MAKING CONNECTIONS TO LEARNING STANDARDS

The New Victory Theater is New York City’s first full-time performing arts theater for kids, their families and classmates. Since it opened in 1995, The New Victory has quickly become an integral part of the cultural landscape in New York City, presenting a full season of adventurous multidisciplinary works from around the globe and close to home. The New Vic seeks out sophisticated, thought-provoking, professional productions that are as artistically rich as they are entertaining.

The international productions on NEW VICTORY stages inform and inspire the work of the award-winning NEW VICTORY Education Program through a dynamic combination of school and public programs. Our school programs serve over 35,000 Pre-K through 12th grade students and teachers each season at almost no cost to the kids or their schools. Many of our partners are NYC-area Title I schools, with a high percentage of students who would be unable to experience live theater if it weren’t for The New Victory. The enthusiastic young people who greet you on your way into the theater are part of the New Vic Usher Corps, a 3-year program that provides 27,000 hours of paid employment for 75-80 high school and college-age youth each season. Families who attend the New Vic together combine their theater-going with NEW VICTORY Family Workshops, as well as free in-theater engagement activities. Together, these nationally-recognized programs exemplify the organization’s long-standing commitment to the intrinsic value of cultural participation in the lives of young people and families.

Available to Education Partners for every show in our season, NEW VICTORY SCHOOL TOOL Resource Guides provide educators with comprehensive materials that explore the artistry and key themes of each production. Filled with practical, ready-to-implement activities that allow any teacher to incorporate The New Victory into their classroom, the NEW VICTORY SCHOOL TOOL Resource Guides are designed to enrich the performance experience before, during and after the students’ trip to the theater.

NEW VICTORY SCHOOL TOOL Resource Guides align with the Common Core State Standards, New York State Learning Standards and New York City Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts. We believe that these standards support both the high quality instruction and deep engagement that The New Victory Theater strives to achieve in its arts education practice.

CLOSER LOOK AT PINOCCHIO

• Windmill Theatre creates dynamic, sophisticated performances for children, young people and families. The company was founded in 2002 with the purpose of creating inventive, adventurous shows to tour across Australia and internationally. Windmill recently performed at The New Victory Theater with the shows Grug (2013) and Plop (2012).

• Windmill Theatre and State Theatre Company of South Australia's production of PINOCCHIO is an adaptation of Carlo Collodi's dark and episodic tale, The Adventures of Pinocchio, written in 1883. It is now the most widely read Italian book of all time. It has been translated into more than 400 languages and has inspired hundreds of adaptations.

• Windmill Theatre found inspiration for their production in the work of Bruno Bettelheim, a psychologist who wrote about how dark themes in fairy tales allow children to confront real fears in symbolic ways. In PINOCCHIO, the live rock music that accompanies the show draws upon the story’s dark nature, while vibrant, moving video projections allow the story to transition in an episodic way. This particular production emphasizes the title character’s need for the spotlight, no matter the cost.

• DID YOU KNOW the original tale of PINOCCHIO takes place in Tuscany, Italy, and was loosely based on the parable, "The Prodigal Son" from the Bible?

"My father made me out of love and a log. He worked all night and when he was finished, he said I was the sweetest thing he'd ever seen," says Pinocchio.

"No, no, no," sneers the sinister Stromboli, "that's not your story. You're an orphan. Nobody wanted you, but you rose above it all to become a big star and the world loves you! Got it?"

With bold ballads, angsty anthems and a plot knotted with tabloid twists, Carlo Collodi's classic tale about a wooden boy with a nose for trouble gets remastered in this psychedelic rock musical. Tenderly tooled by the lonely Geppetto, Pinocchio takes a walk on the wild side when the need to belong gives way to temptations of fun, fame and the dream of becoming a real boy. Last seen at the Sydney Opera House, this "really brilliant musical for kids" (Time Out Sydney) is a visually stunning, must-see production.

WHERE IN THE WORLD IS PINOCCHIO FROM?

• Located in South Australia, Adelaide and its neighbors are fast becoming known as “The Friendliest State.” Knowing the good people at Windmill Theatre/State Theatre Company of South Australia, we couldn’t agree more!

• The Kaurna Aboriginal people settled the Adelaide Plains more than 40,000 years ago, naming it Tandanya, meaning “place of the red kangaroo.” In 1836, England renamed it Adelaide in honor of King William's celebrated wife.

PINOCCHIO

Prior to exploring PINOCCHIO with your students, find out how much they already know about theatrical adaptation and rock musicals. In addition, allow them to explore the theme of what makes someone real.

Have you ever seen a fairy tale told on stage before? What is the difference between reading the story as a book and seeing it on stage?

What do you think a rock musical is? What instruments do you think you will hear during the show?

What do you know about the story of Pinocchio?

The character Pinocchio is known for telling lies. Why do people tell lies?

What makes someone do good things? What makes someone do bad things?

Pinocchio wants to be a real boy. How do you know that you’re real? What does it feel like to be real?

