The hotel will close on May 1 until Novemberwith Bangkok-based P49Deesign overseeingdesign for the project.
P49 also created the Strand Cruise, a luxuryriver cruiser that launched at the end of lastyear, and has undertaken many projects forhotel groups including Taj, Anantara, Alila andSix Senses in the past.
While the hotel is closed, the company plansto run a Strand ’pop up’ at the Inya Lake Hotelin the city, where guests booked on a StrandCruise can receive a complimentary night’sstay.
“This refurbishment comes just months afterthe successful launch of The Strand Cruise,our 27-cabin river cruiser operating on theAyeyarwady River between Bagan andMandalay, and will further reinforce theStrand’s position as market leader in theregion,” said Olivier Trinquand, vice presidentof The Strand Hotel & Cruise.

The 31-suite hotel was built in 1901 by Avietand Tigran Sarkies, who also create colonialhotels such as Raffles in Singapore and theEastern & Oriental in Penang.
The Strand’s classic colonial style will beretained, with a more contemporary edgeadded, along with new air conditioning, soundand communications systems.
The Strand Signature Restaurant is also set tore-open with a Michelin-starred chef at thehelm; Sarkies Bar – known as a social hub forthe city for 114 years - will also be fullyrefurbished.
During the closure, all staff will be retainedand the hotel said it will use the opportunityto invest in service training and languagecourses.
