NEW ITEMS ADDED TODAY Welcome to the Silent Auction Catalog. Please familiarize yourself with the bidding rules below as this will help you win!

Electronic bidding on items in the catalog starts noon Saturday, April 28 and continue until noon on Saturday, May 5. Bids timestamped later will

not be considered. Items will then be available for bids in person at the Luncheon Event celebrating Mary Lou Williamson’s service as editor of the

News Review. The Luncheon is at the Marriott on Ivy Lane from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 6; tickets must be purchased in advance from a link on

our website, https://greenbeltarchive.org and only ticketed attendees may bid in person. In-person bidding is from 12:45 p.m. to 2:45 p.m.

NOTE: Check with your tax person for questions of tax deductibility.

Reserve Bids less than the reserve price are not valid. If the reserve price is not met during the auction, the

item remains unsold.

Bid Increment A valid bid must be in whole dollars and must exceed the current high bid by at least the bid

increment. For example, if the current high bid is $45 and the bid increment is $2, then a new bid

must be at least $47 to be valid. Larger increments are joyfully accepted. If there is not yet a bid

recorded, the reserve price may be bid. For example, if the reserve is $50 and no bid is yet

recorded, a valid bid must be at least $50.

Identification of Bidders The bidder ID is formed from the first two letters of the last name and the first two of the first

name. Fred Bloggs would be BLFR. If there is also (for heaven’s sake) a Francis Blandford

(BLFR2), we will add a suffix and inform both BLFRs. You find out if you are the new high

bidder by checking the updated catalog to see if your code is there – we will not notify you

directly. The high bid at close of electronic bidding is the starting bid for in-person bidding

Bidding Once bidding begins, this catalog will update to show the current high bids as of the most recent 7

a.m. To bid, email your name, the item number, the amount of the bid and your phone number to

[email protected] (you can also use the contact form on the website). Bids received

by 7 a.m. will be included in the next catalog update at ~8 a.m. You may bid on more than one

item per email. And we hope you do! See the box at right for examples of how bidding works.

Dear Greenbelt Archive Project.

My name is Inigo Montoya. My phone

number is 301-474-1234.

I wish to bid on:

Item 2 $27

Item 25 $40

Item 32 $750

Item 38 $15

Thanks a bunch!

IM.

Mr. Montoya’s bid id is MOIN.

• Item 2: Bid exceeded the ‘buy now’

price so he wins it outright

• Item 25: Bid of $40 on the art tour was

highest so far, so his bid ID is there.

• Item 32: Bid of $750 was NOT the

highest so his Bid-ID isn’t on Item 32.

• Item 38: Bid below reserve – invalid bid.

If you have questions on the bidding

mechanics, please call 301 655 7008.

Bid Catalog – As of 7 a.m., May 1. Next update ~8 a.m. May 2.

The highest valid bid received by 7 a.m. will become the new high bid in the updated catalog. In the event of a tie, the earliest of the tied bids will be

the high bid. The updated catalog should be online at ~8 a.m. and will be date-stamped here.

Buy Now If a bid equals or is in excess of the ‘Buy Now’ price, bidding ends on that item and the catalog will indicate that bids are closed. If multiple bidders

meet the Buy Now criteria at a 7 a.m. reconciliation time, the winner is the highest such bid. If there is a tie, the earliest (by email timestamp) wins.

Paying for Items If you win an item, either online or during the luncheon, we request you pay for it at the luncheon and take it with you if it is portable. If you bid

online and win but are NOT at the luncheon, we will contact you by the end of the day Monday, May 7 by email to arrange for payment. In all cases,

the acceptable method of payment is by check. For service or food items, your receipt will include contact information for the donor so you can

arrange for the item and discuss timing.

Sales Tax Due to the State of Maryland’s rules on and the newness of our organization, sales tax is payable on these items. The bid price will be inclusive of

sales tax – in other words if you bid $250, that’s what you will pay and we will back the tax out of that. It takes four months to get the Maryland

certification that would have prevented the payment of sales tax and we’ve only been around a few weeks.

The Small Print *The silent auction is sponsored by the Greenbelt Archive Project and not the Greenbelt News Review. The organizers reserve the right to remove any item from the catalog at

any time and bids on any such items then become void. Consult your tax advisor concerning charitable deductibility.

Once paid for, items that require an arrangement with the provider of the item, for example a garden party or loaf of bread, are the responsibility of the purchaser to arrange at the

mutual convenience of buyer and seller. Contact information will be provided. In the event that any sales tax is due, it will be deemed to have been included in the bid price.

Have a Hootenanny! Imagine how fun it

would be to have Transatlantic Crossing

play for an hour at a venue of your choice,

in Greenbelt or within 3 miles thereof.

Transatlantic Crossing is the family band of

News Review Staffer Anne Gardner and her

husband Jon. They specialize in fiddle

tunes from both sides of the Atlantic,

including toe-tapping jigs and reels. Anne

plays fiddle, Jon plays guitar, and often they

are joined by son David on piano, accordion

and flute, and daughters Elizabeth and

Rebecca on fiddle and electric bass. The

group frequently plays at Greenbelt contra

dancing evenings and is a favorite at the

Farmers Market. Composition of the group

may vary according to availability of kids

(you know how THAT goes).

These railroad lanterns are from the old Canadian railway. One is red and one is green so perhaps you can use them to signal your state of mind at the office. In any case, Diana Weatherby’s attic produced these heirlooms because, growing up in northern Maine, the Canadian railways were close by.
