Barbara Groh CHUM Volunteers You will find Barbara Groh at the 9:40am service if you don’t find her in the basement in the Children’s area. When one of her grandchildren (Ellie or Addie Groh) are the acolytes you will find her in the 11:00am service. She wouldn’t miss them lighting candles for that service! Barb has been attending CHUM for about 12 years - she thinks! Before her retirement, Barb was an elementary classroom teacher and also a Special Education classroom teacher. We appreciate Barbara volunteering many hours in the past years teaching the 3-4 year old Sunday School class. Well there are many things we don’t know about Barb. She is WILD about gooseberry pie and walking in the rain! She enjoys attending Tuesdays on the Terrace during the summers at Botanica. She was a tennis star in “her day”. Quite the woman! Something else you may not be aware of is that she spent several years as a sponsor for child abuse prevention and was on the Kansas State Board for Prevention of Child Abuse. Thanks Barbara for all you do for CHUM kids and for Kansas kids!

AGAPE, Rm. 201 - Welcome to Alisa, officially, to the CHUM family! Hope

everyone had a Happy Mother's Day. We had another small group this week to

discuss Tex's mother's response to the treatment of a homosexual in their small

town. We will not be having class on May 25th or June 29th due to the 10 am

combined service on those Sunday's. Happy birthday this week to Gary Hawley,

Shelly Petty and Haley Shelton. Knopp's treat next week.

ARCHITECTS, Rm. B1 – Thanks to Lilaha for conducting business and

especially for the way she decorates our room. She makes it warm & beautiful

for us. Thanks LaVerne for taking notes last Sunday. I’m told Lilaha gave a

unique lesson that all got to join in on. Game Day is the 15th and Mission Sunday

is the 25th. Happy Birthday to Marjorie Spurrier on 5/12. The Leightons will

celebrate their 63rd Anniversary on 5/13. Happy Mother’s Day to all. Thanks

Enid for giving the lesson on Amos - who gave the people the Judgment due

them. Our discussion was rewarding for all. Prayers to all our ill & shutins,

especially to Cliff and Margaret.

BUILDERS, Rm. 305 - We continued in Chapter 5 and into Chapter 6.

COMMUNICATORS, Rm. 301 - Thanks John B for leading our lesson on

“Community” and what it means to us. Calendars: June 26, Wingnuts ball game;

July 26-27 Topeka trip. Prayers continue for Debbie and Bart Wilson, also for

Steve Hensiek's family.

CONTEMPORARY STUDIES, Rm. B5/7 - Mother's Day celebrated by a

class of 30 including Tracy Harrison's mother, and Carl and Mary Lou Martin's

son. Birthday wishes were extended to Pam Blanchard and John Valusek. The

lesson focused on a metaphorical understanding of the Creeds and the Trinity, as

well as the Lord's Supper. Table conversation considered how people felt about

reciting the creeds. Sunday, we conclude our consideration of Borg's Speaking

Christian by discussing the last two chapters: the Lord's Prayer, and Conclusion.

DOUBLE CIRCLE, Rm. B4 - Bill Means gave thanks for his and Meredith’s

mothers - very nice. Robin Bartley played the piano for us. Tom had Mother’s

Day devotions. Attendance 12. No class on May 25th since there will only be

one service at 10:00am in Fellowship Hall. Betty wasn’t feeling well so she stayed

home.

TRAVELING COMPANIONS, Chapel @ 11:00am - Join us for discussion on

spiritual development and personal growth. VICEROY, Rm. B3 - Sunday we’ll watch the PBS video “A Prince Among

Slaves,” the true story of an African prince sold into slave trade to Mississippi

before eventual recognition by the President. Seven generations later, his grandson

was a guest at College Hill.

chief of education and training until 2009 when he retired to attend seminary. He received his M.Div. degree in 2012 from Virginia Theological Seminary and they then moved to Wichita for his call as Assistant Rector at St. James Episcopal Church. David has a great tenor voice and sang with the Kansas City Chorale for many years. In Kansas City Debbie was active in the American Guild of Organists and the alumnae chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota, an international music fraternity for women. She has been fortunate that Wichita also has active groups for both of these organizations where she’s made many new friends. On Tuesdays, she volunteers at Episcopal Social Services downtown where they prepare and serve lunch to the homeless. On Mondays, David’s day off, you will find them out and about on the back roads of Kansas exploring small towns and other attractions within a 150-mile radius of Wichita. They also enjoy going to movies and taking walks with their springer spaniel, Toby. Welcome to CHUM Debbie!
