Keynote speakers: John Nichol - RAF Navigator captured by the Iraqis during the Gulf War. Author, Broadcaster and Motivational Business Speaker
John Nicol describes himself as "an ordinary guy who just happened to find himself in extraordinary circumstances". As a Royal Air Force Tornado Navigator, John was shot down during the first Gulf war in Iraq in 1991. Captured and tortured, he was paraded on TV provoking worldwide condemnation and providing one of the most enduring images of the conflict. John's inspiring and electrifying story takes his audience on an incredible journey from the highly organised training and teamwork of an RAF squadron, to the unbelievable challenges of being shot down and held as a prisoner-of-war. His experiences qualify him to speak with unquestionable authority on not only surviving challenges, but also turning them to your advantage. John's message is one of optimism, inspiration and personal motivation. His personal triumph lies in having discovered his potential to cope with extremes and achieve goals way beyond his perceived horizons. And John leaves his audience in now doubt – that potential exists in us all
Nick Looby Inspirational Speaker, Author and Communications specialist
Nick Looby has been delighting audiences for over a decade with his impactful humour, focused observation and his power to inspire action. He has a potent and unique approach to communication which will not only alter the way you think, but, more importantly, transform the way you act. He has inspired even the most diverse audience to take action; to think smarter, to change behaviours and to achieve greater personal and business success through the power of enhanced communication. He recently appeared on the Business Intelligence show on SKY TV, reaching an even wider audience with his communication insights. We become what we focus on and Nick Looby will unleash in you the clarity and enthusiasm to drive your potential to unforeseen heights.

Designation of Peer Support Teachers (PST)
This information leaflet is for those colleagues who are interested in being designated as a PST as well as their headteachers and/or line managers.
What is a Peer Support Teacher? PSTs are teachers who have shown to be leading practitioners in their own schools and are keen to share their skills, knowledge and understanding with other colleagues. Typically, PSTs share their expertise by demonstrating their pedagogy in their own setting, rather than visiting other schools. A usual visit consists of a session’s observation, focussing on a previously agreed area. Then, the PST spends the following session de-briefing and observing a colleague or colleagues, using coaching skills where necessary.
PSTs will: have excellent interpersonal skills
be able to work sensitively and collaboratively with others
have a commitment to supporting the development of other teachers & school improvement
understand what outstanding teaching and learning looks like and help other teachers to achieve it in their own context
The PST role focuses on improving other teachers’ pedagogy so that they can improve outcomes for pupils in local schools. This will be achieved primarily by allowing colleagues from other schools observe and discuss their practice. PSTs can come from any school or academy, including nursery, primary, secondary, special, pupil referral unit, independent, free schools and sixth form colleges. Whilst the individual must be outstanding, his or her school does not have to be.
How it works Teaching schools are responsible for the recruitment, designation, brokerage, deployment and quality assurance of PSTs. Each teaching school has a number of PSTs that it is responsible for. Teaching school alliances may choose to network and join their PSTs together to offer an even wider range of expertise. Visits will be organised on a needs basis. The number and organisation of these visits will depend on the context of the school/teacher receiving the support. Visits will be agreed between all parties prior to taking place and the capacity of both the PST’s school and the PST will be given consideration.
Headteacher Support The support of the applicant’s Headteacher is a key element of the eligibility criteria and application process. Applicants who apply for the programme must have the support and agreement of their headteacher, who will confirm that the school has the capacity to release them. The headteacher will act as the applicant’s referee and will complete a reference section in the application form.
Annex E
Funding and support The role is financed directly between schools involved. Each half day session in the PSTs school is chargeable at the rate determined by the alliance. This will typically involve an observation during the first half session followed by an hour’s discussion of the practice and some suggestions to develop the visiting teachers practice.

What are the benefits to the PST and their school? It is an excellent form of continuing professional development (CPD)
It enhances knowledge, skills and abilities to further improve their current role and influences others
It can support schools' internal succession planning strategies by enabling individuals to demonstrate they are ready to step up to the next leadership level
Skills such as coaching and mentoring that PSTs develop can be used to support colleagues in their own school
It can re-energise and motivate both the PST and, through dissemination of learning, other staff
We know that system leaders benefit from knowing they are helping others to improve and having a positive impact on outcomes for children, by using and sharing their own knowledge and skills. It is this sense of moral purpose that can often prove to be the biggest incentive of all.
Designation and re-designation PSTs will be initially designated until July 2019. At this time all PSTs will be asked to re-designate for quality assurance reasons.
