MESSAGE FROM RABBI GRABER
V’nahafoch Hu
“And so, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month—that is, the month of Adar—when the king’s command and decree were to be executed, the very day on which the enemies of the Jews had expected to get them in their power, the opposite happened, and the Jews got their enemies in their power” (Esther 9:1)
The story of Purim is a tale of the unexpected becoming reality. An orphaned Jewish woman who should have had no future becomes Queen. Haman, the bad guy, tries to set up his rival Mordochai to be hung from a tree, and instead Mordochai is paraded through the streets as a hero and Haman is hung. The 13th of Adar was supposed to be the day of the global extermination of the Jews, but instead “the opposite happened” and the Jews successfully fought off those who would harm them.
This important theme is encapsulated in the phrase “V’nahafoch hu - the opposite happened”. This phrase carries a connotation of flipping something upside down, hafuch in Hebrew. One of Purim’s main lessons for us is that in life sometimes our plans can be flipped upside down.
As I reflect on last Purim being the last time we sat side by side in synagogue, the notion that our plans for life can be upended in an instant certainly rings true. Plans for work, school, vacation, holidays, and even simple plans like going grocery shopping were turned on their heads.
But the lesson of V’nahafoch hu applies not only to circumstances, but also to mentality. In the same way that good plans can be flipped, negative attitudes can also be overturned. Despite the immense challenges of the past year, positive things which could never have happened otherwise have come to fruition as an unlikely reality.
Who would have dreamed that our community would have a Drive in Megillah Reading? Or that so much of our population would gain the computer skills to join services online? So much that was unimaginable a year ago has become reality and proven a silver lining in a dark cloud. The difficulties are real and painful, just as Mordochai knew when he mourned in the public square at the coming genocide of the Jews. But he and Esther did not let the expected reality deter them from shaping their future as best they could, and they succeeded.
One thing about being turned upside down is that it gives you a different perspective.
I hope that this month, and this Purim we can also flip our perspective and find the victories and joys that hide behind struggle, triumphantly shouting in the face of harsh reality, “V’nahafoch hu - Let’s turn it around”

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT MIKE BACKELMAN Purim is the holiday that we as parents and Jewish educators always seem to point to
when our kids get caught up in the secular world of Halloween or Christmas celebrations. “Don’t worry,” we say, “we have our own joyous holiday where you can get dressed up and eat and drink and have fun too – it’s called Purim.” I don’t know that many of our kids bought the equivalency (I don’t think I do either, BTW), but it was our way of saying that Judaism also has its fun, “let loose” holidays. It’s a counterbalance to the solemnity of Yom Kippur or Tisha B’Av, a time when we can get a little crazy with our celebrations – our Purim shpiels and carnivals, giving out Shaloch Manos, eating and drinking and singing and partying while wearing costumes.
And yet it wasn’t until adulthood that I really took any notice of Purim. I didn’t really celebrate it as a kid (other than in Hebrew school), and it wasn’t really on my radar until after I graduated college. Even then, it was a gradual acclimation. Lisa and I were married in March 1992, only a couple of days after Purim. I read the Haftarah for Shabbos Zachor at my aufruf, not really paying much attention to either its meaning or the upcoming holiday. Two years later, our oldest son Joshua was born on Purim, although again I can’t say that I paid much attention to the presence of the holiday.
Fast forward to March 2007. Josh read the Haftarah for Shabbos Zachor at his Bar Mitzvah on Shabbos morning, we celebrated with a big kiddush in the afternoon, and then we all returned to shul that evening to celebrate Purim with our NCJC community. Lisa even made me wear a “real” costume (for those of you who know me, this was NOT in my normal comfort zone!). We were all still on a high from celebrating Josh’s Bar Mitzvah, which made our Purim celebration even more memorable!
By this time, our family had become very involved at NCJC, and Purim was a holiday
that we celebrated religiously (I guess the pun’s intended). Lisa (in my opinion) makes the best Hamentashen in the world, and a normal sight in our kitchen / dining room in the week before Purim would be Lisa baking dozens and dozens of them, while the kids and I laid out bags to be filled in a factory line manner with all kinds of goodies. On Purim, the kids would go with me as we drove around the community giving out Shaloch Manos packages to our friends, often returning home to find many of our friends had stopped by to do the same.
And so, for all of these reasons, Purim will always be a special holiday for me. It is a time of both personal and communal celebration, and I very much look forward to celebrating it every year with my family and my NCJC community.
I wish you all a very happy, joyous Purim! Mike

