he Pontiac G8 has been given a stay ofexecution — well, from Holden Australia atleast.Pontiac may be gone, thanks to the restructur-

ing of General Motors in North America, but thememory of the famous car brand will live on for alittle while yet — on the other side of the world.Holden introduced a special edition of its high

performance SS-V sedan, which came with the twin-vent bonnet and sportier G8 front bumper andgrille.The limited run of Commodores has proved so

popular that Holden has decided to continuebuilding them indefinitely, according to a recentbriefing to dealers.Although the vehicles are no longer ‘limited’

they are still expected to become collector pieces.Even though the limited edition SS-V models did

not wear Pontiac badges, some dealers have begunordering the Pontiac and G8 badges for customers.A ute version of the Pontiac G8 was due to follow

later this year, but it was sidelined along with therest of the Pontiac brand.To boost local production Holden is now trying

to resurrect an export deal by selling the Caprice asa police car to North America from 2011.

Ford’s CEO has given the strongest indication yetthat the all-Australian Falcon could be deadwithin five years.Speaking at the North American International

Auto Show in Detroit, Alan Mulally said his companywas committed to its ‘ONE Ford’ strategy, whichallows for just one global large car platform.‘‘People who make one vehicle for one country —

a different vehicle — those days are gone becauseyou can’t compete with the global companies, andFord’s going to be a powerhouse globally,’’ Mr Mulallysaid, confirming that a new Falcon exclusively for theAustralian market was out of the question.He reassured that Australia was not simply being

left out in the cold, but insisted that developing aglobal platform was a far more viable option for thefuture of the company.Mr Mulally confirmed the most likely replacement

for the Falcon would be the American-made FordTaurus, a front-wheel drive vehicle similar in size andperformance.But he said another option could be that Ford

Australia would help develop the rear-wheel driveplatform for Mustang muscle car, which could formthe base of a new Falcon, continuing an Australianmanufacturing tradition of more than 50 years.

IF you’ve ever heard your kids saying ‘are we there yet’ — spare athought for Argentinian couple Candelaria and Herman Zapp who areinto their ninth year travelling the world in their 1928 Graham Paige —with four youngsters in tow.The couple called into the Kumeu Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival ontheir New Zealand leg — unfortunately DriveBy wasn’t able to talk to thefamily but their car and literature was still creating heaps of interest.The Zapp’s original journey was travelling from Argentina to Alaska.The proposed six-month trip stretched into three years and sevenmonths. Mazda crossover even betterBY DEAN TAYLOR

T he Mazda CX-7crossover has alwaysbeen a great drive -

and now its even betterthanks to some subtlechanges.

Driving the new modelfrom Wilksbrooke Motorsreminded me that using aproven car platform, in thiscase the Mazda6, is a greatway to start a crossovervehicle designed mainly forroad use.

The new looks are basedon the Mazda family look,with the an aggressive five-point grille and bumperdesign, restyled side intakeswith newly designed foglamps.

Also new are the frontand rear cylindrical lampdesigns and bigger 19-inchalloy wheels which comewith lower-profile 235/55R19 tyres. At the rear thereis a roof spoiler with inte-grated high-mount brakelights.

Motive power comesfrom the proven 2.3-litreDirect Injection SparkIgnition (DISI) turbo engineand six-speed Activematicconfiguration. The enginedevelops 175kW of powerand 350Nm of torque.

Some tweaks to the

gearbox and weightreductions bring the officialfuel usage down to11.4litres/100km.

Like the new Mazda3,the CX-7 adopts the newtop-mounted Multi Informa-tion Display (MID) whichprovides the driver with arange of information onaudio, fuel consumption,safety alerts and even main-

tenance reminders. Foradded safety, the MultiInformation Display alsoincorporates the monitor forthe standard reversingcamera.

The CX-7’s active safetypackage includes six airbags,Dynamic Stability Control(DSC), traction control, ABSbrakes with ElectronicBrake-force Distribution(EBD) and Emergency BrakeAssist (EBA).

In two week’s time TR sports cars from the Northand South Islands (and an international visitoror two) will be travelling to Waikato for the 2010

TR Register Nationals.The event is expected to attract about 60 cars,

and these will be seen around the region asparticipants take part in a variety of events.The national event has been organised by

Pokuru couple Cazna and Steve Payne, who will bedriving their own 1954 Longdoor TR2 and 1969 TR6.They have owned the two cars collectively for over60 years.Best static view will be at the Concours at the

Waitomo Domain on the morning of Friday,February 26.Cars will be judged in four classes (Standard,

Modified, Masters and Pride of Ownership), beforeheading off on a scenic run.On Saturday the cars and crews will be

travelling South over scenic country back roads,including stops at places of interest along the way,and the day will conclude with a Kiwiana-themedevening function at Waitomo.Locals best chance to see the iconic British

sports cars is on Sunday when they come to TeAwamutu to visit a private car collection and takepart in a Musical Mystery Tour around TeAwamutu, ending at a local Vineyard for a farewelllunch and prize giving.

Drivers and passengers have to spend sometime at the Rose Gardens as part of the MagicalMystery Tour so cars will be parked in the vicinitythat morning.The TR Register New Zealand has been firmly

established since 1976. Becoming an IncorporatedSociety in 1985 brought an affiliation with thegoverning body of motorsport in New Zealand,MotorSport New Zealand.The TR Register maintains a stable membership

of around 200 enthusiasts throughout NewZealand.Membership is open to all owners of Triumph

TR marque cars.The very first Triumph car was sold in 1923, and

sporting versions followed almost at once.TR owners say the best way to get

any MG car enthusiast reallyannoyed is to remind them ofthat.Although it was the

MG, which took much ofthe glory in pre-war(WW2) years, it wasindeed the Triumph, whichwas born first.Ownership changes, sev-

eral in fact, did not seem tohave any effect on the pedigree

of its cars. Until 1939 they were proudly independ-ent. Financial problems then threw them into newhands during World War Two.Standard bought Triumph in 1945, were

themselves taken over by Leyland in 1961, and thenbecame just one part of the British Leyland Empirein 1968. A steady process of rationalisation wenton well into the 1980’s.The sports cars from Triumph were built in only

two distinct strains — those built to 1939, oftendevelopments of middle-class saloons for whichTriumph were noted, and those built since 1945 atCoventry, which in every case except the styling ofthe last TR7/8 models, have been completelyconceived by Standard.

Triumph also had a strongcompetitive motor sportdepartment, which oper-ated in rallying andracing from the early1950’s to the 1980’s,and many works carsand developments ofthese models ben-efited production carsdirectly. The silverwarewon through the yearshas been quite substan-tial.

returned to the Mitsubishi stablewith an all-new model offering
