So we have the mantra of self improvement, as well as contributing to the Sandringham Athletic Club in social and supportive ways. Whilst we work closely with local schools and various Little Athletics clubs; our track is also the home of Sandringham Little Athletics. The experience you will have when competing for the Sandringham Athletic Club will be different from Little Athletics and has a totally different feel. Under the Athletics Victoria umbrella we compete in BLUE ZONE for the summer and winter season. In both winter and summer seasons, there is the opportunity to compete in State Championship individual and relay events and National Championships. Your membership to the club will be effective from 1 April 2014 through to 31 March 2015 the following year and covers both the summer and winter season. SUMMER SEASON OCTOBER TO THE FOLLOWING MARCH Weekly Competition SHIELD COMPETITION Is the weekly competition conducted at venues of other clubs in the BLUE ZONE. This season we will be competing at Knox, Casey Fields, Aberfeldie (Essendon), Nunawading and Lakeside, where you compete against athletes from a number of other clubs. There are two programs with alternating events. You will often be competing against athletes of varying ages, including your age and of varying standards. For sprint events, you compete against athletes whose performances will be similar to yours, but there could be a big spread of ages in your race. Field events are scheduled to run in a number of time blocks linked to performance in the all jumps and throws. For distance events, including walks, the fields are dictated by the number of athletes, but you can be competing in a race that has “elite” athletes, athletes of your standard as well as athletes of lesser ability. There is incentive to improve and achieve personal bests. Hopefully the weekly competition provides you with challenges every week and every time you compete. Even though the sport is about you, the individual, each year Sandringham Athletic Club enters “teams” and your performance earns points for the Sandringham Team, YOUR team, and YOUR club. The composition of a Sandringham teams varies from season to season and is dependent on the overall numbers at a particular age profile. As a young 15 year old athlete you may find yourself competing in the Under 18 team in 2014-2015 season, but find yourself competing as an Under 16 in the following season. You just need to remember that your competing is all about YOU, attaining enjoyment, forging friendships and camaraderie and striving for that self improvement. The b product of all this is that you will earn points for YOUR team. If any of the Sandringham Teams finish in the top two, the teams will compete in the Shield Final. For the past two seasons our senior women’s team has competed in the Shield Final. The Shield Final is a competition where the top two teams from BLUE ZONE in their respective age groups competes against the top two teams from all other zones i.e. Red, White, Yellow (all metro), Ballarat, Bendigo, Gippsland, Geelong and North East. You do not have to compete in all events available to your age group or team each week. You can specialise and focus on your preferred event(s) or do as many events as you wish. In the alternating programs there is an opportunity to compete in a relay event. So ask your team members what they are doing and see if you can run a relay in addition to your preferred events. Club Captains may approach you as well for the various relay team opportunities. We ask that you that you advise the Club’s team managers (Nancy Emblin or Kathy Tanojevic) when you arrive of the events you intend to compete. This makes it easier to check your results and also let you know of any changes to program etc.

VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS State Championships are conducted by Athletics Victoria in Track, Field, Multi-Event and Relay events and you enter these in the age group you are in by virtue of your date of birth. You need to note when these events are and watch for closing dates to ensure you get your entry in on time. In relation to entering into the State Relay Championships, Sandringham Athletic Club will ask for your support to represent the club. You may find yourself running out of age to ensure we enter as many teams as we can for the number of athletes who want to compete. There are qualifying standards that athletes must reach in order to enter the National Championships.

Over the course of the season we develop a roster to share this responsibility around to you or a parent(s) in the case of junior athletes. Every little effort helps and counts. So when it is you and your families turn, step up and make it positive experience.

WINTER SEASON APRIL TO OCTOBER Is the competition conducted at a range of venues offering races of various distances over road and cross country courses. . If you see the acronym XCR on anything is means Cross Country and Road Racing. These events can be entered individually or you can purchase a season entry at a reduced rate. All races are effectively State Championships. There are various distances over the season for each of the age groups and senior divisions. There is incentive to improve and achieve personal bests. Hopefully the competition provides you with challenges every week and every time you compete. Teams and relay events also apply to the Cross Country and Road Racing season. From time to time we ask some of the traditional “summer” athletes to brave the wintery conditions to make up relay teams. Similarly with the summer season and you could be asked to be in an “older” team. Again this will depend on the number of athletes, standards and age profiles of other athletes at the club. You just need to remember that the competing is all about you getting enjoyment and striving for improvement. Except for relays, you can always choose to compete in your correct age group as older athletes may be competing in longer races. Cross Country and Road racing is a little longer than the summer season and continuity is a little more important. For winter athletes, try to compete in as many events as your schedule permits.

VICTORIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS State Championships are conducted by Athletics Victoria. There are qualifying standards that athletes can obtain that could see them enter into National Championships. DUTY The Sandringham Athletic Club will be required to provide helpers over the course of the winter season. Again we try and share this around so that no person will be singled out for excessive duty. UNIFORM Sandringham Athletic Club singlet or crop top, available for purchase from the club, must be worn for competition. Athletics Victoria provides you with a set of registration umbers to be placed on the front and back or your top. Any form of black shorts, briefs, tights can be worn with our club uniform. TRANSPORT TO VENUES If you have difficulty getting to a venue or competition or returning home please contact anyone from the committee and they will ensure suitable arrangements can be made for you.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Sandringham Athletic Club Inc is an incorporated body and is affiliated with Athletics Victoria. Each year in May we conduct the obligatory Annual General Meeting (AGM). This AGM elects office bearers for the forthcoming year, reports on our financial position and responsibilities and formally recognises contributions made by individuals to Sandringham and Athletics. Additionally we use this forum to reward and reflect on performances of the athletes over the course of the season. THE TRACK The track, its environs and the pavilion are leased from the City of Bayside by Sandringham Athletic Club Inc. Under special arrangements approved by the City of Bayside, Sandringham Athletic Club Inc, is responsible for the financial arrangements necessary to maintain the track and facility. Whilst it may be considered modest the rental we pay for the two leases, the maintenance of the track is a significant financial commitment taken on by the Sandringham Athletic Club Inc. In 2011 Sandringham Athletic Club Inc paid just over $192,000 for the refurbishment/upgrade of the track. In the next couple of years we will need to ensure there are sufficient funds available to keep the track in maintained to the highest standard possible. The City of Bayside does not contribute any direct money for track maintenance. We work closely with them to ensure the environs and pavilion meet our and community expectations. COACHES
