Lee-Ann Skomski registered for the 2017 Nevada Senior Games swimming competition not knowing what to expect. It was her first time participating. Feeling as though the distance races might take too much out of her, Lee-Ann entered 4 sprint races. She was trying to set a goal that she could achieve. She was try-ing to get into better shape. She was thinking that she just might be able to fly again.

Back in the 1980’s Lee-Ann swam the 200 meter long course (50 meters per

length) freestyle in the summer Olympic sport that she excelled in, Modern Pen-tathlon. She competed in 7 World Cham-pionships, being one of the leaders for female pentathletes in the Olympics today. Modern Pentathlon has been modified over the years, for better media presenta-tion, but it still consists of epee fencing, freestyle swimming, equestrian jumping (draw an unknown horse), pistol shooting (lazer now) and cross country running (3K for men and women now). Lee-Ann exclaims, “Back then, when I was in good swimming condition, I felt like I was flying on water.”

Lee-Ann showed up to the NSG compe-tition in early October feeling excited. As soon as she entered the pool she thought of her deceased mother who had been a primary role model in her life. It was her mother who taught her the joy of being in water. She says, “My mom was a top notch swimmer in her day, which was amaz-ing because her single mother became an alcoholic. She was ranked number one in backstroke when she earned a full ride athletic scholarship to Michigan State University, and she placed 3rd in the 1948 Olympic trials.” Memory of her mother encouraged her to lighten up and have fun that day.

The pool environment felt like home to Lee-Ann, even though she had not swum there before. She noticed that there were about forty swimmers in and out of the water. She warmed up, she visualized her races and she stepped up to the starting block. It was later, after Lee-Ann had won her first two races, when a small group of her competitors asked her how old she was. She told them that she was 57 and several of them laughed. They teased her and told her that she was a baby. “I accept,” said Lee-Ann, laughing along with them. Then she told them her story.

“I have a terminal brain tumor,” she led in. “About five years ago, I was diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma multiforme mass.” She didn’t tell them about the radiation treatment and how she lost her hair. Nor did she tell them about the 40

lbs. she put on twice after two intense steroid medication sessions. “I rarely have headaches now. My tumor has shrunk some and I guess that I am just too stub-born to die,” she declared with a smile. The ladies offered her a compassionate smile back, not knowing really quite what to say. When Lee-Ann finished her last race, friendly new fans were cheering her on.

Lee-Ann heard their voices as she closed in for her fourth win of the day - she felt like she was flying.

Join Lee-Ann in this year’s Nevada Se-nior Games swimming competition, to be held Oct. 6-7. Or choose one or more of 23 other events in which to compete. See the NSG web site nevadaseniorgames.com for more information.

Nominations for the Nevada Senior Citizen of the Year 2018 will be

accepted from February 1 thru March 31, 2018. The Nevada Delegation of the National Silver Haired Congress (NSHC) in partnership with the Aging Services Di-rectors Organization (ASDO) established this award in 2013.

The first annual award was presented to Mr. Frank Pati of Mesquite on May 22, 2013. Ms. Ray Fiol of Las Vegas received the Award for 2014, Favil West of Hender-son received the award for 2015, Ms. Rana Goodman of Henderson received the award for 2016, and Ms. Beverly Saperstein is the current Nevada Senior Citizen of the Year (2017).

Guidelines for selecting the Nevada Senior Citizen of the Year include the following. The nominee must be a cur-rent resident of Nevada and must have resided in our state for at least five years. The nominee must have been at least 60 years of age as of December 31, 2017. Recipients will be selected for significant contributions made at the local, state, and/or national level and by excellence achieved through going above and beyond the call of duty, specifically with respect to volunteer work in support of the Senior Citizens of Nevada.

In addition to the nomination form, the nominator should provide a written

summary of the significant accomplish-ments including dates and appropriate documents and testimonials to support the nomination. A headshot photo of the nominee is required. (A digital photo should be sent to the email address below.)

