Who Knew: Lara Lewisby Susan Smart

Lara Lewis was born in Wash-ington D.C., and raised in Fairfax County, where she went to school. She wanted to join the Navy and be a nurse, but her aunt talked her out of it, so she went to Germana College for a time. Lara worked full-time at Dominion Bank while attending

high school. Through several mergers, she spent a combined twenty-three years, she transitioned from banking to investments, ending her financial career as a licensed financial advisor. Throughout her working career she enjoyed using her skills in service to clients.

Lara’s love for people, specifically seniors, made her transition from investments into senior living an easy one. Prior to working for Chancellor’s Village, her grandparents came to her to help them transition into assisted living. She didn’t look for a job at Chancellor’s Village, it came looking for her. When she applied for the job in sales and marketing at Chancellor Village she felt like a door had opened and she accepted the job. Lara spent three years with them, when she applied for the position at Falls Run as Activities Director.

When asked how the two places were different, she said people here are much more active than at Chancellor’s Village, but also said there were some similarities. For one, the love for neighbors that is evident at both places and second, for the willingness to step in and help others. And Lara loves it here so far.

Lara has four children ranging in age from 18 to 28 – who would have guessed? – and she also has three grandchildren. She loves dogs and mermaid parapher-nalia, in case you haven’t been in her office! In the future she’d like to complete her degree, and also to take piano lessons. We’re pleased she was willing to join our community.

New Year 2017by Judy Rao

A new year has arrived! We meet it with promises That we didn't keep last year. But hope is there for a miraculous cure.

Maybe if my resolution list is shorter, I could manage one or two. There must be one that I could do. First I'll promise to get lots of sleep and, Second I promise to never make resolutions again!

For when you are retired There should be no strain. We sing our favorite song "Que Sera, Sera" And love the sweet refrain.

We leave the worries to our kids They will run the world now. Their careers are climbing to the top, They just call us Mom and Pop

I like this arrangement – We help them when we can. But when the cruise ship leaves the dock We are off to far-away lands.

So 2017 should be a good year, Maybe we’ll find some cures. But I’m just watching and not stressing As new officials keep on messing With our lives.

New Year’s Resolutions #2 and 3: I will learn what the word “resolution” means.

I will start buying lottery tickets at a luckier store.

BakedPotatoSoupwithCrispyPotatoSkins

Ingredients:2 ½lb russet potatoes (about 5 medium)3 tablespoons butter, melted¼ tsp salt6 slices bacon, cut into 1/2 inch pieces1 medium onion, chopped (1/2 cup)4 tablespoons all-purpose flour½ tsp dried thyme leaves¼ tsp pepper1 32 oz. carton Progresso chicken stock (4 cups)1 cup heavy whipping cream2 cups shredded medium cheddar cheese (8 oz.)6 tablespoons sour cream6 tablespoons thinly sliced green onions

Directions:Heat oven to 400 degrees. Scrub potatoes clean, prick each a few time with fork. Bake directly on rack in center of oven 60 min or until tender. Cool 10 minutes. Increase oven temperature to 450 degrees. Cut each potato in half; scrape potatoes out of skins into bowl, leaving ¼ inch shell. Mash potatoes with fork or masher and set aside. Brush shells inside and out with melted butter and sprinkle with salt. Cut each shell in half lengthwise, and then into ½ inch strips crosswise. Place on cookie sheet; bake about 20 min or until golden and crispy then set aside. Meanwhile in a 4 quart Dutch oven, cook bacon over medium-high heat until crispy. Remove bacon with slotted spoon and set aside. Decrease heat to medium and add onions. Cook 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasion-ally, until tender. Add 3 tablespoons of the flour, thyme leaves and pepper, cook 1 to 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Beat in chicken stock and mashed potatoes with whisk and heat to boiling. Reduce heat to low, simmer 30 minutes and stir in cream while simmering. In medium bowl, toss 1 1/2 cups of the cheese with remaining 1 tablespoon of flour. Add cheese mixture, 1/2 cup at a time, until cheese is melted and soup is smooth after each addition. Use a ladle to serve soup into bowls. Garnish with remaining cheese, sour cream, green onions, bacon, crispy potato skins and enjoy!

A Little-Known Factby Dee Roppo The movie “Loving” is about Richard and Mildred Loving and their interracial marriage, which was against the law in Virginia at the time (1958). Their case went all the way to the Supreme Court in 1967, where the judges ruled unan-imously in their favor! Richard was my 2nd cousin (my maternal grandfather's brother's son).

I had called to inquire about being an 'extra' in the movie, but appli-cations had been cut off just the weekend prior. I saw the movie on Thanksgiving weekend and there was a couple with their little girl sitting two seats away from me. The father said she was an extra in the movie. How ironic! Sure enough, she came on the screen!

