The Womanly Art o BreasteedingLa Leche Leage believes women know best when it comes to mothering and oers accrate, sensiblereassring inormation that leaves yo to decide how to se it. The completely revised and pdated8th edition oThe Womanly Art of Breastfeeding has been reocsed and pdated or todays mothers.

Help s reach or goal o ptting this iconic book on the New York Times bestseller list by adding yopre-orders to those stacking p on or website.

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding is the book no breasteeding mom shold be withot!

Sharing SleepWorldwide and throghot history, mothers have ond that breasteeding has been made easier atnight i they take their baby into bed and eed lying down. It is not at all nsal or both mother and

baby to sleep better this way. While I was happy with the arrangement o sleeping with my babies, itwas clear to me that it was seen as a problem by others becase theyd ask, Is he sleeping throghthe night yet? Well, no he wasnt, bt we were getting plenty o sleep and his nighttime eeds werenot distrbing s. Reactions were mixed, bt there was a common thread o disapproval. Some othermothers shared with me that they too slept with their babies. I sally got the impression that thiswas something they elt they shold not be doing, or even that it was a ailre on their part not to getheir babies to sleep alone. Any ears I had were overridden by the convenience o the arrangement. Ineeded my rest and simply coldnt contemplate getting ot o bed in the night to eed the baby!

Theres something very special and relaxing abot watching yor child all asleep next to yoyorhormones play a part here and those instinctive eelings that this is something good. Research nowpoints to the potential benefts derived rom parents and inants sleeping in close proximity. In thisisse oBreastfeeding Today, Helen Ball examines the isses o sharing sleep with a breasted inant. We link to an article in which Kathleen Kendall-Tackett asks whether mothers shold avoid nighttimebreasteeding to decrease their risk or postpartm depression. There is also a review o James

    McKennas Sleeping with Your Baby.

I hope yo enjoy these articles stories, letters and news in this second isse oBreastfeeding Today.

    Good babies and sleepdevelopment

Is s/h a good baby? is a qstion

commonly posd to nw mothrs and

athrs in th arly days o parnthood.

Typically th nqirr wants to know

whthr th baby is contntd and

slps wll. Thos whos babis argood ar congratlatd. Thos whos

in which nw mothrs and athrs ar

that inant slp isss ar a sorc o

    sstaining th brastding

    rlationship ovr many months.

On way to accomplish this is or

mothr and baby to slp togthr,

allowing th inant asy accss toth mothrs brasts, and casing

    minimal slp distrbanc or th

mothr whn hr baby nds to

in th past dcad hav shown a

    vry strong and clar rlationship

    btwn brastding and bd-

    obvios onand many mothrs

rport that thy gnrally do not

    that thy nrs mor rqntly,

    and or longr priods than

    brastding inants who do not

slp nxt to thir mothrs, bt

    nonthlss rotinly bd-sharing

mothrs obtain as mch or mor

slp as thos who slp apart

    rom thir brastd babis.

    Mothrs who discovr th as

with which thy can nrs at night

    whn bd-sharing rport that thy

    contin brastding or a mch

longr dration than thy woldhav don othrwis. Whil arond

50% o uK babis hav slpt with

thir parnts at som point by th

tim thy ar thr months old,

ovr 70% o brastd babis hav

don so, compard with a third o

    babis who ar not brastd.

    Concerns aboutbed-sharing

Th qstion o whthr or not to

    bd-shar concrns many parnts.

On th on hand it acilitats

    brastding, which is good or

    both mothrs and babys halth.

On th othr hand parnts ar

    arl o accidntal smothring

    and Sddn Inant Dath Syndrom

(SIDS) whn th baby is in thir

Thr is no singl simpl mssag

appropriat or all amilis and all

th pros and cons or thir ownsitation in ordr to mak an

    by parnts and discoragd

    by halth prossionals. Ths

    rcommndations acknowldg

littl or no val in mothr

not tak th bnts o bd-

rinorcd by th rslts o larg

    poplation-basd stdis that

    calclat th liklihood o SIDS

    or accidntal inant daths, basd

    on th charactristics o babis

    who hav did compard with

    matchd controls. According to

ths typs o stdy ptting a

baby down to slp in th pron(tmmy-down) position, placing a

baby to slp in a sparat room,

    parntal smoking, and inant

had covring dring slp ar all

bhaviors that incrasd th r isk

Th crcial thing that parnts who

risks vary according to WHO is

    bd-sharing, WHeRe and HOW

thy ar doing it, and WHAT thy

    hav bn doing bor slping

    with thir baby.

