2 The King’s Banner

On Sunday, Sep-tember 25, 25 new members were welcomed into the mission of Christ the King Luther-an Church. They ranged in age from 2 to 102. About half would be identified by sociologists as

millennials or Gen Xers. The group was well-mixed with older families, young families, single and married. Get to know these wonderful people on page 14 in this edition of The Banner. They bring much strength to God’s mission through Christ the King Church!

But why do I mention here the “demographics”? I start with the stats because they—we at Christ the King Church!—are making a point. Indeed, with wry reference to Bach, they and we are making a counter-point not just in our favored music.

Consider these other stats. I will talk a lot about them in the upcoming three adult forums on Sunday mornings when I present on “The Emergent Church.” In 1990 6 percent of US adults identified themselves as religiously unaffiliated. These were the nucleus of the growing cell of “nones,” those who checked “none” on surveys of religious affiliation. Their number held around 14 percent from 1998 to 2004. Today, they number 25 percent of the US adult population and they are mostly under the age of 50. This new survey, jointly con-ducted by the Public Religion Research Institute and Religion News Service, also observes that the increase in religiously unaffiliated people began with young adults in the 90s and has accelerated since.

There are now more “Nones” than Roman Catholics in America. There are more Nones than American Protestants. For now, however, the people who identify as Christian is greater than those who identify as Nones. And all sectors of American Christianity are experiencing loss. All.

Why is this happening? 60 percent of the Nones now say they have “stopped believing” in the teachings of their traditions. About half of them came from families that were not very religious. The other half left because of “negative religious teachings” about LGBTQ persons and partisan politics from the pulpit (conservative and liberal, but mostly conservative). There are many more significant stats I will share later. To summarize now, the trend looks to be permanent. To quote a current important book title, “The Nones Are Alright.” They are happy with their choices and look to be staying that way. And the church of the future will have to ask not what it can do to “bring them back.” It will have to ask itself how it will be church without them.

I do not know that our robust welcome of new members is a trend. I do know that some who were previously Nones

are seeing something to ally with here. I do know that any declaration of membership in a church today is a counter-point to popular culture. We are serious about our ministry of serving all people here and from here at CTK. One does not need to be a “member” to receive God’s love from God’s people here. One does not need to be a member to partici-pate in any activity here. One does not need to “check off” a doctrinal list of beliefs to be here. One does not need to be a member to give generously of one’s talents and financial support. One does not need to be a member to give gener-ously of God’s love in gratitude for all that God does so gen-erously for us. But God does need us and re-members most surprising people like us to be Christ’s body, Christ’s church, Christ’s ministry in this world.

What then does being a member—one who self-identifies as “religiously affiliated”—mean? Being a member of God’s mission through Christ the King Church means that the member publicly identifies with and serves God’s mission through the ministries of this faith community. Being a member means that the member commits to and desires to worship regularly, pray, learn, serve neighbor and world, sup-port financially the congregation’s ministry, and even enjoy playfully the community God gives us.

We thank God for the witness made by the 25 new members welcomed on the 25th. The next time we receive new mem-bers will, in fact, be a time when all who have been members of Christ the King will have the opportunity to reaffirm their membership. The Christ the King Festival party this coming November 18 will carry the theme of “Salt and Light” as we celebrate our call to be the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world.” (Matt. 5:13-14). Christ the King Sunday, November 20, itself will be a rededication Sunday.

On that festival day we look for every member to be in wor-ship. We invite every member then to help “turn the page” toward Christ the King’s next chapter of ministry by reaffirm-ing your own membership in God’s mission through Christ the King Church. You will have the opportunity to pledge that you will worship, pray, serve, learn, and generously sup-port the congregation’s mission financially. You will have the opportunity publicly to stand as counterpoints to society’s trends. Will you be the divine counterpoints God needs here?

There is so much to be grateful for and generous toward here at Christ the King Church, all because we have been graced beyond measure. May we share God’s infinite grace so that scores more—along with our own renewals of membership vows—will make their stand for God’s work in Christ through this blessed place.

Love,Pastor Duane

Hospitality Apartments - October 9, 16, 23, 30 The Hospitality Apartments provide FREE temporary housing (up to three months) and a safe, welcome, comfortable, sup-portive environment for families in need who must come to Houston for treatment of life-threatening illnesses in the Texas Medical Center hospitals. Since 1968, this 100% volunteer ministry has served over 7,000 families from all over the world. In 2007, they designed, constructed, funded, maintained, and staffed a new ADA-compliant, energy-efficient, 4-story campus.

