NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
This ancient Irish folk song is named after the town of
Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland. The origins of the song are
unclear, but it has been traced back to an old Gaelic song, “There
was a Noblewoman,” circa 1745. The Irish lyrics were about a man in
a bawdy and humorous ditty. By contrast, the English lyrics are
nostalgic. Historians suggest Carrickfergus may have evolved from
these two separate songs, which would explain why it doesn’t have a
consistent narrative.
The song is a popular request at folk festivals and concerts,
and was played at the 1999 funeral of John F. Kennedy, Jr. Most
recently, it appeared in the closing credits of HBO’s Boardwalk
Empire.

Beautiful, nostalgic, and lush, this intimate arrangement of a
traditional Irish tune is an excellent tool to teach phrasing and
