PRESENTATION: HIV disproportionately affects people who use both injecting and non-injecting drugs. We will explore the reasons for this and examine how this global epidemic continues to change on a number of fronts.  We will examine how the AIDS epidemic has changed since the world first became aware of this disease in the 1980's. A framework for more accurately assessing will be provided and accompanied by the most recent available knowledge about the relative risk of specific sexual and drug using behaviors. A focus will be placed on strategies used to help those we are entrusted to serve be able to take action to decrease the likelihood of becoming infecting; transmitting HIV to other people; and accessing care & treatment. As a result of this webinar participants will be able to:

1.       Learn about HIV risk associated with sexual behaviors and substance use2.       Gain knowledge about HIV prevention methods3.       Understand the impact of HIV on the individual and community

PRESENTER: James Agostinho Figueiredo, Ed.M., is the Director of the Training & Education Program at the Justice Resource Institute in Boston.. He holds a Master’s Degree in Education from Harvard University. For over 10 years, he has worked in the HIV field as an educator, hotline screener, outreach worker, counselor, case manager, and program manager. He conducts trainings internationally to help raise the skill levels of educators and counselors in the HIV field. Mr. Figueiredo is the principal author of over 30 curricula that have been commissioned and/or implemented by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Harvard University, South Africa National Department of Health, and Boston Medical Center.
