Merry Christmas to all PGA families in the Northwest! The great majority of us have a lot to be thankful for. We all know times are tough, but this is the time when we can show our employers how valuable the PGA Professional is to the golf operation. We need to become proactive in recruiting

new members to our facility and getting new golfers on the course. As most of us know, PGA National is pushing Golf 2.0. This initiative is all about growing the game and, while I have some problems with its implementation, the concept is right on. Take advantage of the programs National is providing and be the solution at your facility.

With 2011 coming to the end, I want to thank every PGA Professional who has helped run and promote any of the programs the Pacific Northwest Section runs. I also ask all of you to thank our great staff for all they do for us. Jeff and the wonderful ladies in the Section office work on our

behalf every day. And in all five chapters we have sponsors and staff who we need to thank as well. Give them a call, text them, e-mail them and tell them thank you.

I personally thank you for the opportunity to work in your behalf. I promise you that when you volunteer and get involved with your Chapter, Section, or with National, you receive much more than you give. If you have not been involved in the past, make a resolution to get involved in 2012–play more golf and volunteer for your Chapter and Section.

Happy Holidays to you and yours,

Steve Prugh

By Jeff Ellison, PGA

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of you, from your staff in Tumwater. We designed the cover photo to say thank you to you for all your support. On behalf of Jenna, Caitlin, Dana, Angela, Molly, Rebekah, Marlena and myself, thank you for making 2011 a good year for all of us.

December is just one short month in which to wind down a very busy 2011 and get ready for a successful 2012. Like you, we’ll find a way to make it happen. The New Year will bring us a number of important issues.

First, your Section Board will gather in Federal Way on January 4-5, 2012 for the annual Business Planning Session and Winter Board Meeting. During these two very busy days, your Board will chart the course for the Section for the next twelve months. Feel free to reach out to your representatives before this meeting if you have any concerns, suggestions or feedback on our programs. The officers received the first draft of our $1.68 million budget in late November. Rebekah and I will meet with the officers on December 5 to further refine a draft budget for the entire Board. When you add in the Chapters, our financial processes manage almost $4 million in revenue each year. What is our number one revenue source? We process $2 million dollars in entry fees from the over 220 Section and Chapter events on the schedule! With this volume, a plan is important. The Board will work hard to manage YOUR business responsibly.

Next year will be a busy year on the governance front. January 1 and the Annual Meeting in Orlando later in the month mark the kick-off of the campaign for National Secretary. It looks to be a crowded field again this year. Your officers vetted a few of the candidates pretty hard last year and will be very interested in what the candidates have to say this year. At the Fall Meeting, the Section Board of Directors will also be selecting our next representative to serve as District 14 Director on the PGA Board of Directors. Our selection will “shadow” Michael Haywood for 2013 before moving into the official chair in 2014. This opportunity is open to all Section members; watch your email for more information. Finally, you will also be selecting your next slate of Section Officers, in particular the next Section Secretary. Also open to all Section members, the process will get started on April 1. Candidates must be nominated by their Chapter a minimum of 60 days prior to the Annual Meeting and we’ll get to know the candidates through monthly presentations in ForeWord Press. Feel free to give me a call if you are interested in either of these positions.

The PGA Financial Assistance Fund Scholarship application is now available on PGALinks. Open to children and grandchildren of PGA Members, this program provides $2,500 scholarships to deserving students. The application must be completed on-line at PGALinks and since your student will be completing the application, the link is presented on the PGALinks home page BEFORE you log in. The application must be submitted along with a transcript from the first semester no later than March 15, 2012. Good Luck.

Speaking of PGALinks, take a few minutes this winter to review the impressive array of PGA Member Benefits developed by the PGA of America. Log in and click the Benefits tab. In addition to the traditional travel benefits there are programs from KitchenAid, Office Max and even United Rentals. You’ll be surprised how many different opportunities are available.

I hope you read my recent email regarding the changes to the Rules of Golf for 2012. One thing is certain; you’ll need both a new Rules of Golf Book and a new Decisions Book for 2012. To review the changes, visit www.usga.org and click on the Rules of Golf tab. A little time spent this winter will save you some embarrassment on the course in our events and especially in the shop with your members. Molly and I will be attending a PGA/USGA Workshop this spring… maybe you should too!

Winter is also a good time to tune up that resume and work on your career plans. Reach out to our PGA Employment Consultant, Jeff Beaudry, to make sure you are positioning yourself for that dream job or just maximizing your opportunity in your current position. Jeff can be reached at 801-568-3980 or [email protected].

The Section Tournament schedule is available on the web site, and while we are finalizing a few sites, I can tell you we should be playing for $700,000 again this year in the fourteen Section events with professional purses. We enjoyed a number of really great purses in 2011 and next year looks to be a repeat of this good fortune. Why not enter and take advantage of this great tournament program. Better yet, bring a friend and our purses will increase greatly! Set time aside in your schedule today to play with your fellow professionals.