Do you want to be famous? Why? What do you think are the positive aspects of being famous? What are the negative aspects?

WHAT DO YOUR STUDENTS KNOW NOW?

THEATRICAL ADAPTATIONPlays you see on stage are often adapted from books, movies and stories and are retold by a playwright in a new, unique way. Windmill Theatre’s production of PINOCCHIO is a loose adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s original story. The script, adapted by co-writers Rosemary Myers and Julianne O’Brien incorporates contemporary cultural references to make it accessible and interesting to a new generation. While your students watch this play, ask them to notice which parts of the story they are familiar with and which parts of the story are new to them.

ROCK MUSICALSIn the wake of the “Golden Age of Musicals” (1940 - 1960) a new genre of musical theater was born. Beginning with Hair in 1967, the second half of the 20th century gave birth to rock musicals which have become some of the biggest hits on Broadway. Notable examples include: The Who’s Tommy, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Little Shop of Horrors, Rent and Rock of Ages! Rock musicals are said to have an authentic voice of the time and energize the audience like a concert would, with toe-tapping hits that sometimes make their way to top 20 billboards!

ACTIVITY 1: A NOSE THAT GROWS!

AFTER BEYOND

PINOCCHIO

BEFORE

INSIDE EN ROUTE

See what your students remember about the story of Pinocchio and then help them make a nose that grows!

Materials: “A Winding Synopsis” Summary (INSIDE section, page 7)CardstockScissorsTapeDrinking Straws

1. Ask your students if they know the story of Pinocchio. Where did they first hear or see the story?

2. See how much of the Pinocchio story they can recall. Confirm what they can remember and then present them with the “Winding Synopsis” of PINOCCHIO (from the INSIDE section). Are there any aspects of Windmill Theatre / State Theatre Company of South Australia’s retelling of this classic story different than they remember?

3. Next, ask them to recall the character of Pinocchio. What are his defining characteristics? Remind your students that Pinocchio is a little boy carved from wood who wants to become real. He struggles with doing the right thing and being kind to others, which keeps him from being a real boy. And, most notably, when Pinocchio lies, his nose grows!

4. Ask your students the questions:“Why do people tell lies? Is there a time in your life that you told a lie? Why did you do it?”

5. Guide your students in making their own nose that grows by following these easy steps!

a. Cut two strips of cardstock, each about 2” wideb. Attach the pieces to one another using tapec. Twist the long strip so that it becomes a coned. Attach a straw to the end of the nose (so that they can control it)e. Allow kids to play with their noses!

6. Use the nose in Activity 2 of this section for “Two Truths And A Lie.”

ACTIVITY 2: TWO TRUTHS AND A LIEUse the Pinocchio noses from Activity 1 to play two truths and a lie!

Materials (optional): Pinocchio noses

1. Tell your students that each one of them will participate in a game called Two Truths And A Lie. To play the game, each student will stand up and introduce him or herself, stating two facts that are true about themselves and one “fact” that is a lie. The lie should not be obvious! The goal is to make it challenging for others to guess which one is the lie.

2. Review with your students some strategies they might use to conceal their lie.

3. Give your students approximately 3 - 5 minutes to come up with their “two truths and a lie.”

4. Divide your students into two teams. Explain that one student from each team will stand up and say their “two truths and a lie.” You then repeat the students’ statements and the other team will guess which is the lie. Students will vote on which statement they believe to be the lie by "growing" their noses. Majority opinion rules! If the majority of the opposing team guesses correctly, they get a point!

5. Play until all students have had a turn to introduce themselves, then tally the points to find the winner!

REFLECTION QUESTIONSWhat were the most successful strategies people used totell a lie?Why do people tell lies? Are there such things as harmless lies, good lies or bad lies? Why is it important to be honest? Why do you think it’s important for Pinocchio to learn to be honest before he can become a real boy?

PINOCCHIO

Following your trip to the New Victory, you may find that your students want to discuss the performance and their own opinions. Reflecting on the show and voicing an aesthetic response is an important part of the theater-going experience. Allowing your students the opportunity to articulate their thoughts and hear the ideas of their classmates will increase the impact of the theater experience.

Here are some questions that might help you lead a post-show reflection with your class:

1. What do you think happens next in the story of Pinocchio? What happens to Stromboli?

2. Do you think Pinocchio will be happier now that he’s real?

3. What makes someone evil?

4. What makes someone brave?

5. How can you tell the difference between right and wrong?

6. Why do we get embarrassed by our parents or elders?

7. What would you give up for fame?

PERFORMANCE REFLECTIONTEACHER TIP Engaging in dialogue, asking questions and recalling observations are skills that we believe should be fostered and encouraged. When leading a performance reflection discussion, try the following model of critical response: Describe (I saw…) Analyze (I wonder…) Interpret (I think/feel…) Evaluate (I believe…)

Don’t forget to think about the set, costumes, lighting, music, character and performing choices.