Nominations will be evaluated on the scope and impact of a nominee’s achieve-ments and the extent to which the nomi-nee’s efforts benefit(ed) and provide(d) inspiration to their community and other Senior Citizens. The achievements are not limited to only one year and may in-clude years of service before the nominee reached 60 years of age.

The recipient will be chosen by a com-mittee from the Nevada Delegation of the NSHC and the ASDO.

Nominations for the year 2018 must be submitted not later than March 31, 2018 to the Nevada Delegation of the NSHC, 2116 Inverness Drive, Henderson, NV 89074. A postmark of March 31 or earlier is acceptable.

The nomination guidelines and forms may be obtained by emailing [email protected], calling (702) 860-6349, or at www.nevshc.org. Also, questions may be addressed at the same email address or phone number.

Meow Wolf, an Arts Collective, Joins as Anchor Tenant

Las Vegas families and tourists alike will witness a new entertain-

ment and retail complex come to life in Spring 2019. AREA15 is a unique concept of a wholly re-imagined world weaving together immersive experiences, themed events, art installations, restaurants, bars, and nightlife. The complex will appeal to a variety of clientele, including gamers, comic-con and sci-fi enthusiasts, artists, music and festival lovers, and anyone sim-ply looking for an immersive and unique experience. AREA15 is a development project led by a joint venture between real estate development firm Fisher Brothers and creative agency Beneville Studios, both of New York.

AREA15 announced it has signed Meow Wolf, a multi-media production company based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as the anchor tenant. Meow Wolf creates immer-sive, interactive experiences that transport audiences of all ages into fantastic realms of story and exploration. Well over 100 Meow Wolf artists work together to tell immersive stories through fabrication, painting, sculpture, architecture, virtual and augmented reality, sound, performa-tive experiences and interactivity. Meow Wolf ’s first permanent exhibition, House of Eternal Return, is located in Santa Fe and has welcomed nearly a million visitors in its first two years. Meow Wolf will work with local artists and talent in Las Vegas and the surrounding areas to create expe-riences in AREA15.

“AREA15 is a radical reimagining of retail,” said Winston Fisher, a principal of Fisher Brothers. “It will be a 21st century immersive bazaar and an entirely new concept in retail and entertainment. We are building something meant for anyone who appreciates experiences. It appeals to men, women, and the young and old. If you like cool stuff, art, the movies, and en-joy a good restaurant, you should have fun at AREA15. We are building something for everyone — a genuine experience that we

believe everyone can appreciate.”AREA15 offers up to 126,000 square

feet of customized tenant space for a curated collection of experiential and retail businesses; 68,000 square feet of leasable ground floor space and up to 58,000 square feet of mezzanine space. A 40,000 square-foot indoor and outdoor event space, ideally suited for live music, festivals, corporate events, e-sport tourna-ments and much more will be adjacent to the retail and dining options. The indoor and outdoor event space has the capac-ity to accommodate up to 3,000 guests at a time, with plans to host more than 100 events per year. AREA15 will offer over 800 complimentary parking spaces.

Complementing the retail and event space is the interconnected "Spine,” a destination unto itself as an immersive bizarre and promenade that ties all of the tenants together. Says Michael Beneville, “We respect that the visitor to AREA15 is an adventurer and explorer, someone who wants to be authentically engaged and inspired. We have scoured the world for visionary artists and talent to bring this alternative reality to life.” Designed to showcase inventive dining and nightlife options, unique activations, innovative art exhibitions, and bespoke performances, the 30,000 square foot Spine will be a canvas for artists to showcase their work. BARTKRESA Studio’s twelve-foot tall faceted skull, Shogyo Mujo, a collabora-tion with sculptor Joshua Harker, utilizing projections, 3D mapping, lighting, music, and interactivity, will come to life in the center of the Spine. Henry Chang, a Las Vegas based sculptor known for his use of unique materials and contemporary fabrication methods, will find a permanent home for “Flux Capacitor”, an art car built originally for the Burning Man festival. The Spine will feature an ecological forest of an original bamboo structure from Bali, designed by IBUKU and built by the tradi-tional skills of Balinese craftsmen.