Have a great Holiday season, work on your game a little, recharge those batteries and get ready for a successful 2012. As always, give us a call if we can be of help.

As we are approaching the Holiday Season, it’s time to reflect on the amazing charities that our Tournament Program,

with help from our sponsors, has helped support. Together we have raised crucial funds for childrens’ programs, and now we invite you to donate to one or more of these excellent charities in the spirit of the holidays. The Section charities are the Junior Golf Fund, Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, Camp Korey, Children’s Developmental Center, Providence St. Mary’s Medical Center charity and Kids Center.

The Pacific Northwest Section PGA Junior Golf Fund, Inc. is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) corporation, committed to the

future of golf by educating juniors and providing them the opportunity to play. The goal of the Junior Golf Fund is to introduce the game of golf to

those who ordinarily would not have the opportunity. Finding kids that do not have the opportunity to be exposed to golf is easy; finding a way to bring the two together is not. Through various programs throughout the Section, the Junior Fund has made great strides in bringing golf to thousands of youngsters who may not ever have known what a golf club was. There aren’t many things more exciting in golf than seeing a kid’s face light up when he or she hits that first good golf shot. To donate, please send a check to the Section Office written out to Pacific Northwest PGA Junior Golf Fund Inc.

Proceeds from the Rosauers Open Invitational benefit the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, Spokane’s safe haven for

children at risk of abuse and neglect. The Nursery also provides counseling, education and referrals for parents of young children. Their mission statement says it all “The Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery improves the lives of children by providing immediate refuge and safety and ongoing family support in an environment of unconditional love.”

For more information or learn how to donate and help the Nursery reach more families, visit www.vanessabehan.

org. The 2011 event made $131,500 for the charity with over $2.1 million raised since 1988.

The official charity of the Washington

Open Invitational is Camp Korey. Camp Korey is named for Korey Rose, a vivacious teen who lost his battle with bone cancer at eighteen. His father, Tim Rose, founded Camp Korey in 2005 with his family to honor Korey’s memory and create a safe haven for other families dealing with childhood illness and serious medical conditions. The camp offers year-round recreation with full support for the medical needs of campers, plus all the fun of just being a kid. To learn more about the charity or to make a donation, please go to www.campkorey.

org The Washington Open raised over $500,000 this year, more than double the $230,000 earned last year.

The Children’s Developmental Center, located in Richland,

Washington, is one of the two charities supported by the Northwest Open Invitational. The Center has provided neurodevelopmental services to

infants and toddlers since 1977. Most of their clients are located in Benton and Franklin counties, but they also serve clients from the Mid-Columbia area of Oregon. Many babies begin life with a delay in one or more areas of their development. Early intervention specialists at the Children’s Developmental Center are trained to provide specialized instruction and a variety of therapies to help children reach their full potential. For more information or learn how to donate –go to www.childrensdevelopmentalcenter.org

Providence St. Mary Medical Center charity was also supported by the Northwest Open Invitational. Providence

of acute care hospitals in the United States that have the best patient outcomes and are operated with the greatest efficiency. Providence St. Mary Medical Center is a full service hospital

with some of the best technology, expertise, specialists and primary care physicians in the region. To learn more about this charity or to make a donation, go to www.smmc.com

Kids Intervention and Diagnostic Service (KIDS) Center is a

child advocacy center serving Central Oregon. Founded in 1994 by the community, KIDS Center works together with law enforcement, medical providers and social service agencies to create a supportive response to child abuse through a multi-disciplinary team approach. They interview and medically evaluate children who they have suspected abuse. Their child friendly environment seeks to find out what has happened and to provide a path to healing through family support and therapeutic services. For more information or learn how to donate –go to www.kidscenter.org

All of these charities are in need of more funds so they can continue making a difference in the

community. If you have extra funds this winter that you would like to go towards a great cause, please consider donating to one or more of these deserving charities.

Thanks for helping make such a difference to so many families!

The 2011 tournament season is officially over, and here at the Section office we’re almost done putting together the highlights of this exciting season into the 2011 Annual. This hard-bound book contains not only the winners of our Section and Chapter tournaments, but those of the amateur associations as well. It is the best reference for results of PNWPGA, Pacific Northwest Golf Association, Montana State Golf Association, Oregon State Golf Association and Washington State Golf Association tournaments - all in one place for easy lookup, including photographs.

Record your club’s champions alongside those of the PNWPGA and amateur association champions! With your listing fee of $200, we will publish your club name and logo, head PGA professional and two club officials as well as four club champions. Additional officials and champions may be added for $20 each.

Complete this form and fax or e-mail to include your club in Pacific Northwest golf history. If you have not completed all your tournaments for the season, just write “TBA” next to the events with winners that are still to be determined.

Do you need a copy of the Pacific Northwest Section annual from a previous year for your facility or

personal collection? We have annuals from 2001 to 2010 available for only the price of postage. Please contact Marlena Cannon with requests for annuals.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call the Section office.