HEADLINE:

WHAT I SAW:

HOW THE SHOW MADE ME FEEL (What mood were you in after the show? What about the show made you feel that way?):

IN-CLASSROOM WORKSHOP EXTENSION:BUT THEN I MET STROMBOLI AND EVERYTHING CHANGED!

AFTER

BEFORE BEYONDINSIDE EN ROUTE

Pinocchio goes from being an ordinary wooden boy to a famous rockstar known around the world! Using the song writing skills your students learned in the post-show workshop, have them write a song about THEIR transformation from regular kid to rockstar!

1. First, have your students write down their answers to the following prompts about their daily life:

a. How do you spend a normal day?b. Where do you live?c. What is your favorite thing to do?d. What do you dream of doing?

2. Next, have your students write down their answer to the same prompts, but this time have them imagine what their answers would be if they were rockstars!

3. Now, it’s time to turn their answers into a song! Tell students that their song will take the following structure:

a. The verse will be four lines long and about who they are as a regular kid.b. The chorus will also be four lines long and about who they are as a rockstar.c. The verse and the chorus will be connected by the following line: “But

then I met Stromboli and everything changed.”d. Try to make your song rhyme (for example: make lines 1 and 3 rhyme

and lines 2 and 4 rhyme in an ABAB rhyme scheme, i.e. the last word rhyming at the end of every other line in the song).

4. Once students have had a chance to write their song lyrics, challenge them to think of a melody to go along with their lyrics. Encourage them to speak their lyrics out loud a few times to help them get started.

5. Have students share their songs! This could be in front of the whole class or with a partner, or have them record the song to share with you.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSHow is the real you similar or different from the rockstar you? What did you like about your classmates’ songs? Did anything surprise you?How did your lyrics help inspire the melody you chose for your song?

CLASSROOM CONNECTIONS: COME TO THE DARK SIDE

AFTER

BEFORE BEYONDINSIDE EN ROUTE

Windmill Theatre / State Theatre Company of South Australia's production of PINOCCHIO embraces the dark side of this well known story. The music, set, costumes, lighting and other elements all combine to enhance the grim and bizarre aspects of this story. Use this activity to encourage your students to embrace the dark side of their favorite fairy tales.

1. As a class, have a discussion about how this production of PINOCCHIO embraced the dark side of the story. Ask students: “Was this production scary or spooky? What about the production made it that way? What theatrical elements were used to enhance the dark aspects of the story?”

2. Break students into groups of 4 or 5 and ask them to choose a favorite fairy tale that they would like to explore.

3. Once each group has picked a fairy tale, tell students to research the origins of this tale to see if there are any alternate versions with dark or spooky elements that they don’t know about.

4. Tell students that they will be designing a concept for a musical production of this fairy tale. This production will be in the style of PINOCCHIO and will embrace and enhance the “dark side” of the story.

5. Students should think about the following things when developing their concept:a. What makes this story dark or spooky? How does this change your understanding of the story?b. What parts of the story should be enhanced or included for you to showcase the dark side of the story?c. What kind of music will be in your production? d. Who will be the main character (for example: maybe the villain becomes the main character or a character

who is normally not in the spotlight)e. What will the set, costumes and lighting look like?

6. Based on these questions, have each group come up with a “pitch” for their new production. Each pitch should explain the concept clearly and make a case for why this production should be created. Encourage students to include sketches of set, lighting, costumes, character ideas and samples of possible songs.

7. Have each group present their pitch to the class and convince their classmates to come to the dark side!

TIP: For younger students, pick a fairy tale that the whole class can explore and have each group come up with one element of the production.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSWhy do you think so many fairy tales have a dark or grim element?Which group’s production would you most like to see on stage? Why?What was it like to think about these fairy tales in a new way? Did it change your opinion or your understanding of fairy tales?

EXTENDING THE EXPERIENCE: FOR LOVE. FOR FAME. FOR POWER!Have fun extending the show experience with your students with this PINOCCHIO-inspired talent show!

1. Tell your students that Stromboli has called and is accepting new talent for his worldwide tour!

2. Give your students time to think of what they might want to do for their audition for Strombolly-wood. Maybe they have a skill that they can do solo or perhaps there is something they want to perform in groups.

3. Suggest some possible acts that they might want to try such as:a. Stand-up comedy (like The Cricket at the beginning of Act 2)b. Performing part of a songc. Performing a short danced. Reading something they wrotee. Doing a quick trick solo or with friends (This could be an acrobatic trick, a magic trick or any other trick!)f. Sharing something that they designed (like their Playland from the EN ROUTE section!)

4. Have your students write down the top 3 things they would be interested in performing so that you are able to curate the talent show and make sure that everyone has a chance to shine.

5. Don’t forget to come up with something to perform yourself! Invite another teacher to join you. Your students will love it!

6. Rehearse and perform the auditions for Strombolly-wood! Invite another class to give your kids a supportive audience.

REFLECTION QUESTIONSWhat is it like to perform in public? What is the most exciting part about performing? When were you most nervous to perform?Do you think any of our acts would make it into Strombolly-wood?
