Don’t talk politics or religion in polite company, the old saying goes.

One of those topics will be anything but off-limits in a new small group this fall called Starting Point, which aims to offer a place for anyone with questions about God, Jesus, the Bible or Christianity to seek answers.

Why do bad things happen to good people? What exactly is baptism all about? What does it mean to have a personal relationship with Jesus?

Starting Point serves to answer questions like these, and any others that participants have, during weekly classes that cover subjects from creation through eternity. The group is driven by conversation — not lectures or sermons.

The weekly meetings, which will take place Sabbaths at 10:30 a.m., are meant to give people “a safe place to ask questions and to not have the answer to everything — to learn more about this Jesus guy,” said Season Cromwell, New Hope’s evangelism director.

Cromwell will lead the small group with Nathan Taylor and Lindsay Kerr. The class is geared toward people who are simply curious about God, starting a new relationship with Jesus or just getting back into church.

New Hope plans to offer it regularly in the fall and spring, Cromwell said.

God’s Daily WordUse the following passages to explore what the Bible says about loving the unlovable.

SUNDAY 1 John 4:19; Ephesians 5:1,2

MONDAY 1 John 4:9-12

TUESDAY Mark 12:30-31

WEDNESDAY 1 John 4:20-21

THURSDAY 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

FRIDAY 1 Peter 3:14

Twice a week we would have to call the police to have Ralph moved from the entrance of the medical center. He would be sleeping on the sidewalk leading to the front door. He was dirty, he stank, flies would hover over his crusty scalp, and his pant zipper would often be open as he laid spread eagle. He had become a nuisance and a headache that I, as Director of Operations, had to contend with on the busiest of mornings.

For years, Ralph was considered “a friendly homeless,” living the streets surrounding North Capitol Street, four blocks from the Capitol Building. But, as alcohol slowly took over, Ralph became belligerent and obnoxious. He started to become a danger to others and to himself. At times, the guards would find him with bleeding open wounds on his hands and face. Something needed to be done and I was given the responsibility for finding someone who would take Ralph away.

One day as I walked to a nearby deli for lunch, I saw one of our new employees, Phyllis, kneeling beside Ralph. He was passed out on the sidewalk in his usual position. I said to Phyllis, “That’s Ralph. He drives us crazy. Just ignore him.” On this particular day, Ralph was especially odorous and I cautioned Phyllis not to get too close.

Upon leaving the deli, I again saw Phyllis kneeling beside Ralph. This time she had her arm around him, propping him up to a sitting position. She was feeding him a sandwich and talking to him. Ralph was hungrily devouring the

food. After the sandwich was consumed, Phyllis put a cup of water to his mouth and Ralph slurped up the water like a thirsty animal. Then as Phyllis began to stand up, Ralph grabbed her hand and pulled her back down to her knees. I was startled and began to hurry toward Phyllis to rescue her from him. Then I abruptly stopped. The scene before me brought tears to my eyes. Ralph held his dirty hand up to Phyllis’ face and was gently patting her cheek. His eyes brimmed with tears. Phyllis reached out and patted Ralph’s cheek in the same manner and said, “you are welcome, Ralph.”

Walking back into the medical center, I asked Phyllis how she was going to wash off Ralph’s stench that was clinging to her clothes. She looked at me with a gentle smile and said, “Ann, until we learn to love those that are hardest to love, we will always smell the stench.”

“I’m telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. . .This is what God does. He gives his best—the sun to warm and the rain to nourish—to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty. Live generously and graciously toward others, the way God lives toward you.” Matthew 5:46-48, The Message.

For the Family1. As a family memorize 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. As you memorize it have a discussion about what

this means and looks like within your family.

2. This week use the verses in the Daily Word as your daily family Bible reading.

Weekly ChallengeHow do we love that son or daughter, father or mother, husband or wife, neighbor or fellow employee who returns insults, condemnation and hostility for love. What do we do? Do we give up emotionally or declare it’s impossible to love those that would despitefully use us and persecute us with their bad attitudes and constant insults? Read 1 John 4 and allow God to reveal the answer to these questions.