The Hospitality Apartments started in 1968 in a small rented four-plex Army barracks building. Not only has the Hospital-ity Apartments never had direct government support in its history, but never has any money been spent for professional management or fundraising help. All decisions are made and operations provided by volunteers. There is no paid staff. The Resident Managers are compensated by getting extra time over the three months maximum. Need is the only criterion for eligibility besides living over 50 miles from the Medical Center. Selection is based on chronological order of application.

All apartments are completely furnished, including linens with laundry rooms available at no charge. Occupancy has always been 99.9% of the available apartments. When someone leaves, the apartment is cleaned and families from the wait-ing list are called. Christ the King Lutheran Church has been one of this ministry’s supporting 23 churches for more than 30 years. You are welcome to visit the Hospitality apartments at 7300 Bertner.

Lutheran World Relief - October 2Lutheran World Relief's mis-sion is to empower the local church to serve the most vul-

nerable. With initiatives that focus on disaster response, health and child development, refugee and immigration services, economic development and peacebuilding, Lutheran World Relief works holistically with the local church to stand for the sick, the widowed, the orphaned, the alienated, the displaced, the devastated, the marginalized and the disenfranchised.

Disaster Response: Throughout their history, World Relief has responded to wars, famine, flooding, tsunamis, earthquakes and deadly epidemics. Whether it’s providing winter clothes for refugees fleeing war in cold climates, medical supplies to help those fighting the spread of massively fatal disease or food for survivors of famine, World Relief empowers survivors with tangible support.

Health & Child Development: Many diseases are fully pre-ventable and treatable. But prevention and treatment must be accessible to each person. World Relief’s health and child development programs work to ensure this happens.

Refugee & Immi-gration ServicesBy the end of 2014, nearly 60 mi l l ion people w e r e f o r c i b l y displaced, with nearly a third—20 mi l l ion—l iv ing outside of their countries as refugees. Working in partnership with the local church, World Relief is committed to helping refugees and immigrants from all countries resettle and rebuild their lives.

Economic Development: For 1.6 billion people in the world today, a lack of financial resources means that men, women and children don’t have access to basic necessities like food, clean water and adequate healthcare. World Relief and local church partners teach volunteers financial and agricultural methods that benefit not only individuals, but also entire communities. PeacebuildingWorld Relief coordinates and maintains a number of initia-tives and partnerships to help foster peace in dangerous conflict zones, with programs currently active in DR Congo, the Middle East, Sudan, South Sudan and Pakistan.

Lutherans and Catholics Will Make History on October 31 On October 31, 2016, we will make history. The Lutheran-Catholic com-memoration will take place in Lund, Sweden, with a Common Prayer service led by Pope Francis, The Lutheran World Fed-eration President Bishop Dr. Munib A. Younan and its general secretary, the Rev. Dr. Martin Junge.

After 500 years, both Lutherans and Catholics share the joy for the positive elements of the Reformation, rejoicing together in the gospel and acknowledging that we are sent together as the body of Christ to serve the world. The joint commemoration witnesses to the reality that what unites us is more powerful than what divides us. This event is an opportunity to open doors to new possibilities, strengthen relationships, work together to promote peace, reconciliation and joint diaconal work around the world. As a sign of unity, Lutheran World Service and the Catholic agency, Caritas Internationalis, will commit to a Dec-laration of Intent, promising to work together in programs world-wide. Food for Life, The Spirituality and Ethics of EatingWednesdays, October 19 - November 30, 6:00 p.m.Our Health Ministry and the Creation Care Team invite all members to attend a discussion group on the book, Food for Life, The Spirituality and Ethics of Eating by L. Shannon Jung a professor at Wartburg Theological Seminary. In six sessions, attendees will discuss the seven chapters of this book, which the author promises “will help people learn to enjoy their lives more—perhaps much more.” While such a bold claim might engender skepticism, Jung delivers on his promise, with a text rooted in honest joy, bright-eyed delight, and a deep gratitude for the gifts of God’s creation. He insists that we were created to enjoy life, and argues that delight and sharing are two basic human experiences that reveal the presence of God. Yet the author does not shy away from difficult discussions of sin, hunger, gluttony, and justice. He treats the everyday act of eating as morally and theologically complex, opening our eyes and hearts to things that we may not have considered before. Jung’s thoughtful and enlightening consideration of hunger, food, eating, sharing, and the current global food production and distribution system offers the hungry Christian a feast of ideas and practical suggestions for working towards the ideal of eating “to the glory of God.” Join Linda Schoene and Lisa Brenskelle in thoughtful discussion on Food for Life, The Spirit-uality and Ethics of Eating, each Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. from October 19 – November 30 (no class on November 23, due to the Thanksgiving holiday) The book may be purchased online.

