Are you Reaping the Benefits of Your Hard Work?

When my sales organization announced that the training focus for 2012 was going to be “Access and Control” I wasn’t moved either way. And then it happened! An Open Enrollment that I was sure was going result in at least an 80% penetration was a huge bust. I never worked so hard to get three (3) employees to sign up. I drove away grateful that I was able to make the group, and absolutely bewildered as to what happened. Where did I go wrong? What had I failed to say or do?

I mentally reviewed my presentation to the business owner and realized I had failed to lock his attention on me during my initial presentation. He was taking calls, answering questions for his assistant, focusing on everything but me and my presentation. I had failed to take control of the situation. I had failed to get approval to have access to all of his employees. What’s really sad is that I am sure that one of the 17 employees that I did not get to see is

the one that will really need the insurance coverage prior to the Open Enrollment next year.

Needless to say I have re-visited my approach. I now do everything in my control to ensure that I have the undivided attention of the business owner during my presentation. I have even gone as far as suggesting an alternative meeting when the owner would be more able to focus on my presentation. It’s surprising how attentive the business owner becomes after such an offer. Once I have thoroughly presented to an attentive busi-ness owner, he is much more likely to ensure that I have positive enrollment conditions, i.e., that I have access to all of the company’s employees. I am pleased to report that since adopting an “Access and Control” attitude I have witnessed a marked improvement in penetration of my groups. 2012 is now off to a great start!

NMRGAHU Awards Update

Page 4

New Mexico Rio Grande Association of Health Underwriters

During this past year, time was spent in informing you, the member, through monthly newslet-ters about the various awards that can be earned by chapters and/or individuals through this term year. You may have witnessed first hand what your association is doing to bring real value as members of the New Mexico Rio Grande Association of Health Underwriters by attending breakfast meetings and special events. Some awards reviewed in the Association monthly news-letters during this past year: LPRT (Leading Producers Round Table), the President’s Triple Crown Program, NAHU Emerging Leader Award, Distinguished Service Award, and the Land-mark Award. As an active and participating member, you may have already qualified for some of these awards. NAHU encourages chapters and members to strive for outstanding achievement and each year recognize exceptional chapters and individual members for excelling in education, advocacy and professionalism.

The Awards committee and Association leadership is working feverishly to meet the deadline of April 5, 2012 to submit Awards applications so our association and it’s members can receive special recognition at the National Association Health Underwriters Convention in June. This would not be possible without your loyal support each month. It takes a team effort to be where we are today. You might ask yourself, “how can I make a difference as a member?” Become an active member recruiter, a chapter volunteer, or a raving fan of the NMRGAHU.

Happy Spring! I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting our Profes-sional Development events. We have had successful events in both February and March. Both events were very educational and enjoyed by all based on the feedback. Our March CE was a wine tasting event and the venue, wine and food was great! A big thank you goes out to Kay Knutson for organizing this event. We are busy planning our upcoming events for April and May. Stephanie C. Croquez with Assist America will be coming in from Pennsylvania to do a three hour CE on Global Emergency Service on April 20th. Then on May 18th will be our annual Symposium which will be held at Sandia Casino and Resort. It will be an all day event and seven CE credits will be available which will include one hour of Ethics. Anne Sperling is also working on confirming some distinguished speakers who will be on the agenda at no charge. The date is May 18th from 8 am to 5 pm so please mark your calendars! Once again I need to thank my Co-Chair Lametria Davis who works very hard on every event and is a great negotiator. These events would not be possible without her assistance. I also want to thank all of the members and non-members who assist with these events. I need to mention the Lovelace Underwriting Team (non-members) who have consistently assisted with every event: Peggy Reb-bert, Chris Musiet, Lorena Vigil, Joseph Tafoya, Amanda Rubio and Robert Romero. As you can see it takes a lot of hands to make these events happen! If you have any suggestions as to topics or speakers that you would like us to pur-sue, please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or 505-727-5278.