The new venue will feature an open-air patio, brass fixtures, smoked-oak wood floors, modern art pieces, a neon light fixture and floor-to-ceiling glass windows providing views of the iconic Fountains of Bellagio. The globally-influenced seasonal fare will include Puck’s signature touches, such as gourmet

pizzas topped with salmon and caviar, a multi-course California tasting menu, special bar menu of Wolfgang Puck favorites, an artisanal cocktail program and extensive international wine list. Spago, Caesars Palace, Forum Shops at Caesars, 3500 Las Vegas Blvd. S., Las Vegas, NV 89109, 702-369-6300.

By Senator Dean HellerNearly two years ago in August 2016,

the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) released its first-ever count of suicides among our nation’s veteran population, revealing that an average of 20 veterans die by suicide each day.

To get this data, the VA examined more than 55 million veterans’ records from 1979-2014 from every state in the coun-try. Among some of its findings: veterans accounted for 18 percent of all suicides in the U.S. despite making up only 8.5 percent of the population.

As a senior member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, I’ve fought to ensure that Nevada’s military veterans receive the care, benefits, and support that they’ve earned and deserve. And the area of mental health treatment is a top prior-ity of mine as Nevada unfortunately has the third-highest veteran suicide rate in the country.

While Congress has made great strides in this area – such as passing into law the Clay Hunt SAV Act during the 114th Congress – there’s still more work to be done, and be assured that I’m fighting for increased access to mental health care and suicide prevention services for Nevada’s 300,000 military veterans.

That’s why I’m pleased to report that in the first weeks of 2018, President Don-ald Trump signed an executive order to

assist veterans in Nevada and across the country in accessing mental health care and resources.

It’s important to note that veteran sui-cide and mental health treatment is not an issue that is exclusive to the most recent generation of veterans, former service members of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. In fact, in the VA’s comprehensive analysis I mentioned earlier, researchers found that approximately 65 percent of all veterans who died from suicide in 2014 were 50 years of age or older.

Specifically, the executive order directs the secretaries of the Departments of De-fense (DOD), Homeland Security (DHS), and VA to develop a plan within 60 days that provides streamlined access to mental health treatment and suicide prevention resources for veterans and to update the President on the implementation of the plan and outline further reforms within 180 days.

This executive order is critical to reduc-ing the number of veteran suicides in Nevada and across the country. It will help this administration create a roadmap to ensure that those who have bravely worn the uniform can access the care they need for their invisible wounds.

We are grateful and forever indebted to our veterans and that’s why we must never forget what they have done to protect this country and our freedoms.

As a strong supporter of our nation’s military and troops, I will continue to work to ensure that the department is properly equipped to support Nevada’s veterans who are suffering from invisible injuries and to bring down the number of veteran suicides in Nevada and across the country.

I’m encouraged by the focus on this is-sue within the White House and by the ef-forts of VA Secretary David Shulkin. I was honored to meet with Secretary Shulkin in Reno, NV, this summer where we dis-cussed increasing access to mental health treatment for veterans, especially those in rural areas. During that meeting, I signed a pledge reaffirming my commitment to preventing veteran suicide.

To any Nevada veteran who is struggling today, know this – you are not alone and there is help available. Veterans and their loved ones can call the Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 and Press 1, chat online, or send a text message to 838255 to receive confidential support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Additionally, the Veterans Crisis Line website is available at https://www.veteranscrisisline.net/.

As always, it’s an honor to represent you in the U.S. Senate. I have offices in Reno, Las Vegas, and Washington, D.C., and I encourage you to contact us – we are here to help you.
