We want to hear from you! Ecology is overseeing cleanup of contamination on and off the Boeing Auburn Fabrication property.

To clean up the facility, Boeing must have a special permit, called a Corrective Action Permit. They have operated under a Corrective Action Permit since April 2006. This permit now needs to be reissued. This is a procedural matter, not a result of any new development on the site.

feasibility study, cleanup plan, cleanup design, cleanup implementation, and monitoring and site use controls. We are currently in the feasibility study phase. Interim actions or partial cleanups can occur at any time. There will be opportunities for public comment at each stage, except for cleanup implementation.

Figure 1. Diagram of cleanup process

Current levels of contamination During the first phase of cleanup, we required Boeing to test places where people could come into contact with contaminated groundwater migrating into surface water or impacting air quality. Boeing tested the following in parts of commercial Algona and Auburn, and residential Algona:

    • Water in ditches and creeks • Indoor air

Under parts of Auburn and Algona, the groundwater is contaminated with:

    • Trichloroethene (TCE), a chemical degreaser • Volatile organic compounds from the breakdown of TCE

Contamination likely originated from the Boeing Auburn facility. The contaminated groundwater, or plume, flows north and northwest away from the Boeing property under portions of southwest Auburn and northeast Algona.

In the remedial investigation, we consistently found chemical levels were either undetectable or low enough they do not pose a risk to human health.

Proposed cleanup methods In 2015, Boeing began a pilot study to test a cleanup method called bioremediation. This method uses bacteria that already live in the soil to break down chemical contamination. Field technicians injected a non-toxic food for bacteria into groundwater wells in the Algona commercial district. This food was intended to increase the population of bacteria and therefore increase the bacteria’s speed of breaking down chemicals.

The results showed that bioremediation does reduce contamination in the groundwater. We will consider bioremediation as one of the possible cleanup methods. Cleanup methods will be proposed in an upcoming feasibility study report. There will be an opportunity for public comment on the proposed cleanup methods when the report is available.

Public Hearing If we receive 10 or more requests, we will schedule a public hearing. To request a hearing, contact Robin Harrover at [email protected] or 425-649-7232. If a hearing is scheduled, the public will be notified by postcard; by an ad in The Auburn Reporter newspaper; and on the Ecology website on the Boeing Auburn cleanup site page and on the public involvement calendar.
