New bottlenecks: The tangled 12 Traffic in our region can be a mess. From Mason to Taylor Mill, from Butler County to Batavia Township, new bottlenecks have been created by rapid growth, busy lifestyles and even roadwork that’s supposed to alleviate traffic troubles. We asked readers, highway engineers, traffic watchers and elected officials to name the worst offenders of daily gridlock. Here is the dirty dozen of bottlenecks that you would be wise to avoid — if you can. A B C Wayman Branch Rd. Hands Rd. TAYLOR MILL Ky. 16 (Taylor Mill Road) Clogged for years, this road is due for a major overhaul — and it’s long overdue. Residents can't wait. DRIVING TIP: Don’t even think about turning left when heading south during rush hour. Orphanage Rd. Kyles Ln. Highland Ave. Dudley Rd. Hamilton-Mason Rd. Michael A. Fox Regional Hwy. Yankee Rd. Tylersville Rd. FAIRFIELD/HAMILTON River Road entrance to Joyce Park An easy suburban drive turns to gridlock on weekends during the spring and fall youth soccer seasons. All those minivans and SUVs full of players and their families create backups that can last nearly an hour. DRIVING TIP: On soccer weekends, take Ohio 4 to head north or south. WEST CHESTER Hamilton-Mason Road at Cincinnati-Dayton Road This is what happens when new lanes are added to crowded roads: Traffic eases for a while, then backs up as more vehicles use the new roads. DRIVING TIP: For now, you're stuck with it. But turn lanes into proposed subdivisions are planned. WEST CHESTER Tylersville Road Will this road ever be free of congestion? And now, more retail and commercial developments are planned. This road proves that commuters pay the price for growth. DRIVING TIP: Give yourself an extra 10 to 20 minutes when using Tylersville Road. WILDER AA Highway at I-275 Construction kept motorists at bay for a long time. But waits to get on the interstate, especially for westbound travelers, can still be long. DRIVING TIP: When heading north through Campbell County it might be best to take U.S. 27 to I-275 and avoid this bottleneck altogether. FORT WRIGHT Ky. 17 (Madison Pike) As southern Kenton County has grown, so have traffic snarls. DRIVING TIP: With a new Wal-Mart coming, if you don't have to take this route, don't. Cox Rd. Dayton Rd. Tylersville Rd. Mason Rd. Hamilton- Cincinnati- Butler-Warren Licking River Mt. Zion Rd. Mt. Zion Rd. UNION Intersection of Mount Zion Road and U.S. 42 Relief could be coming when a rebuilt U.S. 42 opens next year. But as in other growth communi- ties the new road will bring new growth and new traffic congestion. DRIVING TIP: Traffic to and from nearby Ryle High School and Grey Middle School often is an elementary lesson in commuting. Try to stay away when classes are going in and out. Camp Ernst Rd. Conner Rd. North Bend Rd. BURLINGTON Camp Ernst and Pleasant Valley roads Twenty years ago this was a quiet country crossroads. Now, major, expensive work is needed to accommodate the rapid Boone County growth. DRIVING TIP: So many subdivisions are out this way that residents can’t really avoid the traffic. HEBRON North Bend Road north of I-275 Commercial and industrial development have followed lots of new residents. The congestion didn’t happen overnight — it just seems that way. DRIVING TIP: Stay alert. Con- gestion isn’t as big a problem as safety. GREEN TOWNSHIP Ryboldt Rd./Harrison Pike at I-74 A new shopping center that features Meijer and Kohl’s has attracted more traffic to an already busy corridor. DRIVING TIP: Evening rush hour is the worst. If you get off the highway here, you sit here. Be prepared. W esselm a n R d. Harrison Pike Ebenezer Rd. Rybolt Rd.