    Bd-sharing babis o brastding

    prsmd hazards o slping in

    adlt bds (or xampl socation,

    ovrlaying, and ntrapmnt) d

to th prsnc and bhavior o

th cas or babis who ar not

    ormla-d inants wr gnrally

placd high in th bd, lvl with

btwn or on top o thir parntspillows. In contrast, brastd

    babis wr always positiond

fat on th mattrss, blow pillow

    hight. Mothrs who did not

    brastd spnt signicantly lss

tim acing thir baby than did

    brastding mothr-baby pairs,

thy did not adopt th protctiv

    slp position with th sam

    adoptd similar bd-sharing styls

    Th hormonal dback cycl

toward and bonding with inants in

a way that is absnt or diminishd

    bd-sharingthat brastding

    mothrs and babis slp togthr

    in signicantly dirnt ways than

    do non-brastding mothrs and

    babissggsts that tr cas-

tak ding typ into accont. It

is also important or brastdingmothrs to b awar that th

    consmption o alcohol or drgs

    (inclding crtain prscription and

    ovr-th-contr mdications)

    can svrly inhibit thir normal

    rsponss and bhavior whn

    slping with thir inants, and

    shold always b avoidd.

    The most important issues

    to remember when sleeping

    with your breasted baby

    are:

Never sleep with your baby on

    a soa or armchair/recliner.

    Never sleep with your baby

    ater drinking alcohol.

    Never sleep with your baby

    ater consuming (legal or illegal)

    drugs or any medication (such

    as nighttime cold remedies) that

    aect your awareness during

    sleep.

    Be aware that bed-sharing

with a parent who smokes (or

    a mother who smoked during

    pregnancy) increases the risk o

    SIDS.

    Think about your bed and

    bedding with inant saety in

    mind (avoid gaps, sot suraces,

    keep babies away rom pillows,

do not swaddle or over-wrap a

    bed-sharing baby).

    Make sure bed-partners are

aware the baby is in the bed,

and do not allow small children

to sleep next to a baby.

    Where to find helpfulinformation

    Parents need inormation

No, I dont ancy it ithr. So why shold babishav to? In th words o Johnny Gitar Watsons

Theyre making milk out of powder

    Theyve got the babies cryin

Poor babies, they dont know what that stuff is!

Th songs not rally abot brastding, or

mothrs. Its a gnral lamnt abot th way

socity is hading, and th radinss to giv

babis scond bst is jst on part o that.

Howvr, I liv in a contry whr its now

rgardd as normal and dsirabl or mothrs to

go back to work as soon as possiblas i raising

a child wr not important and valabl work.

Its mch mor diclt to sstain brastding

i yor wi/partnr is ot at work, bt it can b

Whn or rst son was born, I stayd at hom

with him and my wi workd ll tim. Sh

xprssd milk so that I woldnt hav to giv him

W now hav v childrn and

and by that I man xclsivly on

intrst in solids (sally by grabbing

ood o or plats). W lt thm

    wan thmslvssally a short

yo might think that is a long tim to

brastd a child, bt thats how it

sd to b don, and still is in th so

    calld Third World.

    Givn th obvios and wll-

its diclt to s why it isnt mor

    poplar hr. Howvr, th dcision

on whthr to brastd or not

isnt mad in isolationdads alsohav a say, and, in my xprinc, many appar

srprisingly rady to accpt ormla. Why is

that? Wll, I sspct that a lot o mn think that

thyll gt thir sx livs back mor qickly i th

baby is bottl-d and packd o to anothr

room as soon as possibl. It maks sns or

brastd babis to slp in th sam bd as

thir mothrthat way no on nds to gt p

in th middl o th night. Thats grat i yo

want a good nights slp, bt not i yo want

hot sx (and, bliv it or not, vn brastding

mms njoy som o that). Howvr, I rckon

th answr isnt to giv or babis a scond rat

milk sbstittits to or or partnrs th

hlp and spport thy nd (bt wont ask or,

bcas thy ar womn). Slking in ront o th

TV with a bottl o br isnt going to mak s

dads attractiv to tird and harassd partnrs.

Doing mor arond th hos and hlping ot

with childcar is. And doing a ll-tim job isnt

an xcs or bing a coch potato at hom. I

spnt thr yars as a ll-tim dad, and going

ot to work is ridiclosly asy in comparison.

Here are the benefits anddisadvantages as I see them:

Formlapoor sbstitt or brastmilk, dad ha

to tak trns at gtting p in th middl o th

night to prpar it, babys poo smlls bad.

Brastmilkidal ood or babis, no gtting ot

o bd rqird, babys poo is inonsiv, yor

    partnr has srprisingly larg brasts.

Srly this cant b a diclt choic or anyon

    who liks babis. Or brasts.

    Choosing Breastfeeding

    Ispent three years as a

    ull-time dad, and going

    out to work is ridiculously

Credited withPreventing WarRelated DeathsMak lov, not war was th chant shotd by

bt mayb th slogan shold hav bn Mak

mothrs milk, not war. Long bor any o s had

hard abot global warming, socitys biggstworry was th amont o damag bing casd

by wars. Th good nws is thos cris or pac

did not go nhdd. In a rmarkabl rport by

th School or Intrnational Stdis*, it appars

that th nmbr o daths dring tims o war

has bn rdcd signicantly in th last w

ort to ncorag womn to brastd was

sn to b on o th rasons or dclining

Th rst hal o th 20th cntry, marrd by twoll-scal world wars, th xplosion o two nclar

bombs, and a sris o cold wars scattrd

across th glob took a horrndos toll both

on thos contris immdiatly involvd and

on th mn and womn who participatd. Bt

dring wartim its not jst soldirs who sr.

