was originally calibrated bythemanufacturerforagasotherthanwhatyouarecurrentlyusing),refertothemanufacturer’ssensorfactor.

ToenableyourML-1020toscaleitsactualflowmeasurementstomatchtheadjustedflowfromtheMFCorMFM,input the sensor factor into the ML-1020 before calibrating the MFC or MFM (see SETUP – Readings).

BecauseasensorfactorotherthanyourML-1020’sdefaultvalueof1.000modifiestheactualflowtoa“reported”flow,anexclamationmark(!)willappearnexttoanyML-1020measurementthatisbeingadjustedaccordingtoasensorfactorwhenyourdisplayissettoZoom(seeSETUP,Preferences,Magnification).IfyourdisplayissettoDe-tail,thennoexclamationpointappears.Rather,thesensorfactor(SF)willbedisplayed,alongwithitsvalueonthe measurementsscreenalongwiththeindividualflowmeasurements.

Out of Range!IfyourDeviceUnderTestisgeneratingmoreflowthanyourML-1020’sratedflowrangeof500litersperminute,the“OutofRange!”warningappearswhenyouattempttotakeaflowmeasurement.Immediatelylowerordisconnecttheflowsource.Whentheflowiswithintheproperrange,eitherchoose“Reset”fromtheLCDdisplaytoclearthelastmeasurement,ortrytotakeanotherflowmeasurement.

YoumayverifyyourML-1020’sflowrangebynavigatingtoSETUP,thenAbout.

Over Pressure!IfyourML-1020hasaninternalpressurethatisgreaterthan19.5psiA(134.4kpaA,1008mmHgA),the “OverPressure!”warningappears.Thiscanoccurbeforeorduringaflowmeasurement.IftheML-1020isin theprocessoftakingaflowmeasurement,theunitwillopenthevalve;thepistonwillreset,anddisplaythe “OverPressure!”warning.Youwillneedtodeterminethesourceoftheoverpressure.Thisismostlikelycausedby arestrictionintheflowpath.Itcanalsobecausedbyafaultysensorallowingthepistontogotothetopwithout resetting.Whenthesourceoftherestrictioniscleared,pressinganykeywillclearthefault.

ProgramTherecessedProgrambutton,locatedontherearofyourML-1020,enablesfirmwareupdates.ToupdateyourML-1020’sfirmware(availablefromourwebsitewww.drycal.com),connectyourserialcable(supplied)toyourML-1020’sRS-232serialportandtotheserialportofyourPC,thenholdtheProgrambuttondownwhilepushingtherecessedResetbutton,alsoontherearofyourML-1020.

Reset FunctionIfyourML-1020failstorespondtopush-buttoncommands,tryresettingtheunitbypressingtheresetbutton on the back. This can be done easily with a bent paper clip. Please note that resetting your ML-1020 will not affectyourusersettings.However,ifyouareinthemiddleofacalibration,yourML-1020willreturntotheinitialmeasurementphaseandyou’llneedtoinitiateanewflowmeasurement.

Annual Maintenance and Calibration
