A Food Hygiene – CIEH Level 2 course will run at Dean Bank Literary Institute in Ferryhill on Friday 20th May from 9.30am – 4.30pm. This course is ideal for anyone who is handling, preparing or cooking food that is served to the public and also those who are advising and helping the public to make food related purchases and to prepare food. The course will help you to understand and meet your duties under the Food Standards Agency ‘Safer Food Better Business’ initiative. It will be tailored to suit the voluntary sector i.e. catering in community settings. The trainer can advise during the course on setting up your food safety system and will be happy to answer any food related questions. This is a one day course and the teaching lasts 6 hours. It covers the importance of the four C’s – Cooking, Cleaning, Chilling and Cross Con- tamination, along with the records you need to keep. You’ll also be given a ‘Safer Food Better Business’ pack to take away with you. The course will finish with a 30 question multiple choice test, but don’t worry – you’ll be given plenty of support and opportunity to practice and prepare! This is an accredited course and upon completion you will be given a CIEH/ HABC certificate, which is nationally recognised and valid for three years. It costs £20 per person (usually over £50 but CAVOS will meet part of the costs) and refresh- ments and a buffet lunch will be provided. Contact CAVOS on 01388 811 115 or email [email protected]. uk for a place, booking is essential. The course will teach you all about food hygiene. Gardeners and allotment holders in Ferryhill and Chilton are being urged to secure their homes, gardens and sheds from springtime thieves. With summer approaching, police are urging people to take a few simple steps to improve the security of their property. "Overall crime across the force area is significantly down on last year. But when the warmer days and nights arrive, we often see an unwelcome increase in the number of opportunist burglaries," said PC Don Luke. "Nearly half of all burglaries in County Durham take place when a door or window has been left open, a figure even higher than the national average. "A burglar only needs to spot an open window, or an unlocked door or gate to make their move. They can be in and out in seconds, with handbags, purses, Keep those spring thieves at bay! wallets, and laptops their main targets. "The good news is that it doesn't take much to improve security and put them off. Money spent on realistic security is a sound investment as it will last a long time, can benefit your insurance cover and give added peace of mind," said PC Luke, a crime reduction officer. Some basic tips to increase the chances of defeating the crooks include: *Ensuring your shed is in a good state of repair and if not, avoid leaving valuable items, such as lawn mowers, cycles and power tools inside *Improving the physical security of the shed by fitting a sturdy door lock. *Fit any windows with a grille inside with non- returnable screws or coach bolts Crime prevention advice is available from the force's Neighbourhood Policing Team on 0345 60 60 365.

David Whinfield will return before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe on 17th May after matters were adjourned in order for the Probation Service to prepare a pre-sentence report. The 52 year-old of Cleves Avenue, Ferryhill, was seen leaving a public house at around 5pm on the afternoon of 10th April and driving his Renault Megane in Mainsforth Road, Ferryhill Station. On being stopped by police he was found to be over

Interim driving ban

the legal limit of alcohol.A second charge of failing to have insurance for the vehicle will be further investigated by the police after the defendant produced documentation in court. Magistrates expressed concern due to the fact that Whinfield has previous relevant convictions and gave the Probation Service steering for their report for a custodial sentence before imposing an interim driving ban with immediate effect.

Cleves Cross egg decorating winners

The annual decorated Easter egg competition took place on Friday 15th April at Cleves Cross Primary School. A very good turnout of egg decorators was on show, with judges PCSO Laura Denathorn, Glennis Martin and Christine Hall given the tough task of picking winners from a very strong field of artistic entries. After much de-liberation the winners

were chosen as: Harry Lee, Daniel Stephenson, Lily Backhouse, Conrad Morrison, Eleanor White, Tyler Marquis, Devin Gaskill and Reece Jowitt. Runners up were: Finlay B, Olivia Whitehead, Zommer Metcalf, Evan Trotter, Kyle Bromley, Jacob Wigley, Emily Bateman, Ellie Walton, Emily Hughes, Olivia Gough, Cameron B, Kate Walton, Jessica

Wood, Emily Sudgen and Jake’s dad who somehow found the cheek to enter a children’s competition!Everyone at the school is most grateful for the big effort from the staff and children, and a big thanks to the judges who helped make this year’s competi-tion one of the best so far – with eggcellent presenta-tion and an eggceptional atmosphere!