Th collatral damag cratd by armd confict

srprisingly, it is th yongst who sr most.

Not long ago 50% o th daths dring wartim

Todays wars ar dirnt. Battl lins ar no

longr drawn btwn nations; sprpowrs no

th Hman Scrity Rport, By som stimats,

    brastding rats hav incrasd worldwid.

    In sb-Saharan Arica xclsiv brastding

o all!) provids protction against two major

killrs o inants dring wartim: diarrha and

ar not xclsivly brastd hav a svn-old

Bllts and minlds contin to b dadly.

Bt malntrition and diarrha, masls and

wr. On o th gratst lssons w hav

larnd in th last cntry is that it is still

asir to prvnt disas than it is to cr it. It

is ar asir (and lss costly) to avoid dath by

providing th basicsclan watr, halthy ood

and accss to minimm halth car, than it is to

contins to b on o th most advancd

ctiv way to protct or babis in tims o

pac and war, in tims o povrty and conomic

thror miss ot on i thy ar dprivd o this

    xprinc.

At on point h pts orward th intriging

hypothsis that, sinc th avrag lngth o

tim btwn brastds or a bd-sharing

mothr and baby is abot an hor and a hal,

or qivalnt to th lngth o th hman slp

cycl, th ntritional nds o coslping and

brastding inants might actally b what

dictatd th avrag lngth o th adlt slp

    cycl in th rst plac.

On th sbjct o SIDS, and th poplar

prcption o a link with coslping, h rondly

condmns th lazy scarmongring o th prss

and o what h rrs to as mdical parnting

scinc, and slly givs a brakdown o th

many indpndnt risk actors or SIDS that nd

to b considrd whn rading snsationalist

rports on daths casd by bdsharing.

Th prss, h points ot, maks no distinction

btwn th act o coslping and th conditions

in which it occrs. In act, as h rminds s,

ptting a baby to slp in a sparat room on itsown actally dobls th risk o SIDS. For babis

who do hav to slp or vn tak short naps

on thir own, h sggsts sing a baby monitor

in rvrs, to pip sonds and noiss rom th

activ part o th hos into th room whr

    th baby is slping.

In a practical how to sction, McKnna strsss

that thr is no corrct or on-siz-ts-

all mthod o coslping. Nor will any amily

ncssarily always stick to th sam arrangmnt,

sinc coslping is a practic that volvs ovr

tim, and thr ar ndlss variations on th

thm. This mssag is slightly ndrmind by

th act that on on pag thr is an illstration

ntitld Th Propr Way to Coslp, with vry

spcic instrctions abot th bdding to bsd and a sktch o a amily o thr aslp on

a mattrss in th vry cntr o an othrwis

airly bar room. Howvr, to his crdit, McKnna

dos xplain prcisly why this is th idal

arrangmnt, bt not th only on, and givs a

vry wlcom rndown o th risks associatd

with othr arrangmnts and ways o minimizing

thm. By th way, th nmbr on risk o bd-

sharing is not socation, bt ntrapmnt o

th baby, or xampl btwn th bd and a wall,

btwn th bd and anothr objct or pic o

rnitr or in a hadboard or ootboard.

On thing I ond a littl consing is that

    McKnna catgorically adviss against bd-

sharing (thogh, plas not, only against

bed-sharing, not othr orms o coslping, sch

as room-sharing) i thr ar othr childrn

who can or ar likly to climb into yor bd (a

sitation that is going to apply to vry manyo s, and crtainly applid to my own amily

ovr a priod o many yars), latr spciying in

mor dtail not to bd-shar i oldr siblings

who do not ndrstand th risks o socation

ar slping in th sam bd with inants lss

than on yar old. Howvr, whn discssing

twins, althogh h gnrally rcommnds not

bd-sharing, h dos not rl it ot altogthr,

providd that thr ar two rsponsibl adlts

prsnt, who ar both activ participants with

an intrst in monitoring th saty o on or

both twins. It is not clar to m why sch an

arrangmnt (two adlts, ach willing to tak

rsponsibility or on child) cold not also work

or two siblings o dirnt ags.

Howvr, ths minor qibbls apart, thisis a vry sl book i yo ar considring

coslping and want to sparat th myths rom

th acts, or i yo ar alrady happily coslping

bt wold lik to larn how to rspond to

crios, or vn downright critical, rinds, amily

    and halth prossionals.

On th whol, this book, lik LLL, concntrats

on giving inormation, not advic (thogh

McKnna dos both rcommnd and advis

on svral occasions!), and spaks to parnts as

popl who ar vry capabl o making thir own

    dcisions.

McKnnas ocial wbsit (at th Mothr-Baby