But that isn’t all. At the conclusion of the movie, as I stood to put on my coat, I noticed a number of people seated in the row behind me who appeared to be together. One lady leaned forward and said to me, “See that gentleman on the aisle seat, that’s Bernie Cohen.” Mr. Cohen was one of the two lawyers who took on this case and WON! I couldn't get to him fast enough. I shook his hand and said “Mr. Cohen, it is truly an honor to meet you,” and I explained my relationship to Richard, and that I grew up knowing of their plight. He smiled widely, cupped my hand between his hands and said, “It's my pleasure to meet you, too!”

I could have gone to any number of theaters on any other day, but I chose that theater, on that Saturday and for that particular showing time. It was meant to be! So happy for this Loving’ marriage. No doubt it was true love!

The array of costumes was unique and you could approach anyone asking yourself “Who is this?” There were Mickey and Minnie Mouse, the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts, a Candy Kiss, a Green-Headed Pumpkin, a Dancing Chicken, the Good Humor Man, the Shotgun Wedding, and the Cry Babies looking for “da-da.”

New Year’s Resolution #4: This year, every time a telemarketer calls me I will hand the phone to my 4-year-old grand-child and tell him it's Santa.

In The Junk Drawerby Barbara Chadwick

New Year’s is a time for renewal, for new thoughts and resolutions.

You will never be sorry--

for thinking before acting,

for hearing before judging,

for forgiving your enemies,

for being candid and frank,

for helping a fallen brother,

for being honest in business,

for thinking before speaking,

for being loyal to your church,

for standing by you principles,

for stopping your ears from gossip,

for bridling a slanderous tongue,

for harboring only pure thoughts,

for sympathizing with the afflicted,

for being courteous and kind to all.

Quilting Groupby Elizabeth Clements

Beginning in January, the Falls Run Quilting group will be meeting at the Center on the first Saturday of each month at 10AM. Lara Lewis is the contact person. The group will be mentored by former resident Eric King who is an enthusiastic accomplished quilter.

Participants bring projects and share hints and ideas for their completion. Quilters of all levels are welcome, even those who have never quilted and would like to learn. Plans call for classes and seminars, participation in quilting quests and attendance at Quilt Expos.

Quilting is a solitary endeavor. Getting together with others having the same interest is a learning experience for all. Come join in the fun.

Are You Part of This Global Pandemic?by Connie Block

According to the “Physical Activity 2016: Progress and Challenges” article in the September 24, 2016 issue of The Lancet medical journal, the public health challenge of inactivity is a “global pandemic of similar proportions to that of smoking.” This pandemic is responsible for over 5 million deaths each year.

Where are you on the activity scale? Consider this a wake-up nudge to incorporate some regular exercise into your week – after all, at Falls Run you can choose from a plethora of activities or work out on your own in the fitness center or the swimming pool. Groups play bocce ball, billiards, ping-pong, pickle ball, Wii bowling and tennis while individuals join together for Tai Chi/Qi Jong, water aerobics and strength training sessions.

A major research endeavor consisting of 16 studies examined the associations of sedentary behavior and physical activity with mortality. Walking, leisure time and recreational physical activities (including exercise and sports) were recalculated into physical activity energy expenditure.

The studies showed that high levels of physical activity, (60-75 minutes of moderate physical activity per day), "seem to eliminate the increased mortality risks associated with high total sitting time.” This amount of activity is more than many of us manage regularly. There is encouraging information though. “…even in those [with less] physical activity (about 25 – 35 minutes of moderate intensity activity per day), there were smaller increases in mortality risks

associated with high sitting time than were seen in the least active group (about 5 minutes per day).”

The researchers noted that the effect of TV-viewing on mortality seemed stronger. Possible explanations are that prolonged sitting after dinner may be particu-larly detrimental for metabolism. Also, breaking up sitting time may happen more often during the day than when settled in front of the TV during the evening hours.

Take an after-dinner stroll, sign up for a group activity or challenge yourself to do something physically active multiple times per week. We want to model healthy behavior for our children and grandchildren – not contribute to a global pandemic.

January Horoscopeby Barbara Pixley

Capricorn: December 22-January 19 The Goat: an earth sign

Earth signs tend to be practical. Capricorns usually appear serious, focused on goals, persistently reaching the top. When in school, they thought they were the teacher or spent time debating an Aquarius on whether aliens exist. These high climbing goats can be stub-born but also cute. When home alone they watch Netflix. They don't like bad haircuts or people who leave the cap off the toothpaste. They begin to 'chill out' when they reach their 50's. They prefer home-cooked meals, and their favorite dessert is banana pudding. On their birthday this year, they may have a craving for orange Gatorade.
