Letter from the PresidentCompliments of the season!

I was honoured to be invited to attend the Christmas Party of the Probus Club of Claremont and Cottesloe, which was jointly sponsored by the previous Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay and the Rotary Club of Claremont Cottesloe. Both sponsoring Rotary clubs folded, though the Probus Club is going strong, with over 100 (all male) members.

The President of the Probus Club is keen to establish a relationship with our Rotary Club. During the Christmas luncheon, three members of the club all came and introduced themselves as Past Presidents of the old Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay. They are all delighted that a new Rotary Club of Freshwater Bay is in operation.

I have extended an invitation to the Probus Club President, Alan Godfroy, to speak to our club about Probus and explore ideas for cementing some sort of relationship between our clubs.

It was also a pleasure to celebrate our own Christmas

party and 2nd anniversary. Thank you to all those that joined us for a lovely dinner at the Nedlands Golf Club, and I hope you enjoyed Max Kay's presentation as much as I did.

While most of you are enjoying a short break from Rotary over Christmas, I will be working with the committee directors to set the program for the next few months. We'll be trying something a little different, with the aim of making meetings more participatory, and hopefully more rewarding for you to attend.

I am also thrilled to announce that I have been invited by DGE Liz Westoby to serve as an Assistant Governor in 2011/12, which is something I look forward to once my term as President has concluded.

Wishing you all a safe and joyful festive season, and I look forward to seeing you on January 8th at the barbecue at the Forsdykes' home.

Last Week’s meetingOur club celebrated it second birthday (with our charter anniversary on 19th December) and Christmas with a traditional Christmas menu at the Nedlands Golf Club on Thursday, 16th December (also the birthday of our Membership Director, Ken Collins).

Entertainer and former Councillor Max Kay and his wife Norma were the special guests of the Club. Max gave us a very entertaining talk on his life from leaving Scotland to the present. We learned about his financial ups and

downs as well as his move into the Perth entertainment industry, his purchase of the Old Time Music Hall, which after 25 successful years of hard work he decided to sell, and his subsequent move into civic life as a Councillor with the Perth City Council. Good News on Justin Hewett

The Rotary Foundation reviewed the Ambassadorial Scholarship Application for Justin and have now allocated him the Tsinghuh University in Beijing, which was his first choice. The news was met with relief and joy by Justin, DG Ian Hutton and the entire District Scholarships Committee.

Knitted toysMargaret Brawley has handed over five bags (80 items) of her beautiful knitted toys which will go to Cambodia with Gary and Kim Hewett for the orphans in their orphanages.

Many thanks Margaret for all the hours of work you have put in to bring joy to these children.

Jotik Napit is a Rotarian!

Jotik Napit, the headmaster of the Angel Academy School in Kathmandu, was inducted into the RC of Kathmandu last week. Members will remember Jotik’s visit to our Club a few weeks back.

He is delighted to be a Rotarian and is the youngest member of the RC of Kathmandu.

RYLA DinnerOur Club has sponsored one participant (Calum Foulner) for the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Camp which is being held from 29th Jan to 4th Feb 2011.

There will be a dinner on 3rd February to which Rotarians are invited to attend. The President / New Generations Director is invited (one is complimentary) along with any other members of the Club at a nominal cost of $15 per person.

It will be held at the Bickley Outdoor Recreation Centre, Hardinge Road, Orange Grove. Time is 6.30pm for 7.00pm start. Any members interested in attending please contact PP Barry Ryall on [email protected]

NYSFIf any members are prepared to host students from the National Youth Science Forum, which is being held in Perth for two weeks in January, on Sunday, 16th January, please contact New Generations Director Marcos.

The day is to provide the students with the opportunity to catch up on washing and sleep. Hosts are not required to do touristy things, just provide a washing machine, bed and meals (lunch and dinner). Students will be allocated in 2s, 4s or 6s.

Review of Literacy and Remedial Reading ProgramsKen and Di Collins were invited to attend meetings during the week with a visiting group from Sydney who are members of the

Exodus Foundation Board: Nicola Forrest, members from the Government and other youth organisations.

The Exodus Foundation is having excellent results with la Literacy program in NSW and Qld and would like to expand this to Western Australia.

It takes very illiterate primary school children, with reading ages up to 4 years below their chronological age and through an intensive Reading Recovery Program of 16 weeks, up to a 1 ½ year reading gain is made. The Foundation included Rotary in the meeting due to our volunteer capacity.

Ray's Rotary Reunions at the Fairest Cape!3-5 February 2011

Dear Governor and Rotary Leader,

You may be aware that in Cape Town at the beginning of February 2011 District 9350 will be hosting an event which President Ray Klinginsmith has personally masterminded called Ray’s Rotary Reunions. What began as a reunion for all past University of Cape Town Ambassadorial Scholars has developed into a three-day gathering including any Rotarian who wishes to attend. Please see the Web site:http://raysrotaryreunions.weebly.com.

The first day will still remain as a university alumni reunion, however the second and third days will be for general alumni and any other Rotarians interested in discovering projects and partnering with clubs in Africa. As part of the gathering there will be a project expo at which clubs will present projects that they are about to embark on, or have already started, and

seek partners to help in carrying them out. Interested Rotary clubs may still register for this.

During the two days for general alumni and Rotarians the gathering will be addressed by eminent speakers. Scheduled to speak are Rotarians such as RI President Ray himself and Past RI President Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar. Other notable speakers include former South African President and Nobel Peace Laureate F. W. de Klerk, South African Minster of Finance Pravin Gordhan, Rotary Foundation alumna and Constitutional Court Judge Katherine O’Regan, and Ambassadorial Scholar alumnus and South African diplomat Francis Moloi.

We would like to have as many interested Rotarians as possible participate. To this end we would ask you to forward this message, through your assistant governors or by other means, to all club presidents. There may be a club with some Rotarians who would like to become involved in a project in Africa, or Rotarians who would like to attend this event.

I might add that Cape Town is a favoured destination for travelers from all over the world, from nearby big game parks to an unsurpassed wine country. Ray's Rotary Reunions promises to be a wonderful gathering in a beautiful city, full of Rotarians from around the world for the

purpose of furthering the aims of Rotary. So we ask you as a matter of urgency – there is not much time left – to send this message to all club presidents in your district. We look forward to welcoming you all to Ray’s Rotary Reunions, 3 to 5 February 2011. Please refer to the website for registration details - http://raysrotaryreunions.weebly.com. Thank you so much.

Tjirrkarli Students give us PresentsRecently, we gave ten magnifying microscopes to the Tjirrkarli School. Friday evening they gave us two wonderful presents to show their appreciation: a calendar full of photos taken by the students and a goanna carved from wood with burnt markings.

Principal, Ms Brigitte Bleys, wrote in the calendar, “To the Freshwaterbay Rotary Club in thanks for the great microscopes which the students love to use”.

Tjirrkalri remote campus is part of the Ngaanyatjarra School. This school situated in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands in the Western Desert (see map) is the result of a shared responsibility agreement between the Ngaanyatjarra people and the Department of Education and Training. It is a unique school consisting of ten remote campuses operating as “One School”.

Goannas have a prominent place in the culture of indigenous Australians, acting as a special emblem to some t r i b e s , p r o v i d i n g representations in dreamtime stories, and as a food source. There are around 30 species of goanna, 25 of which are found in Australia.
