Mayor Matilde “Matti” Bower was first elected to the Miami Beach
Commission in November 1999. She was elected as the first female and
first Hispanic Mayor in 2007. It was just the latest in a long series of firsts
for this tenacious community activist. Mayor Bower started out more than
30 years ago as a PTA mom, fighting to save an elementary school in
danger of closing. She also joined the fight to save the historic Art Deco
District in South Beach, which led her into yet another battle to
help create decent affordable housing for the elderly and young families.
Throughout her career, Mayor Bower has used her passion to empower
all residents in this diverse community. As Mayor, she has expanded that mission to include protecting
and promoting the economic vitality of Miami Beach, so that all can prosper together. She co-founded
UNIDAD of Miami Beach, Inc. and was involved in giving a start to the New Generation Leadership
and Workforce Institute. Mayor Matti Bower is always our honored guest, and a notable example of
exemplary leadership.

Danya and Daniela Pelaez, Directors of We Are Here Foundation Inc.
We Are Here Foundation, a non-profit organization, began
after two sisters, Dayana and Daniela Pelaez, were on the
brink of being deported from the United States by
Immigration authorities. At the time Daniela was an 18
year old student with a grade point average of 6.72 and
was North Miami High School’s Valedictorian. Their story
caught the attention of the media across the country, as
well as internationally. Thus began a national movement
towards the legalization of outstanding students based
We Are Here Foundation on their merits. As a result of
their experience, the sisters decided to create We Are Here Foundation to be able to provide support
and help to other teenagers with any kind of legal and/or economic assistance and most importantly
emotional help, during the extensive and often arduous immigration process. We Are Here Foundation
was formed to educate the immigrant student community in Florida and the rest of the nation about
the legal rights of immigrants in the U.S. The organization raises funds to provide scholarships and
grants, as well as legal and psychological support.
