NEUTRALITY ACTS OF THE 1930’S

• The laws defining rules for:

• exports,

• financial transactions

• interactions under the banner of wartime neutrality.

• The Neutrality Acts required American vessels to have a license to carry arms

LEND & LEASE ACT• Drafted in 1940 but passed in 1941

• Formally titled “An Act to Further Promote the Defense of the US”

• Allowed the country to supply allies with everything they need but soldiers

• The US couldn’t take money from countries they supplied

• Indirectly got us into the wor eventually

COUNTRIES THAT USED THE LEND OR LEASE ACT TO THEIR ADVANTAGE

• Britain: 31.4 Billion

• France:3.2 Billion

• Republic of China: 1.6 Billion

• USSR:11.3 Billion

• Other allies:2.6 Billiona QAA q

DESTROYER OF BASES AGREEMENT

• In 1940 bought 50 arms from the United States but couldn’t have a cash transaction for it

• So in exchange for 50 naval destroyers in exchange for naval base usage

Base Locations• the Avalon Peninsula• the coast of New found

land • the Great Bay of

Bermuda.• Others along the

Caribbean sea

IMPORTANCE OF THIS DEAL• Britain wasn’t prepared for the war

they had a lack of surface ships

• Germany had submarines and an abundance of surface ships

• Germany attacked Britain basically destroying their sea transportation

• So the British just ask for old destroyers to handle the emergency situation and the US was happy to see Britain being able to defend themselves afterward.
