…this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13b-14, NRSV
I was at a training recently where the speaker told the old joke about a farmer
and his beloved donkey. Now there was an old broken down well on his farm. Afraid that his donkey would fall into the well, the farmer always closed the gate to that pas-ture, allowing the animal to graze safely. One day, the farmer forgot to close the gate, and sure enough the donkey wandered near the old well and fell in. You could hear the animal braying and bellowing for miles. As expected, the farmer came running to his rescue. First he tried pulling the animal out with a rope, then he tried a pulley sys-tem, and finally he tried using chains attached to one of his horses. Nothing worked. At a loss for what to do, the farmer called his neighbor. As they assessed the situa-tion, the neighbor finally said, “Well, there’s only one thing left to do…you’ll just have to fill in the well and put the old boy out of his misery.” So they started shoveling dirt into the old well on top of the animal. When the first shovelful hit the donkey he brayed even louder, then he angrily shook the dirt off and stomped his feet, stomping the dirt down. The same thing occurred for the next shovelful; the donkey shook the dirt off his back, then stomped his feet. This pattern kept recurring for about four hours. Finally, when both men were worn out, the donkey calmly stepped over the side of the well to freedom.
What the speaker reminded us is that when we’re in tough situations, we have
to remember to shake things off. We shake off what doesn’t matter, and hand that off to God. When that donkey was deep in the well, I doubt if he worried too much about all the things he’d left behind. His focus was on his current situation. He just kept shaking the dirt off his back and looking ahead to the light at the top of the well that kept getting closer and closer.
This week as I met with New Beginnings small group leaders, one leader men-
tioned the dedication of her small group to discover what is pleasing to God. As we prayerfully keep our focus on Christ, shaking off all the other stuff that doesn’t matter, we press onward to answer God’s call. God has a unique ministry in mind for North-west Christian Church. Frederick Buechner writes, “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” (Buechner, Wishful Thinking: A Theological ABC) This New Beginnings process is hard work, and my prayers are with you. Thanks to each of you as you prayerfully meet, discuss, and discern how Northwest Christian Church might faithfully answer God’s call.
With Prayers and Love, Donna
Kairos