Declaration on the WayWednesdays, October 26 - December 14, 6:00 p.m.One of the great decisions made at this past summer’s ELCA Churchwide Assembly was the overwhelming approval of the document, Declaration on the Way. This is a unique ecumenical document that marks a path toward greater unity between Catholics and Lutherans by summarizing all the doctrinal agreements we have made together over the last forty years and charting a way forward toward deeper expressions of unity. For the American scene, this stands as one of the most important ecumenical Lutheran documents of the last decade. Declaration on the Way also serves as a unique and wonderful way to imagine what it means to be Lutheran in this day, in contexts much different from our typical Lutheran ethnic backgrounds. The document serves as a catalyst for imagining and doing church differently, even “posts-colonially,” better to serve Christ’s desires. The class will be led by Pastor Duane. Everyone will receive a copy of the document for your own weekly “homework.” All of us together will enjoy sparkling conversation about what this document could mean, too, for our own situation and time in Houston. Join us for this stimulating study at 6:00 p.m., 3rd floor conference room, Wednesdays, October 26, November 2, 9, 16, December 7 & 14.

Young People Discover What It Means To Make Mistakes And How To Learn From Themsubmitted by Pastor Janelle Rozek Hooper, Houston Lutheran Campus Ministry Interim Pastor and member of Christ the King Church

We were studying the text from Matthew where the Cannaanite woman’s persistence encourages Jesus to heal her daughter when he says, “Woman great is your faith!” (Matthew 15:21-28) Jesus says this just after calling the woman a dog while claiming that he can only help the people of Israel and not a Cannaanite like her. Upon reflection one of our Houston Lutheran Campus Ministry students said, “I’m not sure I like the thought of

Jesus learning, as if he made a mistake and was learning from it.” What a powerful insight to wrestle with as our young people discover what it means to make mistakes themselves and how to learn from them.

The Canannite woman’s faith broadens the missional field for Jesus who at the time didn’t realize it included people different from him. In the same way campus ministry often expands both the students and the supporters of campus ministry’s expectations around Jesus’ wide welcome. Did you know that half of those in attendance at our University of Houston events are Muslim? Did you know that we support missionaries like Savanna Sullivan,(pictured in an orange shirt) from the ELCA’s Young Adult in Global Mission who reminded us that the communion table we share is one with our family in Rwanda?

Houston Food BankOn September 10, there were 13 volunteers taking part during the "God's Work. Our Hands." weekend. The team had a great time working on the Backpack Buddy program. The bags they assembled will be sent home on Fridays with elementary and middle school students who might not otherwise have anything to at all to eat over the weekends.

The CTK volunteer group contributed to the prepara-tion of 6,240 bags! That translates to a lot of meals for underprivileged children in Houston and the surround-ing 18-county area. It's a great program, and sadly one that has a need far outpacing what the Houston Food Bank can address.

There is just one more volunteering session scheduled for the year. And they're hoping for a great turnout!

Salt and Light

We will join together as Christ the King Lutheran Church for a Day of Service celebrating

this year’s Festival theme:

You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world.

(Matt. 5:13-14)

More details on specific service projects will be included in the November newsletter.

Montrose Grace PlaceChrist the King volunteers have another opportunity to provide a meal for the at-risk youth at Montrose Grace Place on Thursday, October 13! Raelle Frost will be preparing the dinner, but if you are available to help serve, please let Rebecca Shields know at [email protected].

Rebecca helped serve at the new location, the Pink Giraffe House, several weeks ago to get a feel for the routine there-- which is pretty much the same as at Kindred. After you RSVP, she will explain the few changes, parking issues, etc., to those of you who are sched-uled a little closer to the date.

Our last time to serve this year will be Thursday, December 8. Feel free to look ahead at your schedule and volunteer for this date as well. We need people to cook as well as serve at that time.

The date for the MGP Anniversary celebration will be held on Tuesday, October 11, at 7:00 p.m. at Kindred Lutheran Church; and friends, supporters, and volunteers are invited to mix and mingle over light food and drinks.

Nut Free Policy for Children’s ActivitiesA survey of several area churches revealed that churches housing a school/pre-school with a nut free policy also have some form of nut free policy for church related activities. Here at Christ the King the nursery has been nut free per nursery policy for several years. See below for an excerpt from our nursery handbook.

