Reading Proficiency

• Proficiency of all students in 2007 ranged from a high of 58.8% in 5th grade to a low of 36.9% in 6th grade.

• Increase in performance in grades 4, 5, and 8. Decrease in performance in grades 3 and 6, and marked decrease in grade 11.

• Lowest proficiency among students transitioning from elementary to middle school and middle school to high school.

• Intermittent increases and decreases in most grades for African Americans. Steady decreases in grade 11. Large increase in 5th grade.

• Proficiency of Economically Disadvantaged Students increased in grades 4, 5, and 8, with the largest gain in grade 8.

• Proficiency is low for Students with Disabilities. Fourth graders made steady gains. Eleventh graders had smaller decrease than other groups.