CHESED CALLERS
What does it mean to be a part of a “caring community” and how can we create this type of community within our synagogue? In responding to these questions, the Gemilut Chesed Committee is pleased to be launching a new response team called the “Chesed Callers”. Our Chesed Callers are a group of people who make phone calls with compassion and love for those members of our congregation who could use a little kindness.
If you, yourself, would benefit from the helping hands of our team, or know someone else who would, please be in touch with us! We thank you, in advance, for the opportunity to do such an important mitzvah!!
You can reach us at NCJC ‐ Chesed Callers ‐ 845‐638‐9600

Hebrew School Director
Chag Purim, Chag Purim, lai lai lai….. Yes-you guessed it! Purim is almost here! Get ready, friends. It is time to celebrate! Our rabbis teach us that the month of Adar is for joy and celebration. It has been a long winter. So let’s turn things around, or in Purim speak, change things up and bring in the joy!
If you’re hankering for Hamantaschen-Sisterhood has you covered, sign up for their virtual Hamantaschen bake on Sunday, February 21st --YUM.
Did you hear? Masks are in this year! Some of us might have forgotten that MASKS CAN BE FUN! It’s almost time to get creative and decorate masks! We have re-imagined the ever-popular costume parade! If you thought you’d miss out this year-no worries. We’ve got you! Join us with your friends at dusk on Purim for a drive in Costume Parade and short Purim movie. Show off that mask and costume when you walk the Shushan Runway! Mark your calendars for this event: Thursday, February 25th at 5:00 p.m.
I know it can be hard to get super excited with all that is still happening in our world. But it is our job together to fill our barrel with wine. We must work collectively to bring the spirit and joy that we are seeking. Purim not only provides us with this opportunity, it encourages us to celebrate. Purim challenges us to put aside the sad and raise up the happy. So, I am challenging all of us to do so. Let us bring in the joy!
Chag Purim Sameach!

Jackie Binstock, Director
FEBRUARY 2021
January and (this year) February bring two holidays that we usually don’t contrast to one another – Martin Luther King Day and Purim. They seem to be totally unrelated. We don’t even think of them in the same thought process, as we might Purim and Passover. Yet this year, they have come into my mind together in relation to the nursery school.
When we talk about MLK Day with the children, we read about Dr. King’s story and about the United States before and during the (ongoing) civil rights movement. We talk about acceptance of others. All are welcome here. What does that mean to small children? It can mean that one child takes longer than others to finish a project, or that someone needs help from the teacher with writing their name. And that’s OK. It can mean that someone has to have a certain bike in the gym because they can’t pedal the others. And that’s OK. It may mean that someone needs help getting their jacket zipped or needs help with the potty. And that’s OK. It may mean that someone eats different food for snack. And that’s OK. No one says “That’s not fair” or complains about the teachers giving more attention to someone else, because we learn in nursery school that what’s fair is giving each child what they need, when they need it. Rules are often flexible, depending on the situation, other than things like “no hitting”. The one hard and fast rule is Always Be Kind.
When we get to Purim, everything is different. Things are secret, hidden. (As you all very well know, there are NO secrets in nursery school!) We wear masks – this year in a very different way! Not everyone is welcome in Shushan. There is cruelty and mayhem. And yet we persevere and overcome. In that way, the stories are not so very different. We teach the children that you always stand up for what you believe in, no matter how difficult. Esther was afraid to go to the king unbidden. Mordechai knew the consequences of not bowing down to Haman. In that way the two holidays have many similarities in their messages. Just as Dr. King stood up and fought for what he believed in, so too did Esther and Mordechai many centuries before. These are some of the essential lessons that we teach in nursery school. Everyone counts. It’s OK to be different. Fairness doesn’t mean that everyone gets the same thing – fairness means that everyone gets what they need. When you believe in something, protect it, fight for it, even if you’re afraid. You can do it. Everyone makes a difference. And be kind – Always Be Kind.

CEMETERY PLOTS AVAILABLE THROUGH NCJC
“It is an ancient Jewish custom to purchase a gravesite during one’s lifetime and to own it outright prior to burial. The Bible states explicitly that Abraham brought a grave for Sarah. Likewise, Joseph was buried in the family plot that his father Jacob had acquired in the city of Shechem”. (from the Jewish Way in Death and Mourning by Maurice Lamm)
Have you put off arranging your final resting place because you just don’t want to deal with the details? Allow us to assist you making this an easy process with minimal hassle. New City Jewish Center currently has numerous plots avail‐ able for purchase at Gates of Zion Cemetery located at 670 Saddle River Road in Monsey. Additionally, in comparison to other area cemeteries the cost is more reasonable and the check is made payable to NCJC.
For further details or to make an appointment to schedule a personal tour of available plots please call our cemetery chairperson Jay Shaffer at 845‐634‐5697.