On the 11th April police were called to a domestic disturbance at Gordon Terrace in Ferryhill. There they found Colin Anthony Quinn in possession of heroin - a Class A drug. The 30 year-old, who is currently serving a community order which includes elements of drug and alcohol treatment, lives at the same address as his girlfriend. A mutual friend, named in court as Gary, had been allowed to stay with them

and on this occasion, when Quinn had returned to the premises after attending to some horses, he found that his bags had been packed by his partner, as she had discovered a quantity of heroin in the house which she thought belonged to Quinn. However, Quinn explained that the heroin belonged to Gary and he was then sent from the house. Quinn had snatched the small quantity of drugs from his girlfriend and

placed it in his pocket, and so it was that he came to be in possession when searched by the police. The 30 year-old pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to a 12 months conditional discharge. Magistrates at Newton Aycliffe ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the heroin. His offender manager feels that progress is being made with Quinn’s drug problem but he still owes the court over £400 in fines.

Local author celebrates debut novelHoward Linskey, ex-Fer-ryhill lad, is preparing for his debut book, a gritty north-east gangster crime novel, to hit the shelves at the end of this month. The 43 year old father of one enjoyed putting pen to paper to tell a story rooted in our local area.“I had always wanted to write fiction” he said, telling of how he had in-spiration for his novel ‘The Drop’ over a number of years.“I always had the idea of a hero who didn’t believe he was a gangster, because he doesn’t do all of the dirty work – he thinks he is above it all.”“I had an idea of the plot, and after writing stories set in New York and Prague, I was writing about a place I knew far better – when it’s your place you become more instinctive.”Speaking of the writing process Howard added, “It brings back memories of growing up there. It is really lovely and it is very strange in a good way.”Howard is currently working on the second novel in the trilogy, but you

Once finished the bid was submitted to the Big Lottery who assessed the application and notified the Council of its successful outcome.Kieron Hornsby from the Ferryhill Youth Council said “young people from the Ferryhill area will be thrilled that this funding bid has been successful. How to be a brilliant organisationThe Community And Voluntary Organisation Support group (CAVOS) is running a number of new courses this spring working towards improving how or-ganisations operate in our local community.A ‘How to be a brilliant or-ganisation’ daytime course will be held on Wednesday 18th May from 9.30am – 3pm at Shildon Civic Hall, with an evening course held on Monday 16th May at Dean Bank Literary Institute from 5pm – 8pm. The daytime session at Shildon will cover topics in more detail, with the evening course being designed around those who cannot attend the daytime session. The course is specifically targeted at members of management committees and charity trustees, but

anyone who is involved in a voluntary organisation or community group will find the session useful.CAVOS recently offered a pilot of this training course and the feedback was fantastic. A great deal of interest was expressed in a straight-forward course teaching general good practice and what should be done day-to-day to make sure your organisation stays on track. From volunteering and governance to marketing and promotion, there’s so much you want to know and there’s never been such a thing as a one day course that covers all the topics…until now that is! CAVOS are experts in the field of voluntary sector good practice and they are really good at telling

people how to do things well. The training will be delivered to suit the needs of the organisations taking part. The course will include interactive workshop sessions and opportuni-ties for feedback and discussion. It will be split over three topics: Good governance, Roles & responsibilities of your committee, and Attracting & keeping volunteers. This is a free course but booking is essential to make sure you don’t miss out. For more information, or to book a place on the course, contact CAVOS on 01388 811 115 or email [email protected] for a place on the course. Refreshments will be provided.