“Many children experience food allergies and the incidence of food allergies is increasing. Symptoms can range from skin rash and itching to anaphy-laxis and death. The peanut is the source of the majority of severe food-related allergic reactions. Peanut allergies present early in life and are gen-

erally not outgrown. Severe allergic reactions can occur with expo-sure to trace amounts of peanut protein.

Avoidance strategies are particularly problematic in very young children. These children cannot read a label. They do not have an understanding of what an allergy is or the verbal ability to ask, “Does that snack have peanuts in it?” Sharing is a concept that is encour-aged in young children. However, young children do not understand the danger associated with sharing a peanut snack with a child who has a peanut allergy. For these reasons, adults caring for children must be vigilant in monitoring what children in their care are eating and implement policies that will create a safe environment for all.

As a result, the nursery does not supply peanuts or peanut-related snacks to children, and we ask parents to be sure peanut snacks are not included in their child’s personal bag when dropped at the nursery.” CTK Nursery Handbook, 2015

In August, 2016 the congregation council approved a nut free policy for children only activities. At this point those activities include the nursery, Godly Play and the Pumpkin Carving Party. Godly Play Story-tellers and Doorpersons received education about implementation of this policy. In addition the All in One Registration Form used for the nursery, Godly Play and WNA classes requests allergy informa-tion and provides for evaluation of those allergies by the congre-gational nurse. For more information please click on the above link to the policy or contact Linda Schoene at [email protected].

Flu Season is HereFlu season can begin as early as October and last as late as May. It is time to consider getting the flu vaccine. High risk groups include young children, pregnant women, persons with chronic diseases like diabetes or asthma, persons 65 years of age and older and health care workers. In addition children under 6 months of age cannot receive so those caring for them should receive the vac-cine. Remember this advice-“Stopping the Flu Starts with You!”.

Bread for the World Sunday

www.bread.org

On Sunday, October 23, our church joins thousands of other churches across the country in celebrating Bread for the World Sunday. In our worship, we lift up ou prayers for those who struggle with hunger-and rededicate ourselves to efforts that help end hunger.

Our prayers and our actions are es-pecially urgent at this time. Severe drought and civil strife have caused

acute malnutrition in Ethiopia, South Sudan, Syria, and other parts of the world. Poverty and violence have pushed many in Latin America to leave their homes and risk everything to escape. Through ou involvement in Bread for the World, we are advocating for humanitar-ian assistance and long-term solutions to hunger.

In the United States, the fall elections will bring about historic changes. In the weeks and months ahead, Con-gress and the newly elected president will be making decisions that will affect the lives of millions of hungry people in ou own country and abroad.

Putting our faith in God who listens to our cries for help (Luke 18:7), we renew our prayers for all those who suffer from need or injustice. We also praythat our newly elected leaders will govern with wisdom, encourage healing, and work for a future in which all have an opportunity to prosper.

Our faith is in Christ, who makes all things new, and we place our hope in God’s vision of a world without hunger.

Justice Advocacy Opportunity: Education for All ActToday, there are 59 million primary school age children out of school around the world—half of them are girls. And, many children who are in school fail to gain basic reading, writing, and numeracy skills. The

Education for All Act (H.R.4481 and S.3256) would ensure that children, no matter where in the world they were born or what their circumstances are, have equal ac-cess to quality education to achieve their full potential. This bill will:

• Focus on marginalized populations, including girls, children affected by conflict, children with disabilities, and victims of gender-based violence.

• Ensure the U.S. government develops a strong, coordinated strategy to work with other countries and effectively use the money set aside to aid global education.

• Guarantee rigorous monitoring and evaluation efforts and an annual report to Congress and the public.

Urge your Congresspersons to co-sponsor this bill at http://www.worldvisionadvo-cacy.org/ (look for the link “Education for All”).

Peace with Justice in the Holy LandAt churchwide assembly in August, a proposal on Peace with Justice in the Holy Land was approved. This proposal reaffirms the commitment of the ELCA to work for a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, to protect Christians in the Holy Land, to promote human rights and the economic empowerment of Palestinians, and to call on the U.S. government to take action to bring about a just peace – leading to a two-state agreement, an end to Israeli occupation and settlement expansion and the recognition of the Palestinian state.

