o Sparking Nursing Innovation Using the Human-Centered Approach of Design Thinking Salon II&III
Employing new ways of thinking, such as with design thinking, opens up enormous possibilities
to improve health and redesign the processes of healthcare. Nurses are at the forefront
of innovation, as academics, as practitioners, and as leaders in the health and healthcare, we are
primed to create new solutions to old problems. Review the process of creative problem solving
within design thinking, how it is being used to educate the next generation of nurse innovators,
and how the leadership in nursing can advance emerging innovations in healthcare.
Speaker: Marion Leary, MSN, MPH, RN, Director of Innovation, School of Nursing, University
of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA
o Transformation of the Addiction Treatment and Recovery System in the U.S. Salon IV For every major disease, there is an organization devoted to funding the discovery of protocols
and programs for prevention treatment and recovery---except for Addiction. Furthermore, there
are few standards that have to be met to operate an addiction and treatment recovery system in the
United States. They vary in cost, from free to thousands of dollars a month, which are options
only for the super-wealthy. Cost does not seem to dictate outcomes or recidivism; quality
indicators and evidence-based treatment are on the horizon. Kevin Roy outlines the steps needed
to decrease the stigma, improve healthcare systems, and build communities for support and
advocacy.
Speaker: Kevin Roy, Chief Public Policy Officer, Shatterproof, New York, NY

together to further this aim to ensure comprehensive, evidence-based quality care for older adults. An
organizing framework for an age-friendly public health system is presented from five inaugural health
systems, along with lessons learned from a variety of challenges related to the care of the older adult.
Finally, strategies on how to engage the workforce, families and communities in this initiative are
