  • Employability and Graduate Attributes in the Curriculum

    Information and ideas pack

  • Embedding employability and graduate attributes in the curriculum The Imperial Careers Service is developing a series tools to support departments in their curriculum review. This is an ongoing process and we would like to work with you to ensure that what we develop is practical and useful both for this initial review and for ongoing processes.

Below is a summary of some contextual information along with a menu of offerings, some which are already being utilised by different departments and others that can be developed to meet specific course needs. This is by no means an exhaustive list and is designed to begin a conversation of how we can best support both your curriculum review and our students to ensure they develop into successful graduates.

The Graduate Outcomes SurveyDestinations of Higher Education (DHLE) survey is currently its final cycle of collection and will be replaced by the new Graduate Outcomes Survey in 2018. All Imperial graduates will be contacted 15 months post-graduation to find out what they are doing. This data will be collected by HESA and will feed into league tables, TEF and other measures of how successful our university is. The first collection will take place in August 2019.Imperial is currently developing further guidance on the implementation of this new survey which will be released as it becomes finalised.

Changes to TEF (Teaching Excellence and Student Outcomes Framework)As of October 2017, the metric originally named Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) was expanded to include student outcomes to better reflect how it is calculated. The value of the National Student Survey (NSS) results have been halved and supplemented in part by the results from the Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO) which measures both salary and employment of graduates three years post-graduation. This is known as graduate inflation.

Imperial should continue to provide strong data with this change however this highlights the importance of supporting our students not just while they are at university but the need to train them to flourish in their longer term career goals, whatever they may be.

Proposed Employability statementIn response to the above changes, The Careers Service is proposing an employability statement, based on our graduate attributes, to support departments and students in their future development. This is designed to be aspirational and all feedback is welcome.

Imperial College London will use our strong research focus along with innovative, inclusive teaching to equip our students and graduates with the knowledge, skills, attributes and understanding to succeed. We will instil in them the confidence to continue to develop after graduation and adapt to their changing world through reflecting on their experiences. As a university, we are committed to increasing student’s opportunities to access as many experiences as possible both within our curriculum and through extracurricular activities. Our graduates will be valuable additions to the Imperial network, the global economy and community, embodying our graduate attributes.