Creation Care Retreat: What about Justice?Friday, October 28 evening - Sunday, October 30 morning

CTK’s Creation Care Team invites you to a weekend of Reformation renewal in the beauty of God’s good creation at the Zion Retreat Center in Galveston, TX. The subject of this retreat is environmental justice, and we will explore Biblical justice, consider how it applies to the world around us, and reflect on how we can do justice. The retreat offers opportunities to study and learn, brain-storm and worship, discuss and reflect, and contemplate and recreate. Most activities on Saturday will take place in Galveston Island State Park, weather permitting. At the park, participants can explore the bay and the beach, walk under the stars at night, see wildlife in the early morning, or simply be at peace in nature. A hands-on outdoor service project in the park will be offered. Let’s rejoice together in God’s good creation! Due to Lutherhill’s generosity, this event is offered at a reduced cost. Space is limited, however, so register early at: www.zionretreat.org. The retreat is open to adults of all ages, and to youth 10+, when accompanied by an adult. Christ the King Church member Marec Béla Steffen’s Opera to be Premiered in Houston November 1, 7:30 p.m.Two Cells In Sevilla, or: Don Quixote is Hungry World PremiereTwo cells overlook a square in Seville. One is a cloister cell, the other, part of a debtors’ prison. Brother Gabriel the monk and Don Miguel the nobleman lament their fate as inmates – and their empty stomachs. The cook in charge of the two institutions does not feed them well. Indeed she does not care about men who cannot buy her presents or take her out to dance. And she is an avid reader of romances. For an errant knight she would cook the most delightful dishes.

The original libretto to this opera was written by Christ the King Church member Marec Béla Steffens.

The Houston performance will be on Tuesday November 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church, 4930 W Bellfort Ave. Free admission, suggested donation $20. A second performance will be in Round Top TX on Saturday, November 5 at 1:30 p.m. Details at festivalhill.org

A Word of Thanks from Bishop Ndanga-TouéThe Rev. Dr. Ndanga-Toué, President (Bishop) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Central African Republic, visited Christ the King Church and preached at the late service on August 14. He was hosted by several congregations in the synod for various types of events. Recently, Bishop Rinehart received a letter of thanks. Here are some translated excerpts of his letter:

“….the positive aspect of my visit was especially the dis-covery of the different churches which form your Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast Synod, and the interest that all these churches showed in regard to the companion relationship which binds us. I was particularly moved to see the desire of these churches to support us spiritually and financially so that we can carry out God’s mission in the Central African Republic.

I very much appreciate the way in which you have been attentive to our difficulties and your wishes to see peace come back to our country.

In the name of the Lutheran Church in the Central African Republic, please share with the various churches of your synod my deep gratitude for all that they did for me during my stay...”

Join Us in Praying to End Hunger 0 GOD, our creator, we give thanks for the abundance of your creation and the daily bread we receive from you. Grant strength and courage to those who struggle to get enough to eat for them-selves and their families. May our nation’s leaders be moved by compassion and wisdom to seek an end to hunger. And may Jesus’ presence in our lives empower us to take action that will create hope and opportunity for hungry people. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

We are Looking for Hosts for SociablesWhat are Sociables? Christ the King Church Sociables are simply

hosted events that support our church mission in two important ways: 1) they build and strengthen relationships and connections across our community, and 2) they raise funds for our outreach ministries. Each year during our Festival weekend we invite members, friends and family to purchase places at Sociables. All of the money that people pay to purchase places at Sociables is donated to one or more of our outreach ministries.

“I might be interested – where do I begin?” Use your imagina-tion to create an

event. Sociables can range from casual to formal, small to large, indoor to outdoor. They can be held in the home, on the road, at the church, at a park… winter, spring, summer, fall…. They can be sporty, entertaining, fun, educa-tional, artsy, musical, intergenerational… be built around breakfast, brunch, lunch, snacks, cocktails, dinner, dessert… in other words: it’s up to you! The hosts (or co-hosts) should have as much fun planning and hosting as the guests have attending!

Think about what you might like to do and when. You’ll find a few ideas at the bottom of this page, but don’t let that limit your creativity. Is there someone who might co-host or help you with an event? How much money could you contribute or raise to cover the costs; do you have personal or business contacts that might pitch in to underwrite some or all of the event costs? What about a package deal: are you willing to cook for a group but need a sponsor? Are you willing to contribute funds to help cover costs of a Sociable that someone else will organize?

What do we need from you? A n e m a i l to B eve r l y D av i s , [email protected] with a short

description of what you have in mind, whether it is to host or support an event. You don’t have to have all of the details worked out to begin with.
