for Victims of Abuse in First Nations Communities
D I R E C T O R Y O F
ServicesNE W BRUNSWICK
In 2016, PLEIS-NB created a publication called: New Brunswick Directory of Services for Victims of Abuse that provided a general overview of services for victims. However, it did not capture the full range and diversity of services and resources that may be available in First Nation communities. To address this, the Public Legal Education and Information Service of New Brunswick (PLEIS-NB) in collaboration with Victim Services, Public Safety, produced this informative, bilingual and largely online directory for victims of abuse in First Nation Communities.
PLEIS-NB is a non-profit, charitable organization that educates the public about the law. It is funded by Justice Canada, the New Brunswick Law Foundation and the Department of Justice and Office of the Attorney General of New Brunswick.
A fillable survey was emailed to all band councils across New Brunswick collecting information, suggestions and feedback on what should be included in the directory. We conducted research and sought input of many individuals on potential design features including Gignoo Transition House. We also consulted with the Women’s Equality Branch (ECO) and Aboriginal Affairs Secretariat. Finally, we hosted a brainstorming session (talking circle) with key stakeholders in the Miramichi region where we travelled to meet with service providers, including Domestic Violence Outreach, Aboriginal Victim Services, and the local transition house. There were participants from several nearby First Nations communities. This new Directory offers a variety of traditional services that support victims, such as drumming groups, talking circles and so on.
We wish to thank the many individuals and organizations who have contributed to the development of this directory.

Purpose of this Directory
The purpose of this directory is to help victims of intimate partner violence in First Nation communities find helpful services and programs whether they are in crisis, or over the longer term. The directory sets out a range of information and resources, both on and off reserve. However, the focus has been to identify resources available to individuals in First Nation communities across the province.
This directory provides an overview and quick access to programs and services available in New Brunswick, such as counselling, housing, legal services, and court preparation.
This directory is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all programs and services available for victims. However, we hope that it provides a helpful starting point for victims to find out about services that might help them and their children deal with the harm that has been caused by the abuse they have suffered. We realize that we may not have captured all services, and we know that resources may change over time. We will do our best to keep this directory updated.
Who should use this Directory
If you have been a victim of intimate partner violence and require help, or if you have been a victim of crime, there may be a number of services and resources that can help to get you through this stressful time. These resources are available to victims
and survivors, regardless of the timeline in their experience.
If you are looking for services to help your intimate partner end the abusive behaviour, check out ”Directory of Services for Abusive Partners”.
How to use this Directory
This directory categorizes programs and services by several broad subjects. Beneath each subject, contact information for services or programs is listed by specific location in New Brunswick. It is not necessary, however, to use the service nearest you if you prefer not to for any reason.
The directory is available as an online resource only. It does not represent a full and complete list of services and programs. As well, programs and services may be added or eliminated over time. You can search for services in New Brunswick on the PLEIS-NB website at www.legal-info-legale.nb.ca.
You should check with the band office on your reserve or service providers in your region to ask about other kinds of assistance that might be available for victims living in, or leaving, abusive relationships.
Introduction
The Internet version of this directory will be updated from time to time. If you know of a service that would be useful to include in this directory, please contact us at PLEIS-NB:

Community Justice ServicesElsipogtog First Nation205 Big Cove Road, Elsipogtog First Nation, NB E4W 2S1T: 506-523-8227
This program delivers alternative measures and community sentencing programs for youth and adults accused or convicted of committing certain criminal offences (e.g. simple assault, shoplifting, mischief, etc.).
The Program engages offenders, victims, Elders and other community members in pre-charge healing circles, and in post-conviction sentencing circles. They also provide support services for victims at risk and their families.
This support includes pre-trial preparation services and post-trial stages (e.g proceedings of a trial or the outcomes of sentence hearings, update of the final outcomes of a trial) of the Criminal Justice System. The Program also assists and prepares victims during the pre- and post-charge stages of Restorative Justice.
Restorative Justice ProgramElsipogtog First Nation205-2 Big Cove Road, Elsipogtog First Nation, NB E4W 2S1T: 506-523-4747F: 506-523-4746
The goal of this service is to create change that creates a safer community, facilitating all affected community members’ participation.
The program seeks to reconcile victims and offenders through the use of traditional sentencing circles. The offender must be prepared to hear from the victim(s), their families or supporters, which can include negative things as part of the process.
The victim can choose whether or not to have the crime dealt with through restorative justice approaches.
These services can be accessed pre-charge or post-conviction and seek to create safer communities and reconcile victims and offenders through means more community oriented than traditional justice services.
